After the update with all the screens fixed I am wondering how many people are satisfied with their touch. If you are not post what you are not satisfied with specifically.

I personally voted "Yes, I love my iPod Touch"

I like my iPod touch but wish Apple would have added one thing: a memory expansion slot. I understand the decision to use flash memory and that the 16GB capacity was about all they were going to get out of it while still making the unit affordable. However, if Apple would have added a memory expansion slot, I could then add another 16GB of memory thus making for 32GB in total flash memory. 16GB really isn't a whole lot when you count video content so it would have been nice to add some memory down the line. Other than that, I really wouldn't change anything other than adding Flash support in Safari and the ability of the device to output at progressive resolutions to TVs.

The only thing I wish it had was a speaker and a camera. Especially the speaker. But, I still love it. By far the best gadget I ever owned. I love it more for the internet than the music or videos. I'll probably never watch a movie on it, but I did watch a TV show on it last night.
Anyways, love it.

It is really perfect. I am so happy to have Freud's iPod. I am completely satisfied with it except for the fact that the back gets scratched up a bit easily, but thats a problem for all the iPods, so it really isn't that big of a deal.

I voted 'I don't have an iPod touch.' Why? Because I do not have an iPod touch. Haha I like how you put that as one of the choices :D

I think it's fantastic. Only thing I really miss is an external volume switch - I'd like to be able to raise/lower the volume without have to wake it up... Oh well -- I think the mobile internet is fantastic. It feels like that inbetween device I've always wanted - don't need a notebook, but would like to be able to glance at emails or see if I've any IM when away from my computer.

In my opinion, it's a really great gadget but until some of the core Ipod functionality is fixed I am frustrated and not satisfied.

Currently smart playlists are terrible, I will randomly lose a whole period of last played updates when syncing, and album art functionality is a mess with mis matches.

Yes, definitely. Other than the gimped Calendar and the current lack of third-party applications (official or otherwise), it's simply amazing. The screen is huge and beautiful, the Internet works really well, and the touch interface is responsive and intuitive.

Apple could definitely develop both the iPhone and the iPod touch into the dominant handheld consumer computer platform, because both devices are so much more than PMPs now and benefit from the momentum of the iPod line. It'll be interesting to see where they take things from here.

It's beautiful, it's amazing, it's an incredible piece of technology. I love it.

Except for its inability to shuffle album play. That little minor (and utterly ridiculous in this day and age) omission makes it a pain in the ### to listen to music, it's primary function. I'd gladly give up calendar, contacts, youtube, and even safari for a simple album shuffle function.
As it is, as much as I'm infatuated with it, I had to vote No, I'm not satisfied with it.

Actually you can just go to Albums then tap all songs and right before the list there will be magical button labeled "Shuffle". Unless you meant shuffling the album art, that would be a nice feature.

Got it today, adn looked at "Metropolis" (the japanese anime), listened to "Across the universe" soundtrack, and walked around during this sunny day to access Internet from opened WiFi network.

Absolutely fantastic! iPhone users must be walking around like they are hovering over clouds.

Oh, wait: the monthly bills must drag them down to us...

So I just got back from a business trip and I was able to login to my work email remotely and login to a web-based service we use, all through the hotel's wifi, and get some work done. It wasn't EASY but it worked and to me that was incredibly useful as I didn't have to lug my laptop with me. Plus I used it to watch a movie while waiting for my flight at the airport, and listened to a few tunes as well.
I am very happy with it, even though I would be more happy were I able to add additional apps and functionality to it.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, that only shuffles tracks for me. I want it to pick an album at random, play through it normally, then pick another album at random. If you can give me a good method to do that I'll change my vote (in spirit) to Yes I love my touch.

Could you elaborate a bit more on what is not working well with the smart playlists and last played date?

Yes I do love my iPod touch. Biggest downside..... explaining 10 times a day that NO it is NOT the iPhone.

Ditto.

I have played with the touch for a couple of days now and have a couple of observations.

1. The Home screen needs more buttons to play with, I presume these will come in time from the Apple mother ship.

2. The responsiveness of the screen is sometimes a little unpredictable.

3. Safari still needs a little work to handle the rendering a little better.

However, overall I could not be more happy with the touch and will certainly now be going for the iPhone on its UK release.

I don't care about third party apps as I think that the majority of things will be handled by web apps.

The killer app for me is the itunes store, I am happy to pay for (most) of my music and this makes it even easier. Browsing is a good experience and youtube is a nce way to waste a little free time.

Construction is outstanding, the clean lines follow perfect joins and the screen quality is breathtaking. The chrome back is as classic as any iPod and although prone to scratching, a good case / sleeve will protect it nicely.

Overall, I consider it to be money well spent, combined with my iMac and eyeTV I can get the full entertainment value from this brilliant gadget.

So far I love my touch. It is not as easy to use while out walking as my old iPod was but the coolness factor makes up for it. External volume controls would have been handy. Or at least a better way to change the volume than having to click a button then slide the unlock slider, then change the volume. But even then I still love it.

When the iPod is in sleep mode, you can just press the Home button twice to bring up the volume slider without unlocking the iPod. Not as good as physical buttons, but it does the job.

Saw that mentioned before but I have yet to be able to get my Touch to do that. Quick double click or slow double click it does not bring up the volume slider.

Sometimes I find that when my touch is sleeping the double-click of the home button doesn't always bring up the controls. I have to double-click again (or press once to wake up, then double-click). Other times the double-click will work without first needing to wake it up. I figure it's a bug, but a simple enough workaround is to always triple-click. That always works. The double-click always works if my touch isn't asleep and I'm in Safari or whatever. Hope that helps.

Oh, and yes I love my iPod touch. I find that I like the WiFi and browser more than I expected. I really wish it supported Flash, though, and I think it's ridiculous that Apple's own .Mac webmail doesn't work on the thing. That really has to be fixed, especially for us Touch users. Speaking of which, of course I hope they have a change of heart about the Mail, Notes and Calendar editing. We need those. I also really want to see 3rd party apps/freeware/open-source, though. However, it's possible that the rumored ability to save web pages/web apps for use offline might do the trick. I'm skeptical about the performance of those, though. Bejewled, for example, is very slow and that even without having any sound. We shall see. In any case, I still love the thing.

I ended up being dissatisfied enough that I returned mine and got a Nano which I absolutely love. Here's my list of my personal gripes (disclaimer: this is a list of MY PERSONAL gripes so don't expect it to match yours):

Screen Size - I was very excited to get a bigger screen but one major revelation I had is that 2", 2.5" or 3.5" all pale in comparison to my 37" HDTV. That's obvious of course, but my point is that if I'm going to watch the latest Heroes or a new movie then I want to watch on a big screen. So while the touch is a great portable video player, i ended up watching videos I was already familiar with (old movies/rerun tv shows) because catching the details wasn't important. And for me, that meant the Nano could do the job almost as good as the touch.

WiFi - It's definitely a feature I love, but I found myself using it 99% of the time when there was a perfectly good computer within 20ft. Using internet over a cell network is practical because you can do it anywhere but over Wi-Fi you are pretty limited.

Volume Buttons - Easily the biggest reason I gave up. Everyone complained how it should be compared to other iPods rather than the iPhone. Okay, well compared to other iPods then it is the most difficult iPod to use in the real world. Jogging, driving, walking etc all require looking at the screen and it's a huge mistake to eliminate physical volume buttons in favor of.... well, in favor of nothing since it was pointless to do it.

Scroll Wheel - We've all seen the pictures of the "virtual scroll wheel" and it just didn't make sense back then. But now it actually is a great idea because a gesture based activation for certain commands would really make this easier to use. So why not emulate the wheel? It sure beats trying to move those tiny scrubbers to skip around video.

No internal Speaker - "Well, no other iPod has one so whats the big deal". Yeah, well no other iPod has YouTube or such a fantastic interface for watching small videos to share with friends.

8GB/16GB - Obviously a technological limitation but still. $400 for 16GB of content? For something the size of the Touch then I just think it should hold much more than 8-16GB.

So that's most of it. I'm not slamming the Touch. I just don't think this particular version is very good. But I have high hopes for the next version and if they address some of these issues I'll definitely buy it. But for now the Nano is good enough. I can use it in the real world and it doesn't trip me up.

After having my touch for about two weeks, its going back to Bestbuy. Dont get me wrong this device is pretty amazing. 16gb is not going to cut it for me. I am one of the few that is having an issue with the battery. Battery is draining when my touch is completely shut off...even after the new update. Battery life is not that great either. At 400 bucks I really dont think its worth it. No java support, or flash. Wifi is okay i guess, I get full bars at home and for some reason, it still takes up to 7 second to load up a page. Once a bigger drive shows up with java support and flash support I then will pick it up.

I'm extremely happy with the iPod Touch.

My only problems so far are;

Slower sync speed in comparison to 3G Nano
Keyboard is sometimes tricky to use.
Youtube App search results aren't as thorough as searching on PC.

Has anyone else had any problems with the Youtube searching?
For example, on your PC, search "Hey Abbot". It should have the clip from Robin Hood Men in Tights.
When I search it on Youtube App for Touch, the clip is non-existent. Even if I search all the key words related to the Clip.

I can't believe what a quality gadget this is. I'm always surprised that there are complaints at all. Yes, 16GB is a little small (I had a 30GB video previous) but as long as you swap out the video as you watch it, there's plenty of room. I also don't keep all my music on the touch, just the stuff I actually listen to. It's actually a good idea, now that I think about it; I got rid of all the stuff I always skip anyway. To me, the storage space is small potatoes compared to the design. The touch interface is so intuitive and convenient. The video (which I use A LOT) is incredible and the fact that they threw in wi-fi has been highly entertaining. Speaking as someone who does NOT want their ipod to also be their phone (personally, there are just places that I need my phone which is smaller, by the way, but wouldn't want to bring along the ipod. there are times when I'll risk being in the rain with my phone, but never the ipod) I love having the great features that came out with the iphone.

OK, folks, before you continue raging about why Apple don't flippin' use larger memory, have a look at the available technology today: The iPod Touch is using so called Solid State Disk (instead of a normal harddisk). Currently max available size at the markets: 32 GB, yes, but go and check out streetprices.com for SSD and 32GB size, and then you do the math why Apple currently does not have 32GB in the $399 iPod touch (SSD 32GB normal retail prices start around $350...). Now stop whining about "limited" size of the iPod touch and get back to reality. If you want to complain, write a letter/email to Samsung and tell them to develop 640GB SSD until the end of this year, at a retail price of 25$ and Apple sure will build the enhanced SSD into the iPod touch.

10-06-2007, 07:18 PM
First of all welcome to the forums Newton user. Second of all we respect what people say here, nobody was whining, we are just simply stating that we would like larger storage.

Last, you are right, 32GB SSD's are really expensive right now, until the prices get lower we will not see a 32GB iPod touch.

DerekVOF
10-06-2007, 08:02 PM
It is a little disappointing that larger sizes arent available, but I think the Touch is just the right size. If it had an internal hard drive rather than flash, it would make it too bulky and not nearly as useful for surfing the web one handed - or typing on the forums here just using my thumbs. :-)

Okay, here's the thing:

I have an 80gb iPod. I also have a phone and a wifi Palm. I don't want the iPhone till they work out the battery/texting issues, and AT&T works out their billing problems. When the iPod Touch was announced, I figured that I could at least combine a minimal daily-use iPod with a Palm replacement (Palm Desktop for Mac hasn't been updated since 2004). So...

I called Apple. I asked point-blank: does the iPod Touch allow you to enter calendar and contact info DIRECTLY onto it? The answer: YES. absolutely. You enter the calendar and address book info on the on-screen keyboard.

So I bought it, and it DOES NOT allow calendar editing at all. Only the address book. Which makes no sense. There also is no notepad so I can enter calendar info temporarily till I get back to my Mac.

It is not a question of 'duh, it's an ipod, and it acts like an ipod, what did you expect?' It's the fact that I asked Apple if it performs these two functions before the $400 purchase, and they said it did, and now I have to face the issue of arguing why I shouldn't have to pay a restocking fee to the store to return it.

False advertising, pure and simple. And being an Apple user since 1988, it pains me to say so.

Newton User

First of all welcome to the forums Newton user. Second of all we respect what people say here, nobody was whining, we are just simply stating that we would like larger storage.

Maybe whining was the wrong wording, but it certainly drives me crazy to have one of the most advanced technologies in my hands, and people still complain left, right and center. I do not know any other manufacturer that combines so many cutting edge technologies into a single device (I personally do not know of any other that has the thinness of a device combined with SSD, excellent display, and truly innovative touch-usage concept) and releases it to the mass market. People ordered this device without ever seen it, got anymore information than available on some forums, and they're now gathering here and elsewhere complaining why they can't edit this, and do word documents, or using it as ftp server (I'm exaggerating here, but I think you get my point). Users posting here that Applie lies, or is not delivering what the user thought the device can do, they should go back and think about it for a minute and next time buy a device when it's on the market for a while, or when other true users have published their experiences.

And last but not least, it's an iPod with a touchscreen, and WiFi. It was never meant to replace a Blackberry or any other PDA device.

a113524c
10-07-2007, 09:39 AM
I agree it is an awsome device. People just want everything when they pay $400 for a gadget. I love my touch and don't really care about the missing things.

But, I also understand why people would be annoyed when things are missing because we have been waiting 2 years for the touch and we would hope apple would go all out. If apple released the touch first and then the iPhone it would be a whole different story. The touch would'nt be looked at as a phonless iPhone with tons of features missing, it would be looked at as a revolutionary device because it came first.

Apple released the device with the most features first. That made us think of the touch as a step down from the iPhone. Sorry if I got off topic :D

Essentially I think people fall into a few camps here.

1. People who bought to have the latest gadget, then suffered from buyers remorse and came up with all sorts of lame reasons to return it under the guise of being ripped off.

2. People who bought it without reading the advertising. All features were listed along with the price, strangely they seem to think there should be something more and decided that they were being ripped off and returned their iPod for a refund.

3. People who realise that they are buying a platform that will, in time, bring more applications and are happy to see what additional content will be given and will contribute to the development of the platform.

All in all, I am person 3. I think that whilst I believe I have good value for what I have purchased, I know there will be more to come, so am happy to support the platform rather than people who simply decide after they part with the cash that to justify getting their money back they have to trash this outstanding product.

Just my two cents

Ok, lets get real folks. current 32GB flash base drives cost around 400 bucks alone right now. I cant see anyone here paying 800 to 900 bucks for a media player. the cost of flash storage should go down by half by the end of next year. this will make it easy for apple to sell. at the same cost as the current line.

at 16GB and the unit costing 399. I would say around a 3rd of the cost is just for flash. there is a lot of new tech that goes in the iPod touch so this first gen is costing a lot. I fully expect to see 32GB and even 64GB versions next year about this time.

Exactly, I don't know about the 64GB in one year though. My prediction is that they will release a 32GB this time next year and then a 64GB this time 2 years from now. But you never know, no one expected the classic to have 160GB.

Ditto. You know, like the gen 3 that just replaced had, and probably (guessing) all the other iPods have.

Can anyone confirm or deny that the schmucks at Apple didn't include shuffle by album for the iPod Touch?

Other than that, I like it for the 2 hours I've owned it. However, that is basically the only way I have listened to my iPod for the past few years. I'd like to have the choice to change, and NOT be forced to change.

Thanks,

5 days having a Touch and I love it. I figured I would like it but did not realize how much. This is a much larger update to the iPod line then I expected and I can not see how someone can be dissatisfied (if you get a good one). Sound quality is much better than the 30gb 5g with richer basses and less hiss. The screen is beautiful, making pictures actually worth putting on your iPod, I only did with my 5g to view on a tv with the rca cable, and videos look great on it. COME ON, IT'S AN iPOD WITH FREAKING WIFI, and a wonderfully executed browser. The touch interface is revolutionary and a blast. I love navigating the menus and cannot keep my hands off of this thing. More capacity would be nice but not nice enough to have to wait another year for it. I am very satisfied and think it is worth every dollar. It is by far the best iPod to date!
-Note to Apple, stop making cool, must-have, new products every two years. I am tired of ponying up the cheese.

i had an iphone on order but i canceled it just now. i will be looking for the next ipod touch update, which will likely bring bluetooth. i was hoping for bluetooth in the 1st gen, so that i can DUN with my cell phone. i think it's gonna happen soon. plus, compared to the iphone, it lacked some features. i'll also wait for little problems to be fixed, such as screen issues.

The iPod touch is great, and even better when you combine it with iPhone apps.

Although bluetooth, flash, speaker, camera are all things I wanted, the jailbreak somewhat bridges the gap. That, and the creation of more apps everyday for the touch.

Wouldn't that be an issue with the campus wifi provider?

Next yeah they should be coming out with some sort of redesign perhaps, make it even thinner? XD

Now that its jailbreakable for 3rd part applications, it is worth the whole $400 it cost.

Don't own one, but had experience with one and wasn't that impressed quite frankly..yes its neat looking but it lacks capacity, lacks any buttons to push while in your pocket. Its not the most optimal player for me for playing audio.

I would suggest that the campus should offer WPA , WEP is intrinsically insecure and enterprise encryption was just a half cocked attempt to fix it.

Am I satisfied with my Touch?

The answer is a resounding yes.

When I first bought my touch, I got it for one reason: wi-fi. I'd had my previous iPod (3G, 15Gig) stolen last March after 4 years of use when my car was broken into during a show last year, and decided against replacing it right away in hopes something new might appear, and I'm glad I waited.

The wi-fi capabilities helped immensely when we didn't have an internet connection at home and I was relying on my campus wireless connection to email/get the days news/catch up on forums, yet didn't feel like lugging my laptop to campus on my bike along with all the other books I needed for class.

Then I first heard the words "jailbreak" - and my entire mindset on the Touch changed. I went from thinking "I've got a new MP3 player/WiFi net Browser" to thinking "alright, how can I use this thing in every day life?" The jailbreak process was simple (and I'm on PPC - we don't have a GUI jailbreak program yet), and getting the apps working couldn't have been easier. I've moved my entire planner into my touch, already used it for directions once, have both my email accounts synched to it, and have plenty of room for all the music I'd need at a given time.

The only complaint I have is the utter lack of functional case at this point. Beyond that, this is one of the best purchases I've made in years and would highly recommend it to others.

For the most part, yes I'm satisfied with my new little toy. I'm kind of wishing that I had waited another week or two and got the 16GB, but oh well, I made due with a 4GB Mini for about four years, so I think I can survive with 8GB.

I chose the second option. I love, love, LOVE my iPod Touch, except for a couple of things. The sound quality isn't great. It's good, but I wish it would be better! Also, like someone else mentioned, it doesn't support WPA-Enterprise, which my university uses! Hopefully a update will come soon to address this!! :) Or I could just convince the university to change their Wifi network! Lol!

But, really, these are not such big problems (well, the campus thing, maybe a little)! I LOVE my iPod Touch!! The best purchase I've made in a long time!!! :D

A "jailbreak" iPod Touch is definitely the way to go. I agree with others, Apple's gonna have to make a hellva update to get me to give up these goodies.

Got mine yesterday and I love it so far! Except a lot of people are asking if it's the iPhone....:o

So far I jailbreaked mine and customized it a bit.

imo, jailbreaking is worth it. I thought the original icons and such were nice, but after having fun with customizing themes....I can't even dream of going back to the norm. :D

Plus it's great to have Mail on the Touch. (Amongst other programs as well)

I like it, but I'm frustrated by the issues around the smart playlists, the problems that mine has with it's clock, and it's unreliability in updating the play count.

Today (October 18) I played an album this morning, then some tracks on shuffle, and then some more tracks manually chosen and then some on shuffle. Synching with iTunes, the album showed up with a play date of June 20, the shuffle tracks showed as never having played, and then the manually chosen tracks showing correctly. Annoying.

It also needs external volume controls, the headphone jack is on the wrong end (why next to the connector cable), and flash/java for Safari.

I'm looking forward to the 3rd gen touch in a couple of years when I imagine the annoyances will be resolved and storage greatly increased.

Is There Anyone Actually Happy With The Ipod Touch?

All I see are complaints and problems and this and that... Anyone actually buy one, load it up with tunes and listen and use it with no problems at all?

Anyone actually jailbreak it and without any problems at all still use it with all the apps and love it and listen to music and use it everyday without any hassles?

just wondering before I buy...

Thanks!

On a message board like this, you are going to see mostly complaints. People that don't have complaints or problems aren't likely to post here. You aren't going to see a lot of posts that say, "Hey, I really like my Touch!". They aren't going to take the time to do that. People mostly post here when they have questions and problems.

I have a few issues with the Touch. I have problems connecting to a few, but not all, free wifi hotspots. There have been some theories bandied about, but I'm still not sure what the problem is.

I also have a few other gripes, but in general, I love the Touch. It was a snap to set up and use. I think most people like it as well. My brother-in-law has one, and he likes it too. And of course he never posts here, because he likes it and doesn't have any problems with it.

Yes, very happy. Non-jailbroken, using 1.1.2 FW with iTunes 7.5.

If you're swayed by all the complaints, keep in mind that people with problems are the one that create posts because they need answers (or need to vent). You don't often see threads like "I love my Touch and everything's going great!" For every user with a problem, there are probably dozens of others happy as can be (and silent).

all you can see here is just small percentage of touch users. not everyday users need to come this forum.

I have no problem, excepting known bugs (like changing date & time, sometimes crash safari, & google maps, no flash player, etc) I think that every users have the same bugs. other than that, everything is just fine.

sound quality is great because I use v-moda vibe earphone. it delivers great sound. connectivity between itunes and touch works great.

don't listen to small percentage of users here. if you like it, go & buy one.

all good points, I wouldnt really care for the wifi much, just to download stuff. I would use it mostly for music, photos, agenda, calendar, etc... The wifi and all that extreme stuff wouldnt be so important to me.
So i guess everyone is mostly happy.

Can't fault it really- I've never suffered any problems like you read on this site. I rarely use wifi , just use it for great sounding music on the move. Album artwork looks amazing on that screen too. You won't regret buying one.

I'm pretty happy overall. But I must say that I bought mine more for the PDA potential and the ability to view video and listen to podcasts. I'm not as much into the music aspect. I bought it with the idea of reading eBooks and other documents and to be able to sync my calendar, contacts, etc. I was looking for a replacement for my aging Palm TX. I realized when I bought it that it was more potential than anything else as far as using it for reading eBooks and as a PDA. I'm optimistic that we will be able to tap into the potential some day soon--with or without Apple's support and approval! However, I would prefer WITH Apple's support and approval. If Apple will open it up to store, view, and run local files, then it will be a perfect device for me.

As it is now, I find it functional. I'm able to read HTML eBooks and PDF files while connected to WiFi. Although I can email attachments to myself via an IMAP account like Yahoo and read these files offline (without WiFi connection), it is not as good and Mail disables hyperlinks within attached documents. Plus I cannot modify documents. But as I stated, the potential is definately there to improve the touch and make it a true pocket computer.

I am very happy with my iPod touch, I love it to death and am so obsessed with it. Constantly using it and getting stuff for it and reading about it (ilounge especially). Altough there are some features that I wish it had like: larger memory, a built in speaker, bluetooth and being able to use it as a hard drive. Hopefully all these features will be available in the second generation iPod touch.

i wish they'd concentrated less on pointless applications like the calendar (really who can hear the alarms - my watch beeps louder!) and more on the music player experience:

id3 tag reading and editing
decent playlist creation
song movability - adding/removing from playlists on a per song playlist (or at the very least being able to easily add the current song to the on-the-go playlist)
an equalizer we could configure (rather than have a dozen totally crap presets)
lyric support
ogg support
flac support
a visualisation or two maybe? (my mobile phone comes with several)
BLUETOOTH (with AADP)

overall I think the music player is pretty average. My current and my old phone are actually substantially more flexible player.

Wish to God that Safari wouldn't keep constantly crashing.

I love my iPod touch. I had my doubts about getting one and was on the fence for quite a while.

But as soon as I got mine and took it out of the box, I fell in love instantly. It's now, hands down, my favorite iPod.

Considered as a music player, it's distinctly average. Sound quality is at the lower end of the 'known names' pack when you consider the wider market (although perfectly acceptable of course), EQ is crap, control over your music is somewhat lacking; the level of control is pretty much what you'd find on a bottom-dollar player. On the plus side, it's as slick as ever - actually, even slicker.

As a PDA it's quite useful but still half baked. The lack of really basic features actually lets it down more than the bells & whistles. I walk around with a PAN (Personal Area Network, basically I'm my own mobile access point) so the wifi is sufficient, although Bluetooth would make it more versatile.

The web browser also doesn't wholly stink and perhaps more importantly is very nice to use, and to someone with a UMPC it's a smaller, handier thing but there are a few times too often where Safari's crappiness, let alone it's lack of web media support (which many phones, let alone web-facing PMP's possess), lets it down. Still, it is almost one-sixth of the cost of my UMPC so I'm not going to rag on it too hard.

Everything it does is nice to use. But when it comes to the substance of what it does, I find the Touch lacking, and what makes it compelling to use is that what relatively little it does is very well implemented in terms of look & feel. It blinds you with the experience, so you don't really worry that it's a pretty crap PMP, a mediocre music player and a half-assed everything else.

Despite all that I like it as a thing to fiddle with, and it gives me a warm feeling of geekless geeking: i.e. In what it does do, it really does "just work" and the UI is killer.

I love my touch, and don't regret the purchase one bit. I bough it used, online for $200 (8 gig).

WiFi - I haven't had a bit of problems connecting like some of the people I have read in here, I guess I've just been lucky. I was a little disappointed with the lack of an IM app upon purchase, but I prefer Meebo now anyways (cause it doesn't use storage space).

Music - I LOVE the interface for browsing music. Wouldn't change a thing.

Videos - widescreen is awesome. being able to delete podcasts and movies after watching them is a great thing.

I haven t tried the new apps cause I don't wanna spend $20, but I cant imagine that they would better my experience. They aren't that relevant to me.

Yes, I totally love my new iPod Touch. I just got it last week and it came on version 1.1.3 with the new apps. Maybe i'd love it even more if it was jailbroken but I don' t know how to do it on a fresh 1.1.3
The Touch is by far the best mobile web browser I have ever used. I own a psp slim and 2 wifi enabled phones but they are no where near the speed and ease of use of the touch.
The only thing I'd like to have is dedicated volume buttons. I don't really like to keep pulling it out of my pocket to change the volume.

Hell yes I love it! I use to have an axim and sold it but I always told myself as soon as Apple comes out with a PDA im grabbing it. Sure enough they did. Sooo much easier to use then the axim I thought I would hate touch typing but find myself doing it fast with my thumbs. The wifi is great.

Only gripe though I would like more freedom with my music on it. Would like to delete things, switch things around and set a playlist on the touch itself.

Happy overall. Jailbroke it but ended up with a lot of stability problems (basically I had to restore once a week). I'm hoping the SDK will fill in a lot of the missing bits.

I've given the iPod Touch 3 chances and I'm still unsure if it strikes out or not. Every time I didn't own one I found situations where it would be incredibly useful, but every time I owned one I wanted my Nano back. So I have to really judge it as Apple advertises.

MP3 Player - If audio is your main focus then this thing straight out sucks.
- The reliance on touchscreen for the most basic of actions cripples the device. You literally can't do ANYTHING without whipping it out. And considering it's price then it's not always wise to whip out a $3-400 device in some areas. They won't even make a remote and their strict rules to 3rd party keeps anyone else from doing it
Grade: D-

Video - It's a very good video player but loses some points on not supporting anything but mp4's. But what really makes me nuts is that they've intentionally screwed over their loyal customers by "upgrading" it to component ($50) and killing off our old peripherals by disabling the dock connector from doing video on older devices. I have a Sonic Impact video player that used to work with the Nano and Touch but recent firmwares closed that hole thus rendering the external video useless. Thats not cool.
Grade: C

PDA/Internet - Even before the new apps this was a great basic PDA and internet device. Keyboard works great after learning it and especially with email on board then it can replace a computer for some people. Plus, the future of apps are great with Jailbreaking and the SDK coming around.
Grade: B+

Overall: C-

So overall I really love the thing but since it wears the iPod name then I have to say I'm extremely disappointed. If they just bring back some buttons or something it will solve a lot but until then I have to say the Nano is the best iPod. That doesn't mean I won't keep the touch though. $266 for an internet /video device isn't so bad, just as long as I keep my music off it.
