View Full Version : Back of Your Touch Scratched Yet?

I have noticed that despite the fact I didn't have anything in my pocket, I have never let it come into contact with any sharp object, it somehow, someway, has small scratches now on the back of it. Does anyone else have very small scratches too on the back of your device?

If not, how do you protect the back of your iPod? Also, if you received your order just two days ago, are you able to exchange it at no additional cost?

Yea, mine also has a few scratches on the back. One big one a couple small ones. I used my 5.5Gen Video sleeve for my touch. I just got my invisible shield so that will help.

Do you kinda feel like you want to exchange for a fresh new unit to apply inivisible shield on and stuff? You know, just to make sure you have a perfect unit?

Not really. I don't think its really worth it. It's only a few scratches, it's not going to effect the actual use of the device. Now if I had scratches on the screen that would be a whole different story.

I'm getting my Touch tomorrow and I'm not gonna take it out of the plastic it comes with until I receive my invisible shield. I'm just gonna cut a small hole or something for the usb port.

Good idea^, I wish I did that when I got mine. I was too excited and I just ripped it open...oh well:D

I did something that I saw on another forum somwhere.
I used the black plastic inset that the touch rests in inside the packaging, I cut the edges off, cut out notches for the hold button, dock connector and headphone jack, then I took some thin double side adhesive foam and stuck this new back plate to my touch. I found I wasn't getting great wifi reception so I had to cut out a notch for the antennae, which was kinda hard since the "back plate" was already adhered to the ipod and I didn't have any more double sided foam, so I had to cut it out(sloppily) with the ipod in the case.

It only protects the back, but thats really all I need until some cases come out, the front hasn't had any issues with scratches yet, I already had a few on the mirrored back before I did this and I only had the touch for a day. I'm not to worried about residue from the sticky foam, that can be cleaned off with some goo gone or similar product.

It doesn't really add much bulk and from first glance at the front you can barely tell it's there.
Since the insert has a big hole in the middle I covered it with the included apple stickers(1 on each side).

This was exactly the same with the first-gen ipod nanos! When it came out people were complaining all over the place that the back scratches so easily... you didnt have to have a key, pen or something in you pocket, it looked as if only dust or a chewing gum would scratch it.
I kept it scratch-free by applying a film on the front and the back, but the film on the back also got some scratches that you can see now, so the outcome is pretty much the same even though the ipod itself is perfectly scratch free :-)

I use the sleeve that came with my last iPod. Yes, the back is scratched. No, I don't really care. It's impossible to prevent, really. I'm fine with it, I don't need a flawless iPod. Plus, I'm getting a new one soon anyway because of some fixed pixels.

Very nice idea Enigma I am just using plastic rap on mine till I can get a girffin iclear my thought though is to keep using the plastic rap on the back even when I get the iclear just to prevent shift scuffing and I will put a screen filter on the front I hope hori comes out with one I really like hori filters.

I used the original plastic that came on the front for the back until my Invisi Shield showed up. I'll be a long time customer of Invis FOR SURE!!

Oh my GOD that black plastic back thing is absolutely HIDEOUS. Why on earth buy something so blatantly aesthetically gorgeous and then do THAT to it??!

I'm honestly in shock.

Thankfully mine will have an Invisible Shield on it shortly. It's still wrapped up in the plastic it came in for a couple of days until the Shield arrives - my iPod will look as gorgeous as the day it was born, and never ever have a scratch on it. :D

I don't think it looks that bad. I actually like it, good way to protect back until you get a case.

Small small scratches, decided to use gaffers tape (no residue) until I get a case.

Till then, it looks pretty good!

why do people care if the back is scratched? - the front is the important bit and it's impossible to scratch that.

Because 1. It hurts the resale value 2. It looks bad if it's scratched

it's like caring that the undersideof your car isn't clean - I'm not bothered by resale value, I intend to keep mine - technology moves so fast that the value of a 16gb touch in 12 to 18 months time will be too low to consider selling it anyway.

Bad comparison.

I covered mine because..

I like to keep things looking nice, I'm def not planning to resell it because technology does move fast like you say...there really is no point.

I like the all black look .. on everything.

Small scratches I don't mind but my 4G iPod just looked horrible after awhile. I'm not planning to scotch brite the back of this anytime soon.

Me too, it works great and is relatively unobtrusive for free. I used a bit of scotch tape at the ends when it started to peel.

I ordered a $6 iPod Touch silicon skin from EBay to tide me over until good cases come out.

Why didn't you all just order Best Skins Ever skins? You could have saved yourself about 13 or 14 bucks and gotten the same thing. It's what I use.

Mine already looks like a skating rink on the back just days after the purchase, even when I'm very careful when using it. Surprisingly, it get scratched by the cleaning cloth that comes with ipod everytime when I clean it, GENTLY.

No matter what we try, the back gets scratched in some degree. Just for short term until I get iClear etc, a clear plastic sheet you can buy at craft stores (even at Wal Mart, I think - yes, one grandma used to use to cover table or even couch?? Not too thick one) works fine along with my accessory case from Timbuk2. I had some leftover I used to use for my PDA screen. Super inexpensive less than $1 for a _yard_? It certainly doesn't protect the edge of Touch but it does a job for the majority of back. If you are using a plastic wrap, it might be easier to use Glad's Press'n Seal - much easier to handle than regular wraps. But only for a short period because it has logos everywhere! A bit tacky.

A little auto metal polish will take out light scratches and bring the back up like new. I keep my touch in one of those microfiber pouches because it gets scratched so easy, and that seems to help, the pouch is also great for everyday cleaning of the ipod.

Well then for you it's not an issue. But for others it is. Hence this discussion.

mine has very tiny scratches, but i will probably get a sleeve or something to keep it in soon to prevent it from scratching when i put it down somewhere.

I don't understand why Apple didn't collaborate with the normal case designers that they were going to release the Touch early so they could have had something designed for those of us that got them on release day.

I've got a few scratches but nothing minor and no more to come (i hope) now that I've got a sweet case for it.

It's an issue for me too! i'm not rich so i really saved money just to buy this very expensive music player. If i'm rich i may consider not taking care of it too much and once it looks ugly and scratched, i'll just buy a brand new unit again woohoo... i'm dreaming :p

I'm actually using the sleeve that came with my brothers 30GB Zune to protect it. It a bit of a loose fit, but it is a microfiber sleeve, and it slide out easily.

I've had my touch for three days now, and no scratches. I don't plan on getting any additional protection for it.

mine is uncovered with scratches only on the back though and thats cos i don't use a case any more... the back doesn't worry me and the front is durable enough for my needs.

Well I tried to use my iPod without any case, but it just doesn't work for me because the iPod hurts my hands after holding it for a while. I've been reading books on it and I browse the net a lot from it and the ipod is very uncomfortable to hold after a while without my iSkin case. I haven't heard anyone else even mention this so maybe I'm just wierd, but the iSkin is very soft, rounds out the edges nicely, and it also gives me more grip.

I was going to get a slipcase because I wanted to let the touch's natural asthetics show, but the back is too slippery and the edges are too sharp. So I'm sticking with the iSkin case for more than just protection.

I don't find it uncomfortable at all... but if it helps, just stick with the Skin you've got!

All my iPods have scratches, some more than others, but the scratches just add character as long as they're not on the screen.

he first thing that I did when I got my touch was put on an invisible shield... nut I still ended up having a few small scratches probably already there, or put on when I was cleaning off the back.

I bought the Incase protective cover and I'd recommend it. It provides a tough yet thin cover over the back of the touch. Available from the Apple Store.

Invisible Shield on the back and encased in an Agent 18 clear case. No scratches. Front unprotected - no problems or worries. Enjoying the music.
