How long will it take to be able to get the touch in 30/40/60 gig versions? i really want a touch but i dont want to go from 30 gigs to 16 gigs. When will the touch get more storage?

Well, the next one will most likely be 32gb. It might be a year or more until it increases to 32 because it is still very expensive. The next upgrade after that would be 64gb and I doubt that will be available in the next year or even two years. It might be 4 years or more until we see a 128gb device. This is all because flash is very expensive, don't count on apple to come out with a HDD iPod touch.

I switched from a 30GB to the 16GB touch. All you have to do is get rid of the movies you have already seen and create a smart playlist to lower your gb's. It's actually easier than you think.

Don't expect apple to put a hard drive in the touch, it would destroy the battery life and make the OS stutter and not run smooth. Size isn't the only reason apple is moving to flash, there are many other benefits, but with the benefits comes the obvious downside, capacity. At the rate of flash storage development I would expect to see a 32gb ipod touch for the same price as the current 16gb touch within 9-12 months.

Yeah right now it's a cost factor. I for one like the idea that it's all solid state flash and not hard drive. This was a big selling point for me. as stated above I am sure we will see 32 to 64GB's prolly next year sometime as the cost of flash comes down. but I would not expect to see this till next year around Q2 or Q3

Another crystal ball question.

The last iPods (30/80 GB 5.5 gen) were released 1 year ago. Nothing was released between then and now. Logic suggests the next release will be a year from now.

There's a lot of movement on SSD's (solid state drives) in the 30GB range. Sony is making laptops without mechanical hard drives now.

If you're looking for opinions, I'd suggest you'll be waiting a year or more for a 30GB iPod touch.

I went from an 80GB Video to an 8GB touch and am plenty happy.

I have:

717 songs most of which are encoded at 320kbps
20 videos (4 movies 8 hours in total + a bunch of video podcasts)
721 photos

That's plenty to keep me busy for a few days. Not even worth going to 16GB IMHO. WiFi keeps me entertained too with access to YouTube content for free.

The other thing you can look at is the fact that with Wi-Fi, you can stream your media to your iPod Touch. I know there are some services online that I've heard of, but you can also pickup a copy of iPhone Remote (http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/) which works fine with the iPod Touch. Fire it up on your Mac, turn on media sharing, and you can just walk across your hard drive and open anything.

Now if I can just find a nice piece of software that'll convert all my audio/video media into an HTML page with links directly to files on my iMac, I'll be set :)

this is exactly what i've decided to do. after considering either the 160gb classic or the 16gb touch, i went to the apple store to test both out...and the touch impressed me much more than the classic, storage space notwithstanding. i figure i can create smart playlists so the lack of storage space will not be an issue. the interface is just so smooth and responsive. couple that with the fact that the classic, in cover flow mode was EXTREMELY sluggish and made the music playing stutter so much that i took the earbuds out of my ears in literal disgust. apple should have never released the classic with such a glaring issue.
