View Full Version : How do you ask a reasonable question

Is it just me, or are the most rediculous questions being asked on this forum these days?

Should I buy this, how do I unplug that, can I return something to BestBuy, what's Apple's return policy, how do I get the pablum out of this jar?

Flame away.

I agree, I don't even go on this forum that much any more. The iPod Touch forum is turning into a question forum. I guess thats what happens right after a device is release. I gets boring ready question after question, I want to read about some news, hacks, etc.

Thank you for finally posting a topic that might be interesting :D

a forum where people are asking questions, gee imagine that.

So what you expect us just to discuss whatever you feel should be discussed and no one should ask a stupid question here or what you would consider a stupid question?

You certainly don't have to read this forum or the topics if you don't like it. -End of Discussion-

It's not the fact that people are asking questions. It's the fact that they are stupid questions , or questions that have already been answered and can easily be found by using the search tool.

I don't care if people ask questions and if I can I'd glady answer them, just search before you post. And I am sorry if I offended you, you don't have to flip out. :shake:

This is normal after a new release and especially since a new product came out (not just an update of a previous product).

You get a slew of new users and most of them probably haven't used a forum such as this...probably the most mature forum I've seen. Once the hype dies, it will get better.

Also remember that some people don't know how to ask questions, so the posts come out looking a bit "off".

"Should I return my iPod to Best Buy"? may actually be "I live three hours away from the nearest Best Buy and I'm unclear to their return policy. I don't want to waste a trip and I can't get anyone on the phone. Can anyone explain?"

Remember, most folks aren't even over the age of puberty on these forums.

That's one of the reason's I like these forums, it's one of the few with mature people on it who actually know what they are talking about. It's also very helpful for people who have questions. Just learn how to use the search function and how to post a question.

Most of the new people just ask what they want to know and leave. It gets kind of annoying.

no one said you HAVE to answer their questions....im sure some one else will gladly help them. i forum IS a place where people can come and discuss and ASK QUESTIONS(complicated or simple for that matter) im sure you and every one else on this forum has posted a comment that has already been posted or one similar.

Its nice to help other people and answer questions. Its for the good of the community. Once noobs stop being noobs, then they too will help out other noobs and makes the job of veterans easier in the long run,

I never said I would'nt answer people's questions. I am just saying try to ask questions in a way people will understand them, it will help everyone better answer a question.

Right now I see at least 4 topics that have already been discussed. Am I the only one who finds this a little annoying?

Why don't you put an iTouch FAQ together. Then if somebody asks a question that has already been asked, point them to the FAQ.

iPod Touch

It uses a lower case "t" - think you will find that "Touch" is registered to HTC.....

Boy, some people sure do complain about anything. People don't ask questions you like. Somebody calls a product a name you don't like. I was just typing off the top of my head. I don't tend to proof-read everything. Of course I know that's not the name of the product. And I don't call it that when I talk to people about it. But do you really think anybody didn't know what I was talking about? All I was doing was providing a suggestion because of the complaining. That was the point of my post. Not the word iTouch. Do you really think it was necessary to point that out? Did you think the word iTouch was going to "take off" and ruin your life? I apologize that the accuracy of my statement wasn't up to your standards and you don't like names that aren't approved by Apple. Look, I don't want to get into a whole big deal here. In fact I'm done with this particular thread. Call me any name in the book. Complain about anything else you like. I really don't understand why people complain about nothing. All I did was try and provide an idea to help people and maybe alleviate some of the complaining. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it led to more complaining. Why oh why didn't I just type iPod touch. Of course I'm complaining about the complaining now, so....

First off, the Enter key on your keyboard is not dangerous - please use it from time to time.

I'm glad this thread sparked a little discussion. It's not so much the questions about the product I have an issue with (although asking how to unplug the cable from the iPod is a bit much) - it's the questions that simply don't belong on this forum.

Such as:

Can I return my iPod to BestBuy?
Can I return it to Apple?
Whats better - 8GB Touch or 80GB Classic?
When will the iPod Touch be in stores?
When will iPod Touch cases be available?
What should I have engraved on the back of my iPod?
Will someone answer the phone this time when I call Apple?

All of these are real questions that have been posted to this forum in the last few days. And yes, of course I don't have to read them. But, it's like watching a really good movie on TV only to be interrupted by moronic commercials every 10 minutes - not good commercials - stupid commercials.

Wow^ :shake: I agree, although I do not have to look at the topics with questions already answered I don't want to go through all of them just to find the interesting topics.

I am not saying everyone should make topics that interest me, so please don't take it that way. I am saying do a little research before you post, use the serch function.

I bet redbirdpat comes back.

Yeah but unfortunately these threads will not make anyone of the newbies that come here use the search function, Instead they'll just make a topic, post their question and once its answered be gone.

I think this thread you created is even more lame than the threads that contain questions that people actually need help with.

I was just stood in an electrical store this afternoon listening to a sales assistant talking about the new iPod range to a customer and every time he mentioned the iPod touch he called it the iTouch. :shake:

I don't make a habit of pedantry, unfortunately you said "Why don't you put an iTouch FAQ together" - I was merely pointing out that it is not called the iTouch just in case someone did stick an FAQ together. How good an FAQ would it look if they can't get the name right?

As for the perception that people ask stupid questions, since the very first iPod hit the shops and the very first person cracked open the box people have come to this forum and others to ask questions. And since that time some have just preferred to post their questions, no matter how easily they might find the answer by a little (re)searching.

The answer would be to actively moderate all noobs posts - it's difficult enough to check the numerous posts made by members when they get sent to the moderation queue due to hitting keywords for spam prevention. They fail to see their post appear so post it again and again and again.

Or maybe you just ignore the posts that you think are not worthy of your time or effort to read or reply to. In fact this very topic comes up time and again - so maybe I should have pointed the OP to all the previous threads in the forums about nooby questions....:D

It is sad that it's so difficult to find an intelligent and ongoing thread on these boards because even when someone makes a good topic, it gets burried by two dozen "drive by" questions. And most of those could be answered by simply reading the back of the receipt or calling the store itself.

No, it's not a complaint, and it's certainly not about 'nothing'. If you are seriously interested in anyone reading your post, you need to make it legible.

It is nearly impossible to read sentence after sentence in one never-ending paragraph on a computer screen, or on paper for that matter. Hence the concept of the paragraph in the first place. Encapsulate an idea in a single paragraph of a few sentences, and then move on to the next paragraph/idea.

Maybe there's something valuable or of note in your single-paragraph post. It's pretty much impossible to read, so who knows.

EXACTLY. If u don't feel like spending time with 12 yrs olds, then move on to next thread. Just remember, the all-time-most-read-respond to thread is the What Did You Name your IPod! <gasp>

Ummm... iTouch is the name of Logitech's software driver for their keyboards.

The way this thread is going, it should be renamed Touch E.
