Well, I'm not too happy with the new nano, but I've decided to get one. I know the headphones provided w/the ipods are never all that great. So, I need some earphones that will give me crisp sound but that I can use while I work out or run. Any recommendations?

Sidenote: Awhile back I bought some ex-51s, a couple months passed then one of the earbuds just went dead. I've heard that ipods are notorious for doing that, anyone ever experience this?

Um, why are you buying something you're not happy with? To complain about it later? There are plenty of other mp3 players out there that might work for you including older versions of the nanos. (???)

As far as the 51s, you could have probably sent them back to Sony for a replacement. Not sure of their warranty, though. The more money you spend (to a degree), the better the sound quality gets. Check out the Shures or Etymotics or Westones. My recommendation is the Westone UM1s. Comfortable, >$100, great sounding, and won't break on you.

Well, the only thing I'm not too happy about is the shape. But I can live with it....I just need an 8gb mp3 player thats small and will have a lot of accessories made for it.

The 51s were out of warranty so not much I could do and I didn't want another set going out on me again. Looking for something that will stay in my ears while I run and that sounds good for >$100.

Sony EX90s stay in the ear very well

Also, it obviously depends on your ear. I love the Sony in-ears for comfort and sound for regular use, but they would fall out of my ear in about 2 seconds when I was running. I use the Sony S2 over-ear sports model for running. This has the behind-the-neck connector, and these work great in all weather, including rain and cold. They've been my running headphones for over 2 years now.

how are the 81s working for you at staying on your ears? are the buds pulling out from your canals or are they staying in there?

Well, I haven't gotten them yet. They should be arriving in a couple of days though. I'll post what I think about them once I use them.

Just got them today...everythings basically the same as the ex 51's (sound and tip wise). Not too happy with them though....if you don't have big ears the hangars won't help you out.

Sorry to hear about that. I had been using the Koss clip-ons (can't remember the precise letter/number name) for the last couple of years, but they finally bit it. I replaced them with what I thought was the same model, but Koss has either been cutting corners with new models or I somehow wound up with a really butch pair the first time, because the new ones feel very cheap and flimsy.

So I just ordered the Sennheiser PMX100 Super Aural whatevers from amazon.com for $39-ish + shipping. I read some glowing reviews, like the design, and hate the Shure e2c canal-phones for exercising. We'll see how those go, but, as I said, the numerous reviews from customers have been glowing. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PMX100-Supra-Aural-Mini-Neckband-Headphones/dp/B000E1FYS8/ref=sr_1_1/102-5438567-9433757?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1192392364&sr=8-1

Keep in mind, though--I'm an idiot/moron........ ;) I have an 80GB Classic that just works.

Good luck shopping...again....

They have the second gen Nano 8GB refurb for $150 on Apple's site.

My big concern is, will the refurb have any scratches? As I see it, the new nano and old nano are the same (for what I need) except for vid on the new nano. Is there any chance I would get a refurb with some scratches?

No, they go through a refurbishing process. Read the hype on apple.com refurb section. They are all quality guaranteed etc. So it should look like new.
