If you are an existing AT&T customer- have you had any luck using the iPhone with your current (pre iPhone) plan?

I'm an existing AT&T customer, and want to keep my current calling plan, but still want to use the other features (Wi-Fi especially). I've seen some apps that will unlock it, but wanted some real world feedback.

I know I've posted these questions before, but I'm looking to purchase a phone this wknd- and just want to be prepared for what's in store for me..

Thanks again

I had no problems. Was an existing Family Plan member, it was as simple as indicating in the activation process that I already had a plan, was replacing a phone (rather than adding one), chose which add-on data plan, and it all just worked.

You're going to be offered three levels of data add-on: $20 a month for unlimited data plus 400 SMS messages; $30 a month for unlimited data plus 1500 SMS messages, and $40 a month for unlimited data and unlimited SMS messages. This is an add-on to your existing plan. In my case I also had an existing data plan that I cancelled (had to call AT&T support to do that), so I recouped $10 a month from the cost.

Also note...I was a Cingular subscriber before AT&T, and they never had my social security number listed with my account. Without that, I was unable to activate. Had to go into a store, physically, with proper documentation, to make that correction. After that the process went perfectly smoothly and I've had no problems with the phone or calling at all (I've been using it for two weeks now).

Now that I look at it, my $20 data add on only gets me 200 sms messages, what a rip. SMS is probably one of the most fun features on iphone.

I was on ATT before the phone came out. I've had no problems whatsoever moving from my Blackberry to iPhone on ATT.

Currently I'm on AT&T and my contract just expired. Will they add another 2 years to my contract by activating and adding the data package?

Affirmative, activating the iPhone resets your contract for two years regardless of where you're at on your current contract. I think there is also a $30 activation fee (lame)

I'm a current AT&T customer and had no problem at all moving my phone number + plan from my W810i to the iPhone.

I had no problems switching over to the iPhone with my family plan. I had a $40 unlimited data plan for my 8525, so it was nice to lower that to only $20 a month, and I got the 200 SMS messages on top of it. I was only 3 months into my 2 year contract for the 8525 and I had no problems getting a new 2 year contract for the iPhone. No penalties or fees.

Did anyone activate that doesn't have their own name on the AT&T account? I'm told that the account holder(I'm on a family plan) has to have their own iTunes account.

I was a prior AT&T customer. I bought my iPhone on iDay, activated it in 10 minutes, am using my same family plan, with the $20/month iPhone data rider.

I have had no problems. The whole process was smooth as silk.

I'm talking from a hacking standpoint (ie no purchasing additional services)

Like I said in a previous post, I just want to pop in my sim card- be able to use the Wi-Fi feature- and go. No additional data plan. I just don't need it..

Thanks

This won't work unless you unlock via a hardware/software hack.

..Which is why I'm asking for success stories..

No problems here. I didn't want an iPhone plan because I would have lost my corporate discount. My phone was hacked minutes after buying it in order to put my sim card in (I must've looked like a bum going around begging for a paper clip). My friend brought his laptop for the trip. Everything works except Visual Voicemail.

Would you mind sharing the procedure you used??

Thanks..

I'm definitely thinking about getting an iPhone now because I just got a couple nice new web design jobs and can spare the money, but I had one question.

If I already have the unlimited text plan with AT&T, will I still have it when i do the $20 data plan or will I only have 200 SMS texts?

You're allowed to upgrade. It's identical to the media max plan.
