Obviously the camera lens is flush with the iphone's casing, which is a poor decision on Apple's part I think, since every time you set the phone down it has potential to move and scratch the lens. Since the camera lens is no replaceable and plays an obvious huge role in taking pictures it poses a problem. I wonder if anyone will experiment with scratch reducing cleaners and that sort of thing like with the ipod.

Assuming the lens uses the same optical glass on the screen, I doubt it will be scratched any worse.

The lens is so small and the camera so low resolution that a scratch on it isn't going to make any difference whatsoever. You'd have to scratch it so much that it became opaque before it would degrade the image quality. Just roll with it. The camera on iPhone is just a toy anyway.

thats a matter of opinion surf monkey, I happen to come from a far lesser quality camera phone (nokia vga) and the screen and camera quality make the iphone a jewel to me. Not only that, but I've noticed one finger print can change the image clarity when viewed on my computer. The iphone has all but replaced my regular 8MP digital camera.

As part of my graphic design business I do custom photography for clients. When I say that the iPhone camera is a toy, I'm not doing it just to be difficult. Besides, your statement that you've replaced your eight megapixel digital with the iPhone doesn't really do much to bolster your credibility.

He's not taunting, he's being factual. The iPhone camera is not designed to replace a professional camera, although it does take rather good pictures. Again, assuming it uses the same optical glass as the front, it won't get scratched any worse. And don't forget it's not completely flush, it is lowered about a millimeter or so into the back casing. The chrome ring around it also attracts dust away from the lens, as well.

For the love of god I KNOW its not supposed to replace "professional equipment" and thats not the issue here. And again, here we go with the "assuming it uses the same glass" thing quillz which you are merely speculating.
