I'm stuck in a contract with t-mobile and want the iphone - is it possible to fake activate it and use it until my contract is up - then reactivate it the real way and get an AT&T plan?
so fake activate -> deactivate -> real activate.

I'm almost positive that you can do this. If you do a sim unlock/hack and then activate it with tmobile, at the end of your contract you should be able to restore the iphone to its default settings which would relock its sim. then you should just be able to sign up with at&t with no hacking involved!

Yes, a full restore to the current firmware version will basically return the iPhone back to its default state.

This is even more straightforward if you're simply activating the iPhone (ie, to use without the phone features), rather than SIM-unlocking it (ie, to use with your T-Mobile SIM card). SIM-unlocking modifies the modem firmware, which doesn't always get restored from iTunes if the version is already the same.
