Try locking it then unlocking. Wham. Wallpaper. Its kinda pointless having a wallpaper behind your icons because it would be so hard to see the icons.

Is it hard to see the icons on your desktop when you use wallpaper?

The reason Apple doesn't allow wallpaper on the iPhone desktop is because they have a clean design aesthetic and they don't want people messing up the look of the device. It really has nothing to do with legibility of the icons.

It's not fair to compare the iPod's screen to your monitor, monitors are huge, the iPod's screen is 3.5 inches.

People use wallpapers on all kinds of smaller screens on PDAs etc. The icons show up just fine. It all depends on what wallpaper etc, which should be the choice of the consumer.

It is fair to compare the iPhone desktop to the PC desktop. The screen has more resolution than a lot of monitors did just a few years ago. Besides, as the post above notes, lots of devices with much smaller screens get desktop wallpapers. It really is more an issue of aesthetics than it is usability.
