Ok, so I got my 2nd gen Nano on ebay and at a 30% discount to buying it in store, (discount = (retail*1.065 sales tax)-(ebay price+shipping)/(cost in store))
So I will check once per day for Nano's, both 4 and 8 gig and choose the cheapest that will close that day at that time.
I will watch the closing price and make a spread sheet that will calculate the best fit function of discount as a function of days since released on Sep 5.
This will give us some idea when the Nano will come down in price and when lower bids can win, (My nano savings are up to $5 so it will take a few months before I can spring for one).
Oh, important note, I only track Nano's offered by those with 99%+ positive reviews.
Here are the numbers for Sep 13:
Days since release: 8
8 Gig: Sold for total cost of $215.82, premium of 1.83%
4 Gig: sold for $163.49, premium of 3.03%
As you can see, currently there seems to be a shortage of Nanos in retail locations which has created increased demand on Ebay and bid up Nano prices to insane levels.
Currently there are 76 items up for bid under "Ipod Nano 3rd Generation" up from 71 last night and 48 the night before that.
This indicates that Nanos and Nano releated goods will quickly increase in supply and bring down the prices.
I predict 100 3rd gen Nano items for bid by the end of weekend and discounts on Nanos should finally appear by Oct 1.
As Apple floods the retail market in time for christmas, we should see discounts of 10-15% by the end of the year, though I will need much more data to be able to offer a date by which 20% discounts will be available.
That's all for now, thoughts?
