I just joined audible today and chose Stephen King's Bag of Bones as my free audio book. I downloaded the audible software, downloaded the file and now I need to import the file into iTunes. I can't get it to work. I tried importing using the file menu and drag and drop. The file just doesn't show up. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with audible customer support and he couldn't get it to work and he has no idea why. When I first downloaded the audible software it asked me to register my pc and portable player. Under portable player, my cd burner was listed... iPod wasn't a choice. I clicked next and it automatically connected to the internet and did the registration. Now I try to activate my iPod and it isn't found at all. Could this be why things aren't working right?

I'm getting so frustrated with this... any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hmm, that's a tough one. Sounds like AudibleManager is fine. Not sure why iTunes won't import the file.

1) Which Audible file format did you download 1,2,3,4?
2) Can you find the actual file in its folder? (as opposed to just the listing in AudibleManager. If you use drag and drop method, you have to drag the actual file into iTunes, not the listing in AudibleManager.

3) When you use the File > Add route, are you able to locate the Audiobook file and select it? And nothing happens?

4) Are you positive its not somewhere in iTunes. Did you look under Artist> Steven King? Or sort your library by file type and scroll through to see if there are any Audible files?

Do you have iTunes 4.2? I was able to just drag the books out of the Audible download folder and drop them into iTunes, if that doesn't work I think I'd try to re-install iTunes??? Can you drag and drop MP3's into iTunes?

I know before iTunes you had to "activate" your poratable device, that included the iPod being in the dock, Audible Manager being open and connected to the internet. Once you install ITunes it breaks your link to Audible from the iPod, not sure what you do to "activate" it with-out that conduit in place.

Don't give up, Audible is worth it ...

Cozimoto, I don't think iPod activation is the problem.

You should be able to import the file into iTunes even if you don't have an iPod.

JCV-read the audible/ipod FAQ if you haven't already, just to help you understand how things work.

I have iTunes version 4.1.1.54

I downloaded format 4 from Audible.

I just read through that FAQ and I seem to be doing everything right.

I went directly to the Audilbe file instead of the listing in Audible manager, tried to drag and drop and it still didn't work.

I am looking under artist to try to find Stephen King. I can't figure out how to sort by file type.

Can I re-install iTunes without messing up my library?

Thank you all for you replies. Any other ideas?

OK, I just figured out how to get a listing of file types in iTunes. All my files are MPEG audio files.

I just tried to play the file in Audible manager and I got "access denied". I activated my Windows media player and my CD burner. What's up with this??

JCV,

you can update iTunes w/o affecting your library. Just run 4.2 over it from the apple website. I'm not sure this will solve the Audible problem, but it will perform better overall than 4.1

As for Audible, I would call them back and start with just trying to get the file playing using AudibleManager. If the file won't play, something is wrong. Could be something setup wrong, or corrupted file. If you can't playback the file in AudibleManager, that is probably the reason it won't import into iTunes.

parannoya,

thanks for the help! That's just what I did! I haven't updated my iTunes yet but I spent like 1/2 hour on the phone with a great tech support guy and he got me up and running. There was something wrong with the file. Everything is working great now!

I will download the newer version of iTunes as well if it works better.

thanks again

Glad to hear you got it working.

BTW, the Otis would be a great player for your mom. Its really ease to use. In fact, when it comes to playing only Audible files, it is better suited than the iPod.

You might want to get an extra 64mb memory card for it. Stick with MMC cards instead of Secure Digital type. MMC works fine but some people report problems with SD cards.
