Hey Gang, has anyone noticed that their new nano's screen isn't perfectly square? I didn't notice this with the store model units, but I noticed it immediately once I purchased mine. Not sure if this is a problem all over or if mine is just a fluke. Your thoughts?

Could you post some pics as an example so people might get a better idea of what to look for? Sounds like you are saying your screen is a paralellogram but not a rectangle, correct?

Yep. I have the tilted screen issue on my new 8GB Nano as well.
It doesn't bug me all that much, but seeing as though the supplied buds are faulty (not that I plan on using very often) I might take it to a service centre and see what they say about it.

Ant there are thread about this problem in apple discussion forum. It shows this
problem isn't small scale. The thread title is "A little bit tilted?"
You can exchege it but the new one seems to be also tilted.

My Nano 3G does not have this problem at all, it's perfectly straight. I wonder how common this is?

Same here, it's barely noticeable and i'd never have noticed it if i hadn't read about it here so i'm not concerned about it.

I may not notice the tilt that much but if hubby uses it he definatly will
Mine is tilted too.
I noticed it the first time i watched a video on it. It's not exceptionally pronounced. Just barely noticeable, in point of fact.
It's no big deal.
I don't see the tilt when i am listening to music...;)

My 8gb red nano had the tilt... my eyes are drawn to it everytime I look at the screen.
I sent it back... Im waiting on a replacement, hopefully its better.
It's nothing that draws my eye especially...
As soon as they bring out the 16GB Nano, i'll be getting one of those anyway...

Add me to the tilted nano club.
I had a perfect nano, then I trade to a bad iPod touch, and then another bad iPod touch, and then to a tilted nano.
I don't mind the tilt. It's better than a bad screen!

I received my replacement yesterday, brand new in the box.... and....... NO TILTED SCREEN!
Its perfect and its week 36 for anybody keeping score. The tilted one i sent in was also week 36.

Has anyone had any luck returning one at the Apple store past the 14 day return policy?
Those of you who've gotten replacements via mail, other than LynchMOB, did you receive new or refurb products.
Also any tips and tricks for being able to tell if a replacement in a box is straight or not without it being on? On my 8G Nano, it is easy to tell when on, but when off, it seems like I'd be hard pressed to see if it was straight or not.

Has Apple acknowledged this problem? How likely is it that I get a new one with a shifted / tilted screen? I ordered a silver 8GB Nano from Crutchfield and it's on backorder.

Hi everyone
I'm about to buy a 8Go 3G nano. Is there a way to figure out if the screen is titled BEFORE buying, when the ipod is packed and turned off? (are the screen's edges titled or the image)
Thanks
You can tell by looking at the Nano whilst it is in the box.
Look at the black bars that run down the sides of the screen. They should be exactly parallel, and match up with the viewing aperture of the screen. If they are off, it means the screen is misaligned.
But trust me when i say that it's not all that apparent to me on my one(Even though mine does suffer from this, i don't really care as it doesn't degrade picture quality in the slightest).
I do appreciate that others make a bigger deal about it, and that's fair enough.

I don't notice anything? Please point it out so I can check mine also.
Gah, mine has this problem, but it's really hard to notice. The easiest way is to go in a dark room and have some music playing so you can see the gray bars at the top and bottom. It's really noticeable then, but even now, it's still hard to discern.
The way I figure, yeah, it has a tilted screen and a click wheel that isn't flush and looks more like it was just glued on, but it hasn't failed yet. As long as the hardware and software are still functional, I could care less about the screen.

My 8GB silver Nano (week 35, ordered on release date) has the tilted screen as well. I've been following the tilted screen thread on Apple's support forums and it seems that the problem has not been definitively solved yet. Sending it back for a new one is still a crap shoot. Some people have received non-tilted Nanos in return and some have not. I've read of people still getting replacement Nanos with the tilt regardless of what week they were manufactured in (at least up to week 39 is the latest I've seen).
It's a shame really, because I don't want to go through the hassle of mailing it in with no guarantee of getting a non-tilted one in return, and there are no Apple retail stores within reasonable driving distance of where I live so I can visually check out the Nano's screens before I exchange it.

I noticed that every iPod in the Apple Store in New York has a crooked screen. While slight, it began to really annoy me. The screen slightly tilts down to the left.
When I brought it back to the Apple store after one month of ownership, they replied "NO IPOD IS PERFECT, SO WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT EVERY ONE WILL BE FLAWLESS."
I would think after dropping $200 on a product, it would not have a fault like this. The 'Mac Genius' was nice enough to trade out my current iPod for one that was 'slightly less flawed' as a one time courtesy.
It's more noticeable when the screen is illuminated.

Wow before I read this thread I didn't notice about the screen tilted but then now when I check my Nano's screen properly, indeed it is tilted. Well, at least it still can be used and I am still happy with it as long as it is doing what a music player should do.

Indeed, I agree 100%. We paid good money for this device, and although I don't expect it to be PERFECT, I do expect it to be RIGHT. That really galls me that someone would take an attitude like that. How hard is it to put a screen in level? The cheapest cell phone I ever had still had the screen perfectly aligned, and it sure as heck wasn't as expensive as an iPod Nano. I don't know how you kept your cool with that guy. A reply like that would have surely set me off and probably resulted in me being forcefully removed from the Apple store.

But I'm also interested in knowing if you can take it back to the store where you bought it and showing it to them, will they replace it in most cases? Anyone got theres replaced? I'm wondering now cuz mine is brand new, so I might as well see if I can get it replaced. Sorry if I missed something, I cbb reading through all the posts
I wouldn't think so. It's not all that apparent, doesn't affect the functioning of your Pod, and will never get any worse.
I don't think they will replace it.

I got an 8GB Nano from the Apple store today and the screen is tilted slightly to the left! When is Apple going to start making Nanos with properly aligned screens? I'm going back tomorrow to return / exchange it.
I'm afraid you either have to get used to it or take it back and buy something else.
It may seem harsh, but this is the coolest mp3/video player out there. I like everything about mine, so the screen is a minor concern.
I am just about to take delivery of my second one(Another product Red), and i love these things to bits. I don't care one bit if the screen on the new one is tilted.
But that's only my opinion.
Merry Christmas!

Why those two choices? I can go to different stores to look at the units they have in stock until I find a unit w/o a crooked screen.
Totally. But on the off-chance that they are ALL crooked, you need to decide whether it would ruin your enjoyment of the product, or whether it's something you can live with.
This isn't a malicious post. I am merely stating my own preference.
The tilt on my screen is quite severe, but i couldn't be without my Nano. I don't care about the tilt, but i know not everyone feels that way(Which is your right as a consumer of Apple products).

Went back to the store today and the newest they had in stock were week 38s which all had tilted screens. Went to a different Apple store and they found me a week 45 unit. The screen is perfect.
How can you tell what week your iPod was made?
IsLNdbOi
12-22-2007, 07:09 PM
Look at the serial number. The two numbers after the first three characters are the week.
It's strange because every Nano we looked at was crooked except for this week 45 unit we found in the back of the stack. Apple's QC can't really be this bad, can it?
Ahhh...
Then in that case, my nano is a week 36. And crooked.
But it's ok. I don't care.
In any case, i have another one on it's way from the US.
And i don't care if that is crooked either!!!

I just got home from Best Buy with a week 43 4GB Nano with a tilted screen.
Call me picky but it bothers me. I notice these things and considering I'll be watching videos it's not something I can shrug off. Not to mention, for $150..yeah,I expect it to be assembled right.
I had a 4GB nano about a month ago that was flawless. But,I decided I wanted a classic. well,2 weeks with all of the classics bugs drove me nuts so I returned that and went back to the nano and now this.
Very frustrating.

My friend's 8GB is a week 36 and also tilted. I had to point it out to her!
Most of the 4GB's I've seen though don't have tilted screens.
A friend of mine just bought me a new 8GB Product Red and it is a week 50, with totally fine screen.
I have compared it to my week 36, and the difference is astounding.
I know this doesn't really help out anyone with a tilted screeen, but it looks like they eventually got it sorted out.

I just picked up a week 44 at circuit city and it's fine. They had one other 4GB that I could see and it looked like a tilted screen as far as I could tell. I do not recall exactly but I think it was a week 36...it was in the 30's.
Also FYI 4GB nanos at CC come with a free $15 itunes giftcard. They also have their nano's out in the open so you can inspect them. My CC only had two 4GB'ers left so I was lucky one was ok.
It seems any from week 'mid 40's' and later is ok.
No,in the grand scheme of life it's probably not a big deal but at the same time you are dropping $150 of hard earned money on something you deserve it to be made right.
That's fair comment.
Now that most of the die-hard iPod fans know about the problem, there will probably be a few more that come to the attention of the sales staff, although they will undoubtably just foist them off on unsuspecting customers.
So many people even on this forum did not even know about it till this thread!!!(I know i didn't)
The screen on my first one is fairly severe, but it didn't spoil my own enjoyment of the device(But as has been said, it's a fair old chunk of cash for something that's not right):
