I've been disappointed so often in the past when it comes to iPod, that today's latest misadventure should have come as no surprise.
Here's my sad, sad, story. (Long)
I'm sitting at home watching T.V., Murder She Wrote, if you care to know, when I hear the phone ring. I didn't really want to get it, I'm lazy, but I thought, what the heck? I pick it up and hear
"Is Justin Nelson there?" Yes, that's me", I said.
"Well we have a 15GB iPod here ready for pick up in your name."
!!!!!!!!!! I can't remember the rest of the converstation but after I hung up the phone, I screamed. The day had finally arrived!
I decided to go after dinner with my brother, who is almost as excited about iPod as I am. The Compusmart store where my iPod was on hold was far in the south of the city, but luckliy it's really close to a C-Train station ( sort of like a subway, but above ground) so I didn't have to worry about transportation. We left in high spirits, glad that all my obsessing was about to come to an end, or at least a new beginning. The train ride seemed longer than usual, of course, but we finally got to our stop. I wasn't sure exactly where the store was from the station, but happily, it was very close, a 3 min walk.
My brother and I walked into the store and browsed around, playing on a beautiful iMac for a few secs, then got up the nerve to go to the front desk.
"I have something on hold here. Do you have it for me"?
"What is it?"
"A 15GB iPod", I squeaked.
"OK, let me check."
He confirmed my order and talked to some other guys about it, and everything looked great. They sent someone to the back, and while that happened this one employee joked that they in fact did not have iPod for me. I got scared, but it was only a joke, so, phew. Then some guy came up with the wrong size, the 30, then had to go back for mine.
Meanwhile I was using the handy interac machine (debit) to make my purchase. All of a sudden I see this tiny little box appear before my eyes.
"It's so small I said." My iPod had arrived!
The salesmen then convinced me to buy the extended warranty and I was set to go. Only there was a little snag. My account limits me to 500 dollars worth of debit purchases a day, so I found out, so I was kindly told to go to a bank machine and withdraw the rest and pay cash.
I went with my brother in tow, a little nervous but still optimistic. I do all the fun bank machine stuff and get a lovely message,
AMOUNT REQUESTED EXCEEDS BALANCE. What?!??! I knew I had at least another 300 dollars or so in my chequing account. What was up? So instead of trying to take out $200 dollars I tried $100. That worked fine. I then tried for another hundred, no luck. Then it slowly started dawning on me that my crappy account had a 100 dollar a day withdrawal limit. The ultimate snag. I was now short 95 dollars from the iPod/extended warranty combined price. NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I got a little upset. :(
Not knowing what to do, me and my bro went back to the store and talked to the helpful salespeople. I asked to use their phone to call my dad for help, but I couldn't find him. He wasn't at home, and his stupid cell was deactivated. My wonderful brother hadn't brought his wallet with him, so I was unhappily all alone. We then decided, with the employee's blessing to stick around and keep calling my dad till the store closed - it was almost 8, and the store shut at nine. We kept calling and calling, hoping for a miracle, but all to no avail. At nine o'clock hope was gone: No dad, no help, no iPod. I had to leave the store empty handed, depressed and dejected, feeling helpless and hopeless. When we left, the storepeople told us they'd keep the 500 bucks on credit and I could come back any time to pick up my treasure. But it didn't make me feel any better.
One more day...
