View Full Version : Who's happy with the iPod touch?

There's been alot of #####ing and whining (and, to a certain extent, rightfully so) about the iPod touch but seriously, I'm sure there are many of us who are perfectly happy with it.

I just placed an order for a 8GB iPod touch and couldn't be more excited :)

Coming from a 4GB mini --> 20GB photo --> 30GB video --> 2GB nano, I think 8GB suffices - and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who doesn't mind not being able to carry around 400 days worth of music.

Agreed. Apple could've given us a 80 gig ipod touch and people would still complain about wanting higher capacities, or asking for bluetooth, or ask for the damn thing to make phone calls! I love the new iPod as well and looking to buy a 16 gig.

Me neither! I put on my favorite 800 songs I listen to on a regular basis, 5 movies, and two awesome Japanese TV shows, and made it to 13.5 GB! I still have a lot to spare for a movie or two, and it's easy to swap whenever I want.

And I don't know about you, but you can always stream your entire iTunes collection via wifi on www.dottunes.com

It costs 20 bucks, but it would be worth it! The new future holds wild.

Im happy with this. I only need about 1500 of my top songs and a few shows and movies on the go. The wifi is great. The size is great. I'm buying the 16 gb model the day it comes out.

I won't impede TOO much into this thread, mine's right below it, and there's enough debate in there already...

But....
There's a lot of people who actually WANT more space than that... And, if you factor in photos (which actually don't take up TOO much room,) and videos, come on, 16 GB is NOT that much space.
Not saying that it won't be a huge success, or that it's not a great player, but come on, it's NOT much space.

The capacity isn't MY main issue, I can manage my 1GB shuffle pretty good..its the controls that make the iPod Touch impractical for my needs..i.e. I'd have to take it out and look at it to get another song.

The reason people are upset is because this is the first time, (as far as I can remember) in iPod history where the most expensive iPod did not have the highest capacity.

What this means, is that for the first time, people have to pick their iPod based on parameters independent of how much music they need to bring with them.

I, for one, do not like having to make a sacrifice to an aging menu interface just to carry my library. I also do not want to make a sacrifice to a smaller capacity than my 2 year old iPod for the sake of an interface and web capabilities.

Apple touts Safari on iPhone and touch as the "real internet" and not the "baby internet."

How about a real iPod too?

Im actually thrilled about the IPOD Touch, I already ordered the 16gb off apples site. I mean if you care so much about storage, go with the classic, if you care about money go with the nano and if you want it all go with the touch.

When I first saw the iPod Touch, I was almost ready to abandon my 5.5 80GB. For me, 16GB of space is alright, since I typically listen to 1/8 of what's on my iPod on a consistent basis.

A laptop-free fully-functioning internet browser alone is almost worth it. When the iPhone first came out, I basically wanted everything on it except the expensive phone features  If iPod Touch improves the keyboard for serious writing (like novels) with later patches, I'll buy it then, or til my 80GB dies. Course having an iPod for home usage like a stereo, and one to go is appealing too.

Hey, no worries, I wasn't slamming you or your thread - I just wanted to bring the people that actually LIKES the new iPod touch *the way it is* out of the woodwork. Just seems like 90% of the posts on this board is some form of complaint or coulda woulda shoulda beens.

To each his own, 16gb is plenty for me but I understand there are people out there who genuinely *NEED* more.

The Touch is a very intriguing device, one that hopefully will help garner new iPod owners by providing a cool, intuitive interface and new ways to purchase music.

Sure, partnering with Starbucks is a bit odd; but I view it as a first step. Apple has to get started somewhere. It's ingenious to have a method to purchase music such as 'AirTunes' (as we cooly refer to it). Surely the venues with 'AirTunes' stations will multiply tenfold, with the pending success of this new paradigm in shopping for music,

I can now envision even my computer-phobic mother having a Touch and purchasing music while on-the-go.

I do like it but am not buying it, I am going for an 8gb nano (i dont own any ipod since my 4g 20gb died).

I do want an itouch.....
but its very expensive for the capacity
I also want a smaller ipod for those times you dont want to carry and exercise etc
With only 16gb it is sure to get capacity jump pretty soon............so..........

I buy a nano and wait - but it is going to kill me :(

I think they could have gone a little bigger (30GB?). I agree I don't need to carry around 40,000 songs but video [B]does[B] take up a lot of space. I still may break down and get a 16GB...

mdibella
09-06-2007, 11:08 AM
I doubt I will go for a 16gb one but as soon as higher capacity ones are available I'm there. I'd even settle for 32gb and carry 2 iPods around, one for music and one for video. I do think it's a shame that this lovely device is so obviously hobbled.

I do see why they did it though, because the iPhone is still too new to be completely overshadowed, and a high capacity widescreen iPod would have done that. In addition, it's clear that battery life would have been a problem if a hard drive had been used.

A few iPod generations ago, Apple started using a combination of hard drive and some sort of electronic memory in order to extend power. When you play a song, the hard drive spins up long enough to move the song into the iPod's memory and then the drive spins down. Hard drive widescreen iPods will have to use a similar design but videos will require more memory than what's now used for music.

Too bad there's no way to transfer music between iPods on the go, it would be nifty to carry an iPod classic around for the storage and transfer videos to your widescreen iPod when you want to watch them.

Which is a roundabout way of saying, this is a new first generation product and we will see some nice upgrades in time.

As I posted in other topics, the 16GB iPod Touch is perfect for me. I ordered on the second the store came up and am really looking forward to the 29th. I don't know if I can wait that long. I had a hard time waiting until wednesday!:D It will really be worth the wait though.

The iPod Touch is exactly what I was looking for in the new iPod and I am very pleased with apple. I predict that the iPod touch will be the second most selling iPod, behind the nano. I might be wrong though.

On my current 30gb I only have about 9 gb's filled up

5 gigs of Music (yes that is my whole collection, a total of 1258 songs. I don't know how some of you have such big music collections)

1 gig for photos (991 songs total)

3 gig video (9 tv epsidoes, 1 movie)

For my music and pictures, the touch is fine BUT since it's such a perfect device for video, I'm upset that I'm not going to be able to put more videos on it (don't have much interest in putting videos on my currect ipod since the screen is so small). I can probably fit 2 or 3 more movies but that's about it.

Am I happy about the touch? yes! I think it's awesome. But like most others I wish it had a little more memory. I would even be happy with 32 gigs.

By the way, does anyone have a link to a good step by step tutorial on how to rip DVD's to the iphone (I assume it will be the same process as the touch)?

I am very pleased with the Touch and will more than likely get the 8GB version. That's plenty of memory for my needs. I lived with a 2GB Nano a long time, so 8GB will be a huge increase. I now have a 30GB 5.5G but don't listen to most of the stuff Ihave stored on it. Plus I'm not willing to spend more than $299 for something of this nature.

I love the touch, and will definetly get one! I've been waiting for this product since the intro of the iphone in january, the great surprise was the release of it so shortly after the iphone, but thats supply and demand for you. It has shortcomings regarding to software, but since it runs the same version of osx that's in the iphone the limitations will not last long.

For all of you that are saying that you are fine with 8 or 16 gigs, you are kidding yourself. You know that you could get 80 gigs for CHEAPER. There is no reason to "settle" for 16 measly gigabytes when you could get so so many more.

What's the point of getting 80GB when we would never use all of that 80GB? I have a 2GB nano that's not even full yet. 8GB would be lots and lots of space for me. Why buy something you're not going to use?

Uh, please point me to where I can get a 3.5" touchscreen iPod with WiFi and "80 gigs" of durable FLASH memory for cheaper.

Oh, that's right, you can't.

I guess I'll just have to continue "kidding myself" and "settle" for the iPod with WiFi and 3.5" touchscreen to store my 2.7gb of music. Poor me.

ill agree with you two as well, i mean if ive never fiilled up my 20 Gig ipod i currently have, why would i mean angry over having 60 Gigs that ill never use. I mean even if it was 80Gigs its not like buying that will make me never get another ipod 3 or 4 years down the line. 16 Gigs is prefect and more than enough for me really.

its clearly good for some people and not others. the majority of people though, in my opinion don't have over 16 gb of content. i could be wrong and that's fine. its great for me since i just started really getting into music. i've been collecting music for the past 2 years and am currently at 10.5 gb. so a 16gb model should be enough to hold me off for another 2 years until higher capacities are certain to be out. also, i'm not the kind of person that likes to watch tv shows or movies over and over and over again. its not like i'm watching it with friends and we're having fun laughing or being scared over it. its a personal device mainly, and after i watch a movie by myself i can just take it off the ipod :]

I pulled the trigger on a 16Gb iPod Touch. Sure, like many others, I would have liked a higher capacity on it but this just means that I'll have to be more selective in what goes onto it. Most of it will be music and then I'll add a movie a day from my collection of 750 movies. That movie will be taken off and replaced each day (I have an hour and a half subway ride each day to university so it works out great).

The wifi capability is what convinced me to go for the iPod Touch instead of an iPod Classic 160Gb. Heck, I would never listen to all 160Gb of music (or any combo of music and movies) anyway. Style wins over capacity in my view.

I have a feeling this will ship faster then excpected. It says ships BY 28th. Of course they have to put a later date, because if they put an early date and people dont recieve theirs they will complain and worry. i Would expect these things to ship in the next week or 2.

I for one should be hating the IPOD touch, but i dont. I Have over 50 gigs of music on my macbook pro and i have it all on my ipod 60gig.

Let's be serious for a second, for all of us who have all this music, do we really listen to it all? I mean i probably listen to 5 gigs of it seriously and all the time, while the other stuff is a once and a while thing. Ive never really cared for watching movies on an ipod, i mean this thing is a music player and thats all that matters. The movie feature on this is great, but id rather use that space for music. The youtube feature alone is worth it and thats enough video to watch without using space.

Lets see

Touch Screen w/ 3.5 Size
Wi-fi Internet On Safari
Wi-fi Itunes Store
Movie playback
YouTube playback w/ Wi-Fi
Photos w/ extensive controls
Calender & Clock
8 Or 16 gb of storage.

I think thats a winner.

I don't think it's a matter of Apple giving up on designing. First of all, the iPhone has an excellent design (sales numbers prove that). Second, think of the manufacturing cost....it's much cheaper for Apple to use an existing design than to spend money to get the factory to outfit the machines to make a new design.

As for the lack of a large capacity HD, I believe Apple wanted to use flash drives because they have no moving parts but also to boost battery life. There may be other reasons as well but this is all simply my opinion.

I also im not sure we would see the itouch out right now if they did a redesign. They were made as one imo, iphone happend to be released first because apple wanted to come out with a bang in the cell phone market. They have the portable music market in their pockets already. I think in time its going to be viewed as the itouch with phone capablilites instead of an itouch without the phone. Iphone is a restricted market, only Att&T customers have it and honestly i cant imagine anyone would dump service of a provider for a phone. Im sure some would but if u have been with a provider for 5 years and recieve privlieges for being a long time customer its unlikely.

To me the Touch seems like a crippled iPhone. If I want an iPhone I will buy an iPhone (and have). Obviously this doesn't apply to those outside the US who don't have the option.

The iPod Classic will be a better -iPod- by a large margin. As a music-centric device it is a much better product. The Touch is really only desirable to those who want an iPhone and won't get one for whatever reason, IMO.

It's not really very fun to dig out the device and play around with the screen just to do simple things like change volume or skip a track. I would say unless you anticipate using it as a pocket web browser as much as or more than music listening it's not worth it.

If your main focus is watching videos, then it's probably worth it for the screen (assuming you can't/won't get an iPhone).

Good point! Also, since the iPod Touch cases that have been announced aren't even available yet, Monkey Business could get the 16Gb Touch now and have a greater variety of cases to choose from once the Touch is shipped at the end of the month.

It's not just Starbucks. In the town I live in, every independently owned cafe has wi-fi. Its a college town, so there's a dozen cafes in a 10 mile radius.
