does flash memory mean faster syncing times?

Probably. One of the biggest limitation of the HDDs is that they are bottlenecks not allowing USB or firewire to reach their top speeds. Flash is quicker at both writing and reading.

I don't think flash memory will sync faster than a hard drive based iPod. It will use less power, take up less space, and provide skip-less playback. Flash memory car read and write at speeds up to 12MB per second while I think 5400 RPM hard drives (as the kinds used in iPods) read and write up to 4MB per second. So syncing on a iPod touch might go quicker but I doubt it.

Unfortunately for the OP, flash is much slower than hard drive when it comes to transfers. Comparing my 8GB 2G nano to my 60GB 5G iPod, it works out to about 3X slower.

Im not too sure but I think the Flash is much faster, anyway Flas drives are newer than regular hard-drives

flash memory does not have any moving parts, (saves on battery) , its like a flash drive you can buy at the store,,

bigger ipods have hard drives, if you listen close you can hear noises inside, thats the hard drive writting & reading. (there is moving parts)

the ipods with hard drives are fatter because its a hard drive instead of a thin flash drive.

i would get a flash drive ipod, a 32 gig touch is great!! thats plenty big, get an external hard drive of 500 gigs on your home pc to hold your library, you only need a 32 gig library in your pocket for a trip around the united states...

What's worse, the touch/iPhone devices are even slower than the nano at transferring. But yeah, flash is easier on the battery.

Let's just bump a 1 year old thread...

Truth be told, solid state memory syncs much slower than hard drives (even 5400 RPM hard drives) when handling large amounts of data. Flash memory should be faster when syncing small bursts of data though as hard drives have to fully spin up, seek for the right sectors, and start writing data. That being said, the iPod touch syncs at extremely slow speeds regardless of the amount of content you sync to them. I am a feeling that this is due to the iPod touch's OS and the way data is read, written to, and deleted from the storage.
