So, with Apple's announcement of the new iPod nano today, what are you thoughts?
The physical appearance and dimensions are definitely different from the traditional Nano or larger-sized iPod, but it now appears to have bridged the gap between the feature set of the full-size iPod and the more portable flash-based device.
Further, price-per-GB has dropped down a step from before, with the 4GB model now selling at the former nano's 2GB price, and the 8GB model now selling at the former nano's 4GB price point.
You can read more about the device on Apple's site at http://www.apple.com/ipodnano.

It's so ugly. And the form factor doesn't look like it lends itself to pocket carry and it has a stainless back, which scratches far too easily for a player whose market generally treats it poorly (myself included). The screen is too small for video, at least in my opinion. I definitely won't be retiring in my 2G red nano.
Apple: Next time, stick closer to the golden ratio.

Well, this doesn't do anything for a I-don't-give-a-wif-about-video guy like me. Still more reason to keep my (starts everyday, works like a tank) Mini.
More like a "Shorty" than a Nano. But then I don't care for the cutsy Shuffle#2 either but they seem to sell. Oh well, there will be a market for it am sure.

To be honest, my personal opinion is that they should have left the Nano as-is. My 8GB 2G nano is not going anywhere any time soon, as the size is definitely a sweet spot for a device like this.
If I wanted to play video, I'd buy any one of the other numerous devices available. This new nano just seems to target a very odd niche.

That's what I thought about the Shuffle too, but hey people buy em.
Perhaps for "entry level video." For the kid who wants to play the "video" game, but parent absolutely won't shell out any more$.

Honestly, it's hideous. They're fat, and the colors are dreadful. I don't know what the heck the people behind apple were thinking. UGH it's just awful. The new menu system looks weird (what if you don't have a song playing, huh?) and it is just UGLY. It's ugly. So ugly, that no one will want a nano anymore.
I am not feeling the touchscreen either, and if I have to buy one, it will be the new "classic".

i bought a 8gb 2g nano last week and was so mad to hear apple was going to come out with a new nano. but after today's announcement, i'm actually kind of glad i bought it.
1. new design - looks weird. enough said.
2. video - screen's too small
3. coverflow - will probably be very laggy
the only thing i'm kind of bummed about is the new 8gb price of $200. oh well, maybe accessories for the 2g nano will be discounted?
the 3g nano has a battery life of 24hrs. does anyone know what the battery life is for the 2g nano?

It's also supposed to be 24 hours, so you're not losing anything there.
Likewise, I'm very happy with my 8GB Nano, and do not see it going anywhere anytime soon.
I suspect the new iPod nano will probably be popular with a new breed of iPod owners... I can see it being a hit with teens, for instance... ("oh, it's just so cute" )

I am a teenager, and trust me, we hate it too. All the people I've talked to about it said "it's fat and ugly" before saying anything else.

I like the nano.
I didn't think the pics were THAT bad, but when I saw the smaller in-hand mock-up, I though it actually looked cool. When Steve Jobs pulled the nano out and it was similar to the mock-up, I thought it was even better.
I really don't see what the huge deal is. Yes, it's a bit of a departure from the 2G nano, but I don't think most buyers will be deterred. The price points are still great and you get more bang for the buck, which I think most people will look at more than anything.

The addition of video doesn't do anything for me so I'll stick with my current 8gb nano. If they'd added memory to make a 16gb version then I'd be interested.

Exactly, and anybody who is not used to the traditional iPod will probably find it just fine. Hence my comments about "a new breed of iPod owners."
We're all just too used to the traditional sizes and aspect ratios.... :)

I really like it, i've been thinking about getting a Nano for a while now because my 5.5G is too big really for exercising (plus i just don't like the idea of it bouncing around!) so i'm glad the Nano has shrunk even more, i guess with the armband it wouldn't be much more intrusive than wearing a watch.
Love the red one.
I doubt i'd use it as a video player though.

My 8GB 2G nano is not going anywhere any time soon, as the size is definitely a sweet spot for a device like this...snip This new nano just seems to target a very odd niche.I'm in complete agreement. I pulled out the ruler and compared it to my 2G nano and scratched my head. The dimensions aren't nearly as shove-it-anywhere friendly, and the chrome backplate is a further strike against what made the 2G so darn nice. The screen size makes video a novelty at best. It seems more like they wanted to unite their hardware support for the "legacy" iPods (identical resolution, identical interface) so they can figure out how to make the iPod touch more mainstream next spring with the inevitable refresh.
I appreciate the drop in price, but that's about it. Dimensions aren't as nice, battery life remained the same, capacities are essentially the same, and durability took a hit. If I really wanted video and the new interface, I'd spring for the actually improved hard drive based iPod - heck, with the 160GB capacity, I could probably fit almost all my music on it.

Aluminum front and stainless back? The same back Videos and Nanos have been sporting for the past two years? The oh so easily scratchable steel back? I won´t be going anywhere even near this Nano, coverflow or not. And just 8GB? Everybody was hoping for 16 GB. And the size! I agree with jhollington: my 8GB will stay put until something better comes. And where´s the orange? I love the orange! No colors just those dreadful 5.

The colors are a problem. The silver and black are fine, the others almost look pastelle... definitely more feminine than I'd like to see. I like the
I do like the rest of it though. The interface, the size... the form doesn't bother me.

Well I have a couple of complaints:
- too small, the 2G was small enough and that thing looks so thin that it would hurt the reliability of it.. (i.e. getting crushed in your pocket)
- video, what a joke on a screen the size of your thumb
- the colors are horrible much like the shuffle..the only one I'd consider are of course the black or silver..the other colors are pretty girly.

If they had come out with a high capacity widescreen iPod, I wouldn't consider this nano, but since I couldn't get what I want and still hope they will come out with it later (thus giving me no reason to get a classic), I sprung for a black one.
I had a 20 GB 3G until this year when I lost it. The new nano's screen is the same size as the 3G had but with color and a lot more resolution. And the area of the new nano is about the same as the area of the old nano, so it really isn't any bigger (though not as attractive). The fact that it is closer to square may mean it won't bend as easily, though I don't know if that was a problem with the 2G nano.
I don't like the colors (what's wrong with basic blue, red, and yellow?) and I don't like the edges. But I had thought about getting a nano anyway and they basically knocked $50 off the old price. So what the heck.

The only good thing to be said about the screen size is for those of us with fading eyesight... (yes, I started to need reading glasses this year). For video purposes, too small!

I like it and I'll be buying one. I currently use a 2g shuffle. I don't like my daughter's 2g nano because the screen is too small to read the menu or play the games. Her video ipod is nice for that stuff but too big to carry around on a daily basis from house to car to work to car to house to gym...... This new 3g nano fits my needs perfect. It should fit all my music, it will be full but it will fit, I can see and read the screen and play an occasional game and it is smaller and lighter and easier to fit in a pocket than the old video ipod. Not diggin the colors but I can live with the black or silver. I'm good with the price point too.

I am in almost EXACTLY the same boat.
I had a 20gb 4G which was dead and want some small 'carry everywhere' type ipod...which I now have since I ordered a new 8gb black.
I want a small ipod and a large capacity itouch...but its not here, so the nano will tied me over cause I wanted one anyway.
If they had come out with a high capacity widescreen iPod, I wouldn't consider this nano, but since I couldn't get what I want and still hope they will come out with it later (thus giving me no reason to get a classic), I sprung for a black one.

I'm really liking the new nano although the colors suck. I'll buy the 8g when Colorwarepc.com gets them then I'll have it painted the colors I like. Plus that will take care of the scratchtasic stainless steel back. I'm thinking Cotton Candy body and button and Fusion back and click wheel. Or, Envy body and button, Mystique back and click wheel.

The Apple guys must be smoking crack. Seriously. Every ipod release thus far has been blown me away. This new nano is completely stupid. Why on Earth would they release a nano with video functionality and not upgrade the memory to 10, 12, or 16 gb? That's the stupidest frickin thing I've ever heard. I've got a 2g 8gig nano and it holds just enough music to keep me satisfied... but no room for video. Screw that. I was ready to upgrade but there's not much point.

My wild guess is Apple may have been handcuffed by the availability of flash memory. There have been many news stories about Apple pushing the flash market to its limits. It may have been impossible for Apple to put double the memory in all their new products (16 GB in the Nano and 32 GB in the Touch).
This thing is a serious swing and a miss. Apple usually doesn't miss the mark like this...
Instead of a fantastic stand alone music player--small, with a color screen, or a stand alone video player with a larger screen (which is easy enough to incorporate a music player into anyway), Apple has combined both into a package that does neither well.
Honestly, a substantial number of people don't want a nano style player for video capability, they want it to play music, be relatively small, good battery life and have decent memory. The previous gen2 Nano was the closest to the perfect flash based memory player yet developed (The only thing I'd have liked is even more memory and a customizable EQ). I'm certainly not getting rid of mine anytime soon, and I'll probably by refurbs if/when it dies.
As for the video component, the screen is tiny, and 8gb is going to be stretching it. This isn't a good marriage for the video side as well.
Now Apple has an important hole in there lineup--a small music player with a screen. The size of the previous Nano was perfect; this new incarnation is somewhat ungainly in shape. Usually Apple is so good at keeping things simple; this time they really screwed up the biggest seller in their lineup.
The rest of the lineup is just fine, but I hope Apple will add a music only smaller flash based player with a screen to the lineup.
As for the form debate, as that's subjective, but the design does appear to be a step back rather than a step forward.
Overall a big disappointmet, considering I like the rest of the offerings.

The new ones are ugly little buggers. And, honestly, if you have a flash player isn't more likely than it would be used for running, working out, cycling, etc. So why would you need video?????
Plus, the capacity sizes are the same. If that is one of the things nano owners were quoted by Jobs as wanting in the next iteration of the player, why re-release 4/8GB models? Unless new nano owners will get hosed in the near future by a higher capacity sized model like iPhone owners.
Creative now has a 16GB flash player, why can't apple?
Thumbs down, I love my 2G red 8GB nano, and it won't be going anywhere any time soon. Especially since I have the extended care plan for the next two years!

I dont think theres a problem, Nano users can finally watch video Podcasts and short video files with no problems, and it still does everything the old one did.
I prefer the new design to the old one because it'll feel better in the hand, with the 2G in my hand i could crack someone's head open and make them bleed, the edges are harsh and the body is cold. The 1G Nano felt nice in the hand and this 3G is going back to that.
I think its got a market, i need a player i can beat up without worries but can still handle video for train journeys, which are never longer than an hour and a half so i'm not really going to watch whole movies, probably just episodes.

I bought one last night. I had been thinking about upgrading from 4G to 8G anyway, and the new price point made it worthwhile. I don't really care anything about the video. The new menu system isn't "laggy" at all, with the unit fully loaded. I have to agree about previous posts regarding the stainless back.....no cases yet available, so I'll be putting a transparent film all over mine today.

I can see this new nano appealing to:
- new iPod users
- people with previous generation iPods with lower capacity than they really need now
- having a failed/failing iPod
However, I can't see it appealing to:
- previous generation nano owners
There is just no real reason to upgrade from a previous owners stand point..I mean the video..the screen is just too small and it lacks the capacity for any real video playing.
I might be the only one that feels like this, but I think this new nano is just too small..I haven't held one but I've seen the spyshots and that thing is just too small.
Another perspective?(Bear with me, the first paragraph is my own history with iPods...)
I bought a 2G iPod Nano in december last year as a Christmas gift for my Brother(Having never owned one myself).
My thinking was that my Brother would troubleshoot and if it was actually any good, i too would get one.
After playing around with it for ten minutes, he was singing it's praises to high heaven.
I got him a 4GB, though, and he quickly used up its capacity, so i bought him an 8GB one a month later(Which he is still using).
After a day or two, i bought myself an 80GB video, and i am very happy with it.
It wasn't handy for taking to the gym, though, so i "inherited" the silver 4GB from him when i bought him the 8GB.
Then i wanted an 8GB myself, so i ordered a Product Red one from the iPod store(And i gave the Silver 4GB to an instructor at my local gym).
My Red iPod was stolen from my hotel room in New York whilst on a trip to the US in may...
So i bought two new Product Red iPods LAST WEEK...(One for me and one for a friend).
In the last 10 months i have bought 6 iPods from Apple(The actual cost for them all, not including ancillary accessories has been a little over £950/$1920).
And yesterday i ordered a 3G Nano from the store(If it's any good, i'll get my Brother one for Christmas this year).
So here is my take:
I thought it looked horrible when i first saw images a few weeks back on this very site. But when you see it in a person's hand, it still looks dinky, and takes the Nano into new territory(Even though they haven't released the TOTR version yet, which THEY WILL).
The size of the screen on the new Nano isn't that much of an issue to me(The screen on my iPod video isn't very big, for goodness sake!), but it is handy to have the option of a flash based video player. I don't need to take every video with me anyway, as i always manually sync my Nano. I appreciate the square shape will take a bit of getting used to, it had to go that way to get a bigger screen.
And my final word on it?
It's iPod. I like it. Give me more...:D
Bar.

why do people say its too small? People put video on the original nano and thats just over an inch screen.

The Nano in all seriousness is the worst looking DAP I have ever seen. I would take Creative's similar looking video playing device over it. It doesn't even come down to new iPod users, everyone who is interested in an iPod but never bought one knows what the Nano looked like. They had commercials, they'd see them at school etc. Then they'll see this and go "what an ugly device." It is the biggest mis step Apple's ever made. 8GB and 4GB for Video? What a waste of space. The thing will be harder to fit in pockets, will break easier etc. That thing is not a Nano, its a disaster. For once in iPod's history, Apple screwed up badly, and they screwed up every line.
-The Shuffle colors and no capacity update.
-The Nano on every single aspect.
-The Classic just because it doesn't have white and they now phased that out. Its a classic right but where's the classic white? Plus it should have protected backing.
-the iPod Touch due to its capacity and price point ($450 for 16GB or $400 for 160GB).
The iPhone prices dropped as well because the device bombed and they need to start getting rid of them, just like how the PS3 has lost Sony $2 billion and now they sell them even cheaper to attempt to make a profit.
I complained a lot but this damn Nano is the worst un-Apple device I've seen. Its like a blackmarket counterfeit of a Creative product, not to mention that the Shuffle colors look like depressing Easter Eggs.
If your previous Nano works fine what's the problem?
My 2G Nano is less than a week old, so i know i'll have it for a while yet, but i sincerely expect to be reporting back early next week at how EXCELLENT the new Nano is.
It may seem like revolution over evolution, but it'll work out.
I guarantee it.

wait, how do you know it wont fit in pockets easily?? Its slimmer and its rounded so if anything, it will actually slip into pockets easier than the 2nd gen nano, like the Rio Carbon back in the day
They could have upped the storage but i think 8GB is enough for some podcasts and tv shows, i mean...who stores wholes series?

I complained a lot but this damn Nano is the worst un-Apple device I've seen. Its like a blackmarket counterfeit of a Creative product, not to mention that the Shuffle colors look like depressing Easter Eggs. How is it "un-Apple"? Apple made it, ergo, it's as Apple as a 512K Mac back in the day.
It's one thing to question whether it's dimensions are as ergonomic (which you actually have to try to make any sort of a relevant comment on), or if it's as durable (chrome back is a very questionable choice), but this notion that there's is actually anything definable about "Appleness" is pure delusion. People hated the design of the 3G, people hated the design of the 4G, people hated the design of the 5G, people hated the design of the mini, people hated the design of the 1G nano (/raises hand), people hated the design of the 2G nano, and, big surprise, people bash on the design of the 3G nano. Yet, every single one found their fans, was successful enough that Apple produced a sequel, and are regarded by at least some segment of the talking heads on this site as a fine example of "Appleness".
The 3G nano will be regarded just as highly a year from now because the only thing that defines "Appleness" is whatever Apple says and does.

I meant it more as "it really doesn't look like something Apple would put out" Code Monkey. The 3G, although different, still retained the same form factor as its predecessor. This new Nano is too drastic. I can understand with the Shuffle since its the cheapest of all iPods but they're taking a gamble. For once Steve's RDF didn't work on me and I saw right through the product. I won't be singing its praises, and for me the Nano died at the 2G which is how it should be, audio focussed and not wide.
I meant it more as "it really doesn't look like something Apple would put out" Code Monkey.
Or maybe "It's like nothing else Apple have ever brought out up till now".

It looks like those iPod ripoffs, thats why it looks un-apple. Like something someone made with Photoshop.
It looks terrible, everyone I have spoken to agrees, even people who don't own a 1G/2G nano. The thing is fat. It's a square. All iPods have been rectangles in the past, and this just looks like some fat thing. It is the same width as the Classic yet half the length. I saw one in Best Buy yesterday, and it still looks awful. The screen has 2 black bars at the side that look horrible, there is too much screen for the picture. It is also just too small. I mean, the length is smaller than a 1G shuffle, and people who want an iPod will not settle for something that is tiny. The nano was a perfect size, not to small, not too large, people who just wanted an iPod were satisfied. However, most people who want an iPod do not want a tiny fat thing, and will buy the Classic.

Again, we're looking at this product from the point of view of existing iPod owners. To us, it appears weird, because it's in an odd form-factor for anything Apple has ever sold.
To be honest, a lot of people thought the first-generation iPod Shuffle looked weird too, but it still sold very well.
If you look at the wide range of other products that people are using and carrying, the Nano looks a lot better than much of the competition.
I don't like it personally, but that's not the point. This is a product for a new breed of iPod owner, not the iPod loyalist.

Or maybe "It's like nothing else Apple have ever brought out up till now".
Which, if we all remember, was true of almost all the iPods...Exactly. People get all hung up on their concept of what Apple is.., but it's just an illusion. Apple once made the decidedly utilitarian looking Apple/II/IIe/IIg type computers. Then they made the so small and cute you could eat-em up first series of Macs, they made "pizza box" Macs, they've made slews of beige boxes themselves, they've made aqua coloured mini towers, they made the oh-god-they-hurt-my-eyes first iMacs, they made iMacs that look like table lamps, and so on and so on.
Just because so many people "got hip to Apple" in the midst of their 1950s appliance fetish, like everything else, it was just a phase and it's (thankfully) moving on.

Yes but Jesse, even those people know what an iPod Nano looked like, whether it be from advertisements or at school or picking it up at Best Buy. The fact that it was around two years or more with that design and they just change it that much...in a bad way, I'm not convinced it will be as high a seller.

I'm quite convinced there will be people who like the new design more. Projecting our own opinions on the market as a whole is not really a fair way to look at things.
Even if people knew what the iPod nano looked like previously, that doesn't mean they liked the old look. In fact, I've spoken to people who avoided the original Nano because it was "anorexic" :)
It's all a matter of personal preference, and assuming that it's not going to sell very well merely because we don't like it is the height of hubris.

There have been many times I've been in a doctors office, hair or nail salon, and I'd have liked to view some videos. It's a bit irksom taking my ipod everywhere though when my nano is small enough to fit in my wristlet. Even when I'm at the gym--you know in the cardio room they have tvs that are usually on the music video channel ()--I'd like to see one of my own videos every now and then while I'm sweatin' to the oldies. If I were so inclined, I'd get the new nano just because of it's smaller size and the convenience of watching a video here or there. Not sure why people keep calling the new nano "fat" though. I would have never thought that.

Hi Guys,
I've just replaced my old 4gig Mini with a nice new Black/Grey 8gig 3G Nano.
On first impressions, I think it is a really nice bit of kit. It it just the right size to slip into my pocket out of the way (no belt clips etc. needed).
I never was a fan of the original Nano, it always seemed an odd shape to me, tall and thin, which made the screen seem tiny to me. Now this new Nano seems much more balanced, the rounded corners are good for when popping it into your pocket, as it isn't going to catch onto anything.
So for £129 (from an Apple Store) I've doubled my storage space, I can now play videos and the package is much smaller than the Mini. I'm happy...
As for the sound quality - it's much better than my old Mini. After trying the video out with some Podcasts, Music Videos and a converted DivX movie file - well the quality of the screen has to be seen to be believed. To me it looks a very sharp and clear picture.. I can easily watch it for the duration of an episode of a TV show (so around 45 min). Not sure what it would be like to watch a whole film on it... I'll have to give it a try when time permits.
Regards,
Keeval

Yes, it's definitely a rather cynical world-view to assume that anybody who likes the new nano must somehow be a shill for Apple.... :)

Here's that Creative comparison again:Two quick points:
If you go to a more standard sized screen that makes video more than a throwaway, but you still want a screen above the controls, what do you wind up with? Oh yeah, a rectangle with a rectangle and a circle inside of it. It's not like either Apple or Creative have a single unique element to their designs beyond their controls (Apple has their scrollwheel, Creative has their joystick thingee). Otherwise, of course, they'll look similar since their basic functions are nigh identical. It's been said ad nauseam, but it bears repeating: Apple didn't invent the rectangle, and they didn't even invent the basic look of the iPod.
Also, even if we assume that the superficial resemblance to Creative's mini player line is more than simple convergence, why wouldn't Apple want to emulate what has proven to be a relatively popular player? Apple is not out to be unique, Apple is out to beat the competition for the indefinite future. It is arguably in Apple's interest to smudge the lines between their look and other players since everybody not in the know calls them all iPods anyhow. The more out of their way Joe Consumer has to go to buy something other than an iPod, the better Apple does.

Nah, just the way it was written, listing the price and everything like an advertisement. On other boards its, "and for $40 I enhanced my (insert whatever you want)....and its amazing."
Seriously though, if you enjoy the new Nano thats great, if you can could you post pictures? I've seen very few of it other than some off gadget sites and Apple's digitized versions. I'll have to see it in person to really get a feel for it.

LOL... I wish.
No, just someone who is happy with what I've bought :)
Edit: I'll see if I can get a picture posted up for you, as for putting in the price... well I was aiming for a mini-review, and I have seen a few people asking how much they are in the UK.. as the price does not completely reflect the exchange rate etc. (they never do :( )
Okay... I've got some pictures. My digital camera isn't the best so some are a little dodgy ;) and they don't show it off to it's full potential - you really need to see one in person. I've done a comparison shot - against my old Mini for a size comparison and the rest are of a music video and the coverflow screens.

I've owned iPods since the very first, 5gig (still, works, too). However, the Nano I bought yesterday is my fist Nano. I think it's about the coolest looking iPod I've seen yet. The first and second generation Nanos never did it for me. I really disliked the Mini (though, given how well it sold, I must be in a minority). I also prefer the original Shuffle.
I find people's very emotional reactions to Apple's recent releases, well, fascinating. When was the last time you heard a heated debate about the redesign of, oh, say a Dell computer, or a Sansa mp3 player?

You are absolutely correct. But then again, how many Dennis' do you see making complete websites just about the Dell?
All things iPod. Some people are work with and even family members don't realize that the iPod IS an mp3 player. It'll go down in history books!

Well, for the record, I decided to pull the trigger on an 8GB Silver Nano 3G today.
Part of my reason was that I wanted to get my hands on the new models for "research purposes" (related to iLounge), and the iPod classic hasn't shown up yet, and the other (much smaller ;) part of my reason was just my own personal obsession with collecting iPods ;)
In all seriousness, though, the new nano actually isn't all that bad once you actually hold it, and it grows on you as you get used to it. I suspect the user interface and firmware are virtually identical to the iPod classic, and there have been a number of nice enhancements in both models.
I still prefer the form-factor of the 2G Nano as an ultra-portable audio player, but I can certainly see how the new nano form factor would be attractive. It's a nifty little device, and may defy traditional iPod design to a certain extent, but once you're actually holding and using it, it's rather surprising, actually.
Once you've actually played with it for a while, you quickly come to the conclusion that there's a logical reason for the design, and it starts to make some sense.
It may not be an ideal or traditional design in terms of the form factor, but it's really not bad either. My only real personal complaint is that they stayed with the chrome back. I really would have preferred to see them remain with the 2G nano's all-aluminum design. The chrome back seems to fit the design even less than the height/width ratio.

Good to see that they have arrived in Canada. Sad to see that only the silver ones have arrived though (what's up with that?). My wife has her heart set on the Red and I was kinda' digging the SeaFoam Blue.
I'll call around to see if anything has changed as of today. Thanks for the heads up and the mini-review.

Well, to be fair, the screen size is actually quite reasonable for a device of its size. Ironically, it's probably around the same size as the screen on the fourth-generation iPod from a couple of years ago.
The full-size classic has a 2.5 inch screen, whereas the nano has a 2.0 inch screen, so you're only losing half an inch. It's definitely significantly better than the screen on the 2G nano, and not at all unreasonable for playing videos, particularly for the price tag.
You probably wouldn't want to watch an entire movie on it, but for music videos, short video clips, and even the occasional sitcom episode, it's really quite reasonable.

The screen is too tiny for watching videos on. You will be holding the device 15 cm from you face. If you want to watch videos but don't need 80GB you should buy Creatives new Zen M which has a 2.5 inch screen but is as thin as the Nano and as large as a credit card.

Yay new member.
Anyway, i've just ordered the 3G Nano. I have to admit that this is my very first iPod. Before this i used to be a creative fanboy. The reason why I chose the 3G nano over the zen is very simple, podcasts. I always used to brag how simple it was to put videos on my Zen vision:M, i rarely had to convert anything, great screen etc. And the iPod owners always looked back at me and said that it's a ugly fat brick and that they could do podcasts far easier.
Now tbh i really like podcasts/vodcasts and with the ZVM it's just not done, it takes hours to finally get a few on the mp3player (downloading/converting etc).
Not to mention that the thing itself is huge and isn't really that confortable in your pocket while cycling to school for 45 minutes every day.
Now i've decided to keep the 30Gig ZVM for when i go on long trips where 30gigs and easy video uploading might be usefull and use the new nano for day to day activities.
I like the look of the 2G nano better but the functions of the new nano are just perfect for me.

I love the design of the new nano and have most incarnations of ipods.
I went ahead and ordered a black one.
I am waiting for a higher capacity touch but wanted a tiny ipod with smaller capacity I was gonna go with an old nano before the refresh but wasnt keen on the screen, didnt hesitate with the new nanos.

Okay, so the question now is: what happened to the unsold 2G nanos? More importantly, does anyone know how and were they can be bought? Are they available somewhere for a lower price than the original $250? I can't believe that they've all been confiscated by Apple and are going to be crushed into scrap. Ideas?
That's a good question. Maybe you will find them appearing on Ebay?

figured I'd post my little ipod story and review :)
My name is James and....
I've been using iPod's since the 1st gen iPod mini was released, so probably not that long compared to some others!
I've bought two mini's (one for me, one for wife), then sold mine, bought a 1st gen 4gig nano. Then the wife's mini battery died out. I bought her a new 2nd gen 4gig nano (pink) and replaced the battery on her silver 4gig mini and sold it on ebay (for about $100 AUS).
When the new nano was announced, It looked a bit strange to me, but the fact that they'd added video capability was a big one for me. I like watching vid podcasts and clips on my mac, so pretty cool that I could do it on the new nano.
I listed my 1st gen 4gig nano on ebay on Friday 7th and sold it for $175 AUS (very good considering you can buy a brand new 3rd gen nano video from apple for $199 AUS!!!) So I'm happy with the sale.
I rang my apple shop on the same day, Friday the 7th, and asked my main man if he could get me a new black 8gig nano. He said "next thur/fri if your lucky".... Later that day, he rings me up, telling me how the shop got a very very small number of nano's in stock and that If I want one, I can have one (They treat me well coz I spend a fortune there).
I went in the next day to pick my new nano up... when I first saw it in person, I was quite surprised at how nice it looked. I unpacked it over a coffee at a lil cafe near the apple shop. I had a latte and chocolate e'claire. My wife had a milkshake and some scones.. hehe
anyway... i unpacked it, turned it on and had a fiddle (getting my grubby finger prints all over it!). I LOVE IT. as soon as it was in my hand I fell in love. I really loved my first gen nano, the black/chrome look is a fave of mine, which I prefer over the 2nd gen "ipod mini style" alu casing. I turned it on and had a look through the menu's, very nice.
A lot of people say the nano is the "toy" ipod for kids... I dunno, I'm 30 yrs old and I think it's the best iPod you can buy right now. Why you ask?
for me, these are the reasons:
4Gig or 8Gig is plenty for me. I have my Macbook Pro or PC with me all day every day just about, so syncing new content every few days or few weeks isn't a problem for me, so capacity isn't that important. I'd say I update my music weekly, if that.. podcasts, contacts and calendars probably every day or two. Sometimes it will sit in the glovebox of my car attached to my car stereo for weeks on end without me even removing it!
Video capability on the nano? amazing, best thing Apple have done. This is true value. Steve said it's the highest resolution screen that Apple have released on any Apple product ever, and he's right, the crispness of the screen is really just too good to be true, it's fantastic to look at, and a pleasure on the eyes! I put some movies on it and they play great and look amazing, but I'll admit after a while you will get sore eyes from looking at a small screen. It's just great for vid podcasts/tvshows, etc however!
ipod games! woot, I never played games on my other nano, coz they sucked pretty much. BUT how cool is iPod Quiz and Vortex? (addicted to Vortex today!) cant wait to try out some other games on it.
Nike+. I'm not an athlete, but I walk my dog every day anywhere between 1-5km's, and I figured since I was a nano owner I'd try the Nike+ kit. I throw the sensor on my shoe, and plug in for my walks... i can measure my distance, time, pace, and calories, pretty cool despite not having much interest in getting fitter. It's a neat gadget. It's nice having Lance Armstrong come on now and then and tell me that I'm doing a great job :) I love to plot my walks/routes using google maps too (built into nike+ web gui). Nike+ only works on the iPod Nano, a no brainer for me!
Size. It's still really tiny. got thin? i don't know how they fit all of this inside this little case. wtf! I really like the new form factor, sure it's fatter, but it ALL just for that lovely crisp 2" screen. I think it's just a great size. I had it in my shirt pocket yesterday and totally forgot it was there! light, and nice.
Build quality is top notch, screen is lovely, the new hold switch is very nice, the "click" i get when i attach my phones is just nice.
I am totally satisfied with this new nano. Despite what people say to you about how ugly they think it is, decide for yourself. hold it in your hand and browse through the menu's, it's leaps and bounds ahead of previous models, no question. This is an honest opinion/review from a real world user of small ipods.
I listen to my nano with my Sennheiser PX200 earphones when at work or sitting around, with some panasonic "clip on" phones when I'm walking the dog, and connected to my subaru car stereo when in the car (factory kenwood system with added kenwood ipod I/O box). I have some Etymotic ER6i canal-phones in the mail, cant wait to try them out!
Thank you Apple for another amazing iPod, I really don't know how you are going to improve on this model aesthetically.. impossible!

The postman came...this is a quality product, I quite liked the fatness of the pics but seeing it in the flesh - there is no way this thing could be called fat, its just too small and apple seems to have the dimensions perfect.
Only problem i see is it may be too small for some people - same as the previous nano's.
I name thee 'biggie smalls'.....now finish syncing already!
Happy customer!
People bagging on the design need to see it in person. It stunning in real life. So much better then the photos indicate.
The problem with the pictures is that it looks like the edge is very rounded and has a huge bevel. In reality the bevel is very subtle. The Nano is tiny and wafer thin. It looks great in person.
Don't hate it until you play with one in real life. Trust me. Everyone I know who has seen it has instantly fallen in love with the design and cool factor.

Well, its taken over a week for me and I can say I've warmed to the design, appreciate it, and will probably appreciate it even more once I see it in person. I think as jHollington has said, we iPod users who have owned or who have been used to the previous designs for so long will find a change like this difficult to warm to at first. I keep looking and looking at the pictures and thinking "That's what a true Nano should look like....a miniature version of the iPod Classic line." It looks just like it in shape but is much smaller, and that very idea is what allowed me to accept its design. I like it now.
Just received my black 3G Nano, really delivered fast! It is an update for my 1G Mini (still works fine) I wanted more capacity and the video. I was a little skeptical until I got it in my hands, all I can say is I am glad I waited. I use Shure E3c, and it sounds way better, and the form is too cool. The Black(sorta dark grey) is great. The pictures and even the videos do not do it justice. Yes it is different, but in this case it is a good thing....K

Well if you feel that way, you should tell this guy:
I complained a lot but this damn Nano is the worst un-Apple device I've seen. Its like a blackmarket counterfeit of a Creative product, not to mention that the Shuffle colors look like depressing Easter Eggs.
:D
Glad to see you're coming around!
After using mine for a couple of days, i can honestly say it's a far better iPod than the previous version in every respect. I have even ordered a silicone case from Ebay to try and preserve the back until i can get a clear case.

As I said, did not like that massive change at first (but that was a pretty harsh statement I made before). I'm still not fully onto the design but like it much more than I did before. However the Shuffles really do look like Easter Eggs now.

How many of you new-Nano haters have actually seen it in real life?
I got my hands on one the other day and to be honest, physically I love it a lot more than the previous Nanos. I hate the new menus and such, and for full movies it's pathetic, but it's really not ugly.
I downloaded a couple of episodes of the new season of Stargate Atlantis the other day, and yesterday at work, i sat and watched them on my Nano. I used my Xtrememac Airplay Boost for transmitting to the radio, and it works fine(Although the Boost's tuning feature doesn't seem to be 100% compatible with the new Nano screen).
I found the screen to prefectly adequate.

Finally got my 8GB Nano (red) today and wow! Very impressed with it. I can't get over how solid it feels for something so tiny. I'm not planning on using it to watch movies or anything on but i tried some of my video podcasts on it and they look fabulous, the video actually looks better than on my 5.5g iPod. The pictures on the web really don't do it justice at all, it's so much better looking in real life and i'd go as far as to say it's the most stylish iPod ever.
The new interface is very funky and the coverflow is very smooth, no lags at all. The other thing i was pleasantly surprised with was how fast it was delivered especially since i had it engraved. I've noticed that it's got that slight screen tilt that i've heard others on about but it's barely noticeable so i'm not bothered about it.
My only (slight) complaint would be that it doesn't go as loud as my big iPod - they're both UK iPods so i don't understand why they're different. It's generally loud enough apart from the odd song i have that isn't as loud as the majority of the others despite altering settings in itunes.
Other than that i love it!

aaah!! the wait is slowly driving me insane!
i definately want a nano (probably black but it depends which looks best when i see it in store) and the only thing holding me back is that i dont get paid for another 2 days! otherwise it would be mine!!
will post some stuff up on here when i do mind!
It's all down to personal preference. I bought a Black one for my Brother once i got my Product Red one. My Brother just prefers black.
It;s still waay cooler than the previous Nano when you put them next to each other.
And who can honestly say they thought there would be a Nano that made the 2G one look clunky?

I can't get over how solid it feels for something so tiny.
Got my red Nano today too. It's got heft for a little sliver, doesn't it? It's a world of difference from my plastic 1st-gen Shuffle.

My nano 3G black 8GB arrived yesterday.
Overall a cool device - bright display, a good haptic, sounds good.
There are only some points where the firmware doesn't work correctly (I have updated to 1.0.1)
* Coverflow: For each Artist in a Compilatoin is a separat cover. When I click on it, There are all Tracks from all Artists.
* Photos: Choose a photo, click with the middle button will only display a black screen. When you press play a slideshow will start normaly
The nano 3G has replaced my iPod Photo 40GB, because the formafactor. The main differents are the less capacity. It is difficult to decide which content to put on it ;-)
My english isn't very well, but I hope you understand me

Does anyone know a good basic case I can get for the Nano, so the back doesn't get all scratched up? Have any been released yet?
Does anyone know a good basic case I can get for the Nano, so the back doesn't get all scratched up? Have any been released yet?
I found one on Ebay from a seller in the far east.
I ordered one, but it has not yet arrived.
I will post a report once mine has arrived, but in the meantime, here is the item in question (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150160811990&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=005)(Not my auction. Just answering the post).
Ok guys and gals.
I got my sillicone case for my new Nano. It took about a week to get to me from the guy in the auction mentioned above(The postmark confirmed it was from singapore).
The case fits my Product Red Nano very nicely and is quite snug when on the iPod.
I have had two very small hiccups. The part which is over the click wheel must be of uneven thickness, because when i am rolling my finger around(To scroll through playlists, or to adjust the volume), it doesn't register my touch from about 3 to 6 o'clock(Between the play/pause button, and the next track button). I remedied this by taking my circle cutter, and simply removing the circle of sillicone from the front.
Also(And this may be a problem which directly affects only me), the case conforms around the front lower edge of the Pod, making it nearly impossible for me to attach my Xtrememac Airplay Boost(I use the "iPod Video" version of this product, because the 2G Nano version is too slender for the 3G Nano).
If you use a different type of transmitter(Or none at all), this would not be an issue.
I remedied this on mine by(Very inexpertly), removing about 2mm from the front edge of the case with a scalpel and a steel rule. This allows my Airplay Boost to fit.
Close enough for government work...
Pics below.
I can thouroughly recommend it until something more official comes out

Hi there! When Ilounge's review about Switcheasy Biscuit came out, I was so excited that I ordered it even though I haven't bought an Ipod nano g3. :D I emailed Switcheasy, inquiring about shipping to Philippines. They replied FAST and had 2-3 more email exchanges.
So, I ordered via Paypal immediately, emailed them to inform them that I placed my order and ask when it will be shipped. They didn't reply.
The next day, emailed them if my order has been shipped, still no reply.
For 5 days, no replies.
It been more than a week, since I ordered, no emails confirming if my order was shipped or even reply to any of my emails.
I wonder if you have received your Switcheasy order and if they have been replying to your inquiries.

I got my new Nano yesterday and she is GORGEOUS! She's supermodel thin, shiny, and beautiful. I agree that the pictures do not do her justice. I love the size. It's so light I kept thinking I'd lost her when she was in my pocket. The screen resolution is simply put: AMAZING. She lowered the self esteem of my husband's video iPod.
It was a difficult decision between her and a 160 classic. Some rancid piece of poo did a smash and grab on my car last week and all "it" took was my video iPod (GeekPod). Last weekend my Nano (NikePod) died a slow and painful death. So in one week I was out two iPods. Since I am still in self flagellation mode for leaving GeekPod in the car in view this SINGLE time, I decided that I didn't deserve to replace him even though I use him every single day (to and from work, and play music for my students at work all day...so at least he was put to extensive use). I was able to run with the NikePod, but no screen so getting the Nike+ to work was frustration--go into a quiet place, count the number of clicks, hope that I'd hear the "Please walk around the activate your sensor" voice, and then listen to whatever was on him from A-Z.
I'm very pleased I went with the Nano. Yes, I still want a video classic, and once my sentence is up (I charged myself with extreme carelessness in the second degree) I will replace Geekpod. I'm still angry with myself because I never EVER (except once) EVER (except this one time) leave my iPod in view in the car (except this single time). GRRRR!
Now I must name her...she deserves a classy iName.

Hi Pnx & verukaward,
I have not received any e-mails from SwitchEasy confirming whether or not they have shipped my case. Just as the two of you, my PayPal account has already been charged for the cost of the case.
I am not too worried however, as I am under the impression that SwitchEasy is a reputable company. They have been making cases in the iPod space for awhile. With lots of satisfied customers. Let's wait a few more days. If there is nothing then we should email iLounge. I am sure they wouldn't mind putting a fire under SwitchEasy.
I'm an idiot. I just got a Switcheasy Black Biscuit.
I cannot open the case to insert my Nano.
Can someone tell me how?
Thanks

So I bought the iPod nano last night. If you see my first posts, you would see that I hated the nano, but I am probably going to use this more than my classic. It is so small yet it does so much, I love it. I put up all my songs, 13 videos and 1 movie, plus 5 or 6 home videos. Yes, it will not hold all my videos, but I can use my classic for that. Right now, the nano is great for an "On the Go" ipod, and if it got a capacity boost, it could render the Classic useless.

Just to refresh everyone's memory:
"It looks like those iPod ripoffs, thats why it looks un-apple.
However, most people who want an iPod do not want a tiny fat thing, and will buy the Classic."
Glad to see that you have come around gtompkins48. And also that you are willing to admit it! Cool.
I and my wife love our 8 GB 3G Nanos (mine black, hers green). And we can honestly say that they are the best iPods that we have ever owned.
Just for reference we have the 4GB 2G Minis, the 1GB 2G Shuffles, and the 30 GB 5G iPod Videos. All are going on eBay as a result of our new acquisitions. The new Nano rocks.

just cant figure out how to upload my own videos on to it??
could someone quickly explain or show me a link?

Well, for a start, the files will need to be .mp4 and all you do is drag them into your itunes video folder.

So I finally got a decent nano... the first had a scratch on the screen, the second had the screen tilt...both silver...so i exhausted their silver supply lol. got a black one instead and so far i am impressed. i was sold once i actually used one (as people have said, pics don't do it justice), and watching video on it isn't half as bad as i thought it would be.
the last ipod i owned was a 30gb photo, and for me...this is far better (aside from the reduction in storage, but i didn't get anywhere near capacity on the Photo) - exactly what i've been looking for :)
being very careful with it though until the case arrives!

also i have subscribed to podcasts and am also having problems with loading them onto the nano, its like as if it doesnt want ot sync with it..... weird!
can anyone shed some light on that?
I don't know what you're doing wrong(Which is why i never replied).
Do you have the iPod set to manual update, or automatic? And if it's automatic, is it already nearly-full of music, so there's only room for one video?
It's the only thing i can think of. Look at the memory status bar when you attach your Nano to the docking cable, and see if you have plenty of space for another video. If you do, i have no idea what's wrong...

I think it's cool, but it is to big to run with and to work out in. It is light, but the ipod is also to wide. I like the fact that it has video, but they need to compact the width and length like creative zen does. The new zen isn't as skinny, but I think it packs more than the iPod with a bigger screen.
I run and work out with mine, and have not noticed that it is excessively large...

Like what most of you said, the 3rd generation Nano is just so small yet so powerful and packed with features similar to the iPod Classic minus the storage space. However, the advantage of the Nano is that it uses flash memory compared to the hard disk memory in the Classic which means the Classic isn't built for a lot of movement with it or else it might be bad for the hard disk. The 3rd generation iPod Nano (bought about a week ago) is my first portable music player from Apple, been using Creative and other brands and what I can say is nothing can compare to what Apple has to offer. I am 100% satisfied with it ! :D

The ipod looks big until you see it. it is about as big as a credit card.
Close.
It's about the same width as a credit card(If the card is stood vertically), but about 1.5cm shorter in height:

Hey guys/girls, I wonder if you all feel the same as me but I actually find it quite troublesome to keep unplugging and plugging in the earphones whenever I need to charge or sync the iPod because the cable has this button thing for you to press to release the lock before you pull the cable, when the earphones are plugged in you can't press both of the button.

I sympathize...I use an earphone port extender and want to never disconnect it in order to 'save' the actual port on the nano. Anyway, I use this crude technique:
Hold nano in left hand with palm over screen and left thumb pressing on button farthest from earphone. Then come up from underneath on right side with small flat-blade screwdriver between headphone and port connector. Don't pry with it, just move it straight against the button, and off comes the connector. :-)
You could put the pod down flat on a table and come down from the top, but I had visions of slipping and hitting the screen... :-(
I use a docking cradle, so i always have my headphones unplugged before charging anyway...

Well I fear that the earphones port will become loose or will have some problems in the future if we plug and unplug it most of the time when it is due for charging or syncing.
Trust me when i say that port will not come loose...

To have better video capability, Apple should make the click wheel on the side. The body won't be as wide and will have room for a bigger screen. They should also offer a 16 GB version for more memory.

Or, Envy body and button, Mystique back and click wheel.
why would you wait 5 years if you want a new mp3 player. It will probably last less. If you need one, buy one now!!!

sorry for so much post in a row, I'm just quoting people.
I don't need to do that really. I have small enough fingers to get the outside button out and than press on the top of the right button to have it slide out. I can't really fit my whole finger between the earbuds and the charging cable.

They don't want it to clash with iPod Touch 16GB, well the iPod Touch 32GB should be under development and when it comes out, I won't be surprised if the Nano will have a 16GB capacity.

Dont be pessimist and skeptical , i do congratulate mac to what they´ve come up with , honestly is much useful , better that the second generation , and the screen is enough wide to nicely watch any kind of video you want to.
i've compared to my fisrt one gen ipod and the outcome was much better.... well of course its just my opinion , i also gotta add that the seond generation didnt convince me enough to buy , perhaps the new color they used for the 2nd gen. was too colorful to me..!! anyways
besides , i hate big mp3 players as ipod classic , i like handful mp3 player to put in and carry in a simple pocket. well i got the new one and it was what i expected so i'm fine with it...
a aquestion : how can i get my videos after converting them for ipod with audio ? ithey just come with the image , but no damn video....
i'll damn well send a feedback to apple complaining about it!!
hope to get a responds to solve it!! i urge solving it

WHAT IS TRUE IS THE FACT THAT ALWAYS ANY ELECTRONIC GETS BETTER AND BETTER BY THE TIME ,JUST AS THE IPOD NANO , IT WAS DAMN PREDCITABLE THAT THE NANO WOULD COME OUT WITH VIDEO SOMEDAY!! THERE IT IS!!!

Make sure all your song information is the same, for example the artist, album artist and album name must all be exactly the same. That includes capital letters too. If an album is called "Test" and you have another file that the album is "test", it is detected as different album although they both are Test.

It has a few minor issues but it is light enough for me to carry in my purse or in my pocket. The screen is sharp and easy to use. Coverflow is great and I love having my favorite photos with me. I downloaded an article on converting videos and will get the videos I took with my camera set up to sync. I love the fact that it is lightweight and small. My first iPod was 1st generation and I am a senior so I guess that messes up some of the theories about who could possibly love this iPod. I hated the looks of the older Nanos and would never have bought one. They would fall out of my shirt pocket and looked as if they might bend and break.:)

I bought one of these Ipod Nano's out of curiosity a couple days ago. I already have a NW-A818 Walkman which I like alot but I see forums and reviews saying that this Ipod Nano is great and "everyone" has one, so I decided to buy the 4gb version and see for myself. I was hoping it would be the same or better than my Walkman but I was very disappointed. Although I like the click wheel and the coverflow, the sound quality is quite low. I have a pair of Shure E3c which I got for my Walkman. The nano didn't seem to make good use of these expensive 'phones and when I put the EQ on hip hop or r&b or something that has bass, instead of improving the sound, it made it worst by the distorted bass although the Shure's did help minimise this as the distortion is worst on my MDR-EX85LP 'phones. The non-customizable EQ is also a let down. I also noticed the screen is brighter compared to my Walkman which is a good thing. Also another bad thing about the nano was that the battery doesn't last very long. My Walkman can last my up to 5 days while this Ipod could barely last 2. The shape of the Ipod isn't very friendly as it is kind of wide so for small hands, it's not as easy to use. To my suprise, I have also noticed that the screen is tilted at an angle slightly, although it isn't such a big problem, it suggests bad build quality. Anyway, although it's a great player, it just doesn't suit me so I'm going to give this to my son as a christmas present.

OK so I really like my nano. It is a great little thing.
One thing I find amazing is the Monitor. I recently learned that the 3rd gen nano has a video screen which is the HIGHEST resolution screen that Apple has ever created. Is this true. It is a good screen.
BTW my screen is tilted it is off by about 1/2 - 1 degree. I did not notice it until I put my nano into a YOTANK aluminum case. It doesn't bother me.
I own both a NANO and an 80 gig classic. I use my nano 90% of the time go figure.
Does anybody know when Apple will come out with a 16 gig nano?
I remember when 20 gigs was a hell of a lot of storage space. My creative jukebox has a capacity of 20 gig. I can't imagine a nano with a 16 gig flash memory. That would be amazing.
I would trade my 8 gig nano in for a 16 gig nano at the drop of a hat.
There are those who have been nano haters. They seem to be in love with their 2nd gen nanos. IMHO that is cool but I have a feeling that they are just secretly mad at them selves that they don't own the latest and greatest 3rd gen NANO. lets face it the 3rd gen units are almost exactly like the larger "classic" series except they are smaller and have lower capacity. Like I said 90% of the time I use the nano.
My other question for you guys besides the one asked earlier is do you actually use the stock ear phones? I wish Apple would send out a higher quality headphone with these amazing little machines.

i got mine yesterday. this is actually my 4th ipod.
the first one, a 1G 2gb nano, i stepped on(don't ask)and the screen broke
the second one, a 2G 6gb mini off ebay, hard drive failed
the third one, i sent back the mini, and got a 4G 40gb black and white ipod. hard drive broke last week
none of them had any battery life WHATSOEVER, and i am getting used to this. my 40gb only lasted like 2 hours, so i conserved it whenever i could.
well, i loaded all of my songs/videos on this, and have been using it all day. about 8 hours now. guess how much the battery went down? about 3 pixels. its AMAZING
get a case, you won't regret it

Sorry--I need help!
My first iPod, which I want to use with iTunes on my MacBook, 8G video Nano.
It only wants to sync Podcasts easily.
Music is a hassle, but it will do.
It will NOT sync ANY videos--even music videos or TV shows bought off iTunes!!
The message I get is "Can't sync this video becuase your Nano can't play it" or something similar.
Need help fast, if I can't resolve it I can still return it for a NON-video iPod, which is all I need anyway.
Thanks!
Go into your iTunes video folder. Right click(Or the mac equivalent) on a video, and you should get a "Convert Video for iPod" legend in the pop-up.
Do that and your video should work.

Nope, not working--I'm thinking this is an itunes problem more than a Nano problem. When I do the above, I just get an error message, for both a music video and a tv show, both purchased on iTunes as tests. Looks like I'm gonna have to call.....AAAAAGGGGH.
Hmmm. That IS strange...
I have no answers, i'm afraid.
Sorry.

Thanks for trying--some good news--I just reinstalled Qtime again, and at least now I can watch the purchased videos on the Macbook in itunes. Nano is still not accepting them despite checking the "convert for ipod" as you suggested, I still get the message that the Nano can't play them. Odd indeed. Looks like my poor hubby, who bought this as my gift, will be heading back to the Apple store tomorrow.
I too had an issue with QT over the festive season. My iTunes stopped working altogether. It kept saying there was "An error in my audio setup", and i traced that to QT and re-installed it.
I am perplexed about what this could be.
Have you tried restoring your iPod, or upgrading to the latest firmware?
Worth a try at least.

Loving my nano personally, it has replaced my old mini and works like a charm. Can fit my fav music on it, music video's, play a game of hold 'em when I'm bored and has a 24hr battery life. An excellent buy in my opinion.

Just wanted to thank BAR for the help. I ended up spending 3 hours on the phoen with appelcare through 5 tiers of customer service reps. Turns out it was an iTunes problem, whcih I still don't understand--something to do with the order in which I upgraded iTunes, downloaded iSquint, Restored, etc. It's working fine now, as long as I manage everything "manually" thru iTunes on my macbook. Now I just gotta buy a nice screen shield and nifty carrying case and I'm set.
Well i honestly don't know what i said that helped, but i'm glad your Pod is working again!
As for a case, i bought the cheapest one i could find (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Crystal-Clear-Case-Cover-for-Apple-Ipod-Nano-3rd-3G-Gen_W0QQitemZ130187300240QQihZ003QQcategoryZ56170Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). It works great, has a little hinge mechanism making it easy to remove, is sooo cheap(I bought three of them just in case...), and protects my Nano really well. For me it has to be clear plastic(I like to show off the Product Red Nano), and because of the transmitter i use in the car, i always need to make slight alterations with my dremel, so the plastic lends itself to that more than a silicone case would.

Seriously - you go through that every time you remove the port connector?

I hope this is the correct place to ask, but I'm really curious about the new iPod nano. In the past, I've had an iPod mini and iPod shuffle, the mini stopped working after a year, the hard drive in it was corrupted or something.. and as for the shuffle, it just doesn't fit enough songs on for me. So, I want to buy the new nano, but I'm wondering if it's really worth it?
It looks nice and all, but does it really live up to the hype?
I have never used an Mp3 player other than an Apple product, so i am probably biased, but the Nano i use is the best music/video player i have ever owned.
It really does everything the old one did but so much better. And you can even turn off cover flow, which is an app i despise with a vengeance(But everyone else seems to love).
If you buy one, you are unlikely to be dissapointed, unless you have a lot more than 8gb of music that you regularly listen to.

thanks for the reply, Bar. I have a few more questions..
- Can you have your own wallpaper on the menu?
- What's it like watching movies on there?
- Is the battery life good?
- Overall, is it worth £129.99 (I plan to get the 8GB one)
thanks for the reply, Bar. I have a few more questions..

First of all, it's no problem to answer your questions. I love Nanos so much, i like to sing their praises every chance i can get.
1- I don't think you can set the wallpaper. It's usually a random image from whatever menu item you have selected at that point(If you have selected music, it may be a random piece of album art, constantly changing every five seconds or so, if you have selected the movies menu, it will be a still from one of the movies/music vids you have on the Nano, etc). I could be wrong about this though. I have certainly never tried to make a photo the wallpaper. Trust me when i say that the way it's set up, you will not want to change it.
2- The screen is allegedly the most pixels per sq inch of any iPod up till now, and even though the screen is small, it's a brilliant size for watching anything i have.
3- I hear the battery life is somewhere like 6 hours for movies and close to 24 hours for music. I am seldom away from power for so long(I tend to use my Nano as an audio soucre in my car, and i have it plugged into the charger all the time). If there was an issue you had with running low, you can always buy one of those products which can charge the Nano(Or at least power it), on the go(There are a great many products on Ebay which take AA or AAA batteries and plug right into the socket on the bottom.
4- It'd definitely worth the £129 in my book, but i tend to get mine from the US(For a couple of reasons). It only costs $200 in the US(£100), and although the postage adds a little to the price, the unit will come without the audio restrictions we face in the UK versions. I usually get a friend of mine to order mine for me, get them mailed to him(The Apple Store usually ships free of charge when you buy direct), and then he sends them to me.
I always get mine engraved too. It makes it more personal, but is obviously not for you if you intend to resell at any point.
These are only my own opinions, of course. I am sure there will be others along shortly.
If you have any other queries, post them here.

I've used a lot of MP3 players of all kinds of makes. To be honest, the user interface and the form factor are well an truly ahead of everyone else.
people say the sound isn't that good from an iPod, but personally, i don;t have bionic ears so can't tel the difference between one good MP3 player and another at the same bitrate.
Short answer - my new 3G 8gb Nano is well and truly worth the hype. I love it. :D

Ok. Plug in your iPod to your computer and start iTunes. When your iPod populates, and you see the graphic of the iPod summary (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g19/All_the_good_usernames_are_taken/Misc%20junk/nanohomescreen1.jpg), click MUSIC next to the summary tab, and at the bottom, it will ask if you want to include album art on your iPod (http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g19/All_the_good_usernames_are_taken/Misc%20junk/nanohomescreen2.jpg). Select that.

Don't you get to choose what album art goes where? Because, I only have one album art on one of my albums, and I got like 8 albums on there D:
btw, can you delete pictures on it too? I accidently synced them all on there and I don't want all of them on there.
I think it's an all or nothing type of thing...
Maybe you had better post that in the iTunes forum...

Syncing photos is exactly as Bar said - all or nothing.
the way to get a selection is to create a folder on your computer with ipod photos on it (or somesuch) and just sync that folder to your iPod. You can't delete photos from the iPod as such, you just need to choose which folder(s) get put on there and any that you currently have will be removed and replaced.

What is the thinnest cover? I want to retain the form factor but want to protect it also.
I've just ordered an 8GB in pink - it should arrive on Tuesday. Can't wait! I've been lusting after one for ages. I've had 4th and 5th gen full size iPods, but I've just started a new job and am required to carry a huge PDA, I have my normal phone, a full size iPod was just too much to carry around. I'm not allowed to store personal stuff on the PDA, and my personal phone is dreadful as a media player (can't upgrade for 6 months), so I decided to downsize the iPod. Will be useful to have the smaller size for the gym too.
Yay I've joined the nano fatty club!

I just got an iPod last week for my birthday... I opened it up a week early though. :o It's a 4GB fatty Nano video. Not like I'm going to use video, I only have 940 MB left... though I would have liked a blue Nano.
It might just be my headphones' bass biases, but my iPod distorts bass at ONE volume, which is the volume level I usually listen at at home. I'm scared to see what it does at regular bus volume, which is like 20-40 clicks: I haven't taken it out because of fingerprint paranoia inherited from glasses and clumsiness, but I just got an inCase thing. ...Would've preferred a Duo, but it's a present, so I'll keep it until it breaks or when I have the money.
...No offense, but I would truthfully have preferred a Zune at the pricepoint if I had the choice if the sound isn't as boomy as the iPod's.

I picked up a 3G 4gig Nano at a big box store recently and was very surprised. I was never an audiophile – I’m 44 years old and I tended to listen to sports or newstalk radio. I filled the Ipod quickly with tunes and have become addicted to podcasts and items from ITunesU. If the video is such a problem with people, why are there sooooooooooooooo many posts about album art? I think the video is fine. In fact, I have become quite used to viewing audio podcasts.

I have the 4GB version, and it's no wonder they priced it at the price of the old 2GB version - I'm getting robbed .5GB. I knew it wasn't 4GB because of the whole decimal vs binary thing, but according to iLounge's FAQ I should have 4GB*0.9313225 = 3.73GB of free space. However, even when I took out games, album art, etc, I can only store less than 3.5GB of music.

It would be cool if Apple focused more on making the Nano more durable and servicable but looks like they went the opposite direction with the G3. More components than ever before are held in place solely by adhesive making the unit a nightmare to repair and most adhesives chemically degrade so guessing some units will literally fall apart internally over time ... but after the warranty expires to be sure. Battery continues to be soldered and there's still no FM receiver or Pan/Scroll features on the video making viewing photos on the tiny display screen next to worthless. I don't care if the Nano is smaller than comparable MP3 players, double its size to add the fore mentioned features and allow components to be replaced without soldering/adhesive. I was given a G1 years ago as a gift that never had a problem until it was lost/stolen. Then I bought a G2 that worked well for 18 months until the headphone jack wore out. Would have thought replacement would be simple but Apple had attached the click wheel to the jack making repair a major chore not to mention more expensive. Now I'm on G3, or will be in a couple days when it arrives. Had I researched how G3 is built before buying I would have spent more time looking at alternatives. I read the G3 has a case that's sensitive to scratching like the G1. Another step backwards. I don't have anything against Apple but is seems lately they're been putting too much money into Marketing and not enough into Development.

And then you'd have a flash-based Classic with a lot less memory...why would they bother?
yaesumofo
07-04-2008, 11:16 PM
The current version of the nano has the best screen Apple has put into ANY IPOD.
I have a classic as well as an 8 gig gen 3 nano. Which one do you think gets used? I will tell you. The NANO. Why? Because it has every feature the classic has in a much smaller package. The only thing I miss is the storage. I am quite sure that within a few years we will see NANO sized Ipods with 80 + gigs of memory.
I really can't imagine Apple producing a NEW version of the Ipod with old spinning disk drives ever again. It just doesn't make any sense.
In terms of the ability to play7 video on the Nano well if you don't like the quality of the image then don't use the Nano to watch videos. Use your lap top instead.
When at home I plus my Ipod into an OLD (10 plus years old) Tube based headphone amp. the results are very good. All of the audio on my Ipod is ripped at the highest quality possible.
Anyway you look at it even when listening to Cd's we are listening to music which is less than perfect. Ipods don't help the cause of great sounding music one bit. Soon we will be seeing Blue ray Audio disks which are truly HIGH RESOLUTION AUDIO with sample rates of 96k and 192K these rates allow for much more harmonic content. The music we listen to will benefit as a result.
The problem with this is that once you start listening to High Resolution music that listening to an Ipod will sound terrible by comparison... So Apple will have to create Ipods with MUCH LARGER storage areas on the order of a TB. and they will have to create loss less HI resolution codecs which reproduce all of the now missing harmonic content.
Technology marches on.

Bought the 8GB Silver Nano (video).
Importantly, since this is an "audio, music" accessory, I am dismayed the sound is not as good as the first generation Mini.
Sound is a bit muddy and clarity is lacking. Vocals are not as distinct with T, S and D consonants as with the Mini. EQ preset offerings are the same with each model, but the frequencies have been changed between the 2, lending a different sonic experience between the two. The Nano is weaker.
The same set of files were listened through the same set of headphones, Sennheiser (not those awful Apple earbuds), and at the same EQ preset or without the EQ preset. The Nano, for my ears, cannot be listened to with EQ setting in "flat" or off mode, or sound is muddy (high hats and cymbals are not as sharp or snappy and tambourines are not distinct). Again, the remaining presets sound different from the Mini presets.
However, I do like the video capability and the fact files transfer much faster than the Mini as well as Cover flow (you can visually scroll through cover art to get to songs ) and the other little bells and whistles such as syncing Outook messages, contacts, and podcasts. I do like the fact I can download and watch free video podcasts such as Bill Moyer, PBS stuff, etc.
I am using those "sticky" cut out LCD protector shields to shield the screen from scratches and they work fine.
I guess I will have to adjust but am not 100%+ satisfied as I was with the Mini. Newer is not always better in some aspects.:shake:

Hi all,
New to this forum so please go easy on me ! Not sure if anyone can help on this but I'm after a Nano to use in the car and for running but am aware that there's the 4G getting announced on the 9th.
My question, what happens to all the 3G Nanos once the new ones are out ? Obviously stocks are run down to an extent but there must be a load left over somewhere. I'm not bothered about the latest version so was hoping to pick up a bargain 3G. Would rather buy new, don't like getting 2nd hand electrical goods (based in UK by the way).
Thanks in advance !

This is code for, "we're coming out with new iPods, if you want to have any of the old ones, this is your last chance to order but don't order too many because there is no discount for you or the customer".
Ergo, most retailers are either out at this point or darn close (there was a single silver nano and a handful of 8GB touches at my local Wal-Mart last Thursday when I was shopping). Even after next Tuesday, any remaining stock will still be full priced or returned to Apple, there are no iPod clearance sales. On the other hand, if you wait about two months, Apple will have killer prices on refurbs of the 3G nanos complete with full warranty, so if you want the 3G, wait a month or so after the 4G goes on sale.

Personally the only thing the 3G Nano ever really needed was a memory upgrade.
Mine's been excellent.
The sound is good (to my ears) and the screen is excellent for watching video when you can't access a larger screen/TV.
I love the shape, the size, the feel and the features. I'd just like it to be about 32GB.
Geez Louise!
I didn't even know the new Nano was OUT!!!
I prefer my Fatty(Which is working fine), but i was weak and have just ordered an engraved Product Red.
In essence, this Product Red will replace my 2G Nano Skinny which was stolen when i was on holiday in New Jersey last year.
I even got the same engraving.
WOOOHOOOOO! A new Nano!!!
:D
I like the shaking thing.
And the accellerometer.
And i have all my day to day stuff on my Touch 16GB, so this Nano will be PREFECT!

Of a particularly humorous nature to me is to go back and read all the "That CAN'T be the new Nano, because...." types of posts when the pics were leaked a couple of weeks back...

I popped into the London Oxford street store today to check out the new nano, and I have to say, it is not a patch on the 3rd gen looks-wise. The curved screen is VERY off-putting, and it does, as I suspected, look more like a cheap Nano copy than anything else.. I would go so far as to say it is easily the ugliest of the Nano family......
Of course - it's all a matter of opinion.

I thought a similar thing when i first saw it(And i also felt the same when i first saw the 3G nano!).
Mine is still showing as not yet shipped, but when i get it, i'll post pics.
I am looking forward to finding out all the cool additions to it from the 3G.
You can read and read about the new extras, but until you have it in your hand, you don't know what's going to be a boon and what's going to be a backwards step!

looks really nice, but im still ok with my 4G nano video

I particularly said that can't be the new Nano because I thought they meant the literal screen was curved.. I didn't know it was just a curved glass shield over the actual flat screen.
It's very nice

Man the 4th gen is the best nano to ever come out in my opinion. I bought one and I love it. This is the first time I've enjoyed another iPod as much as I enjoyed my 5th gen.
- Sound quality is better and not so flat like the 2nd/1st gen was
- Large font is a nice addition
- the device is light, in fact so light I can't even tell its in my pocket.
- hommage to the 2nd gen which was the best design IMO.
- No major bugs this year that I can find other than the album art is mismatched when you skip ahead fast and the song titles are sometimes wrong [pushing back fixes it]..which is a god send compared to last years worthless bug ridden models.

Why did Apple make an update for the Nano 4G almost straight away?

because they always do - they release a buggy product quickly then proceed to fix it as the bugs appear in the marketplace - Itunes 8 is the same.

I purchased a yellow iPod Nano 8GB. When I got home a little while ago I opened the box and found I received an empty box but the packing slip was still inside. :) I called Apple customer service and they are sending another one out immediately and said for me to give the FedEx guy the empty box in return. They are going to flag it so it will be traced when someone tries registering it.

That sucks.
Great that they will be sending you another one, though.
I hope they snag the scum that stole your first one.
The grim reality is that it will be sold cheaply, and the "new owner" will not be the one that stole it...
Let us know what happens.

I was thinking the same thing.

I was thinking the same thing.
It really sucks.
The strange thing is that, what with each iPod having a UNIQUE serial number, it is totally possible for Apple to have a system where a stolen iPod cannot be used again.
But as long as you buy a new iPod after the old one gets half-inched, they don't seem to care.
I too know the pain and heartache of having an iPod stolen...
:o
I wasn't lucky enough to have it replaced for free. I had to buy my new one.

Well, I got my Nano yesterday and I love it. The case I got didn't work out to well so I'm looking for another clear case. Still playing around with it but this one will get a lot of use.
Great news!
There are LOADS of cheap cases available now. You'll not have any bother finding one.

Yea, I'm waiting for Belkin to get more of the clear cases back in stock. I had one before for my 2nd gen Nano and really like the case. It covers the whole iPod except the ports. Didn't like that Shade case I purchased.
Apple needs to add crossfade to all iPods and not just this Nano. Listening to music on it sounds fantastic.

I was thinking about getting a clear case myself, but then I thought "what do I do when the CASE itself gets scratched? specially around the screen", so that made me go back to my original choice of a silicone one and Ill be getting an iSkin soon.

I got a 4G Nano for Christmas and I love it. :) It's the first Nano I've owned, so it's taking a bit of "getting used to" but there are definitely a lot of nice features. The large font is a huge plus, it's light, and the sound quality is awesome.
Only downside is the screen is hard to read without the backlight, more so than the other iPods.

Never really thought much about mp3 players or iPods......until......about 6 months ago I won an iPod Shuffle in a drawing held in the I.T. department where I work. Works great for work, as I run the data center on the night shift, I could just clip it to my belt and listen to music. As I'm married, I let my wife check it out, and, well, you can guess the rest....I had to buy one for her. As with all addictions, I found myself wanting something better, and spent a couple of months checking the various reviews on-line of the different mp3 + video players out there. Lots of different and good ones, but they all had one thing in common...."and, they're just as good as the Apple"....not good enough, so last weekend I purchased 2 (can't leave the wife out) iPod Nano 4G 8gb. I decided on the Nano simply because of the Apple iPods, I personally considered it the best value for the money. The only thing I was concerned with when I made the purchase?....how good can the video be on a 2" screen?.....watching movies?....better get the microscope out....so to check it out I subscribed to a few video podcasts......Anderson Cooper 360, NBC Nightly News, etc....you get the picture. MAN.....was I wrong....the video picture resolution is so absolutely crisp and well defined, that the size of the screen is moot. The addiction is satiated for now......but I got a BAD feeling.......

Everytime I see a shuffle, (in real life), I'm still like 'awww they are so cute!' honestly, if the Nano 4G just wasn't so irressitible, I would have bought a shuffle straight away, cause its so small, and cute, and just so awesome^^

Hello all. I'm new.
I'm hoping you can help me with an issue I am having with my brand new nano. When I am listening to it, without touching/bumping/moving it at all, it will simply turn itself off. It starts again by pressing any button, but I am very distressed that such a new and expensive device is presenting problems so soon. This has happened about 5 times this week alone!
This is my first iPOD, and besides this, it has been amazing. But, uh, what do I do now? What will they do at the Apple store?
Also, the ONLY thing that I can think of that may possibly be contributing to the problem is that I dropped it one morning and after that, it began acting up. But it wasn't a very hard crash at all...
Thanks.
^^ I posted this on the main page as well, because i'm not sure if people would be more responsive here.
Just pop it back to the store you bought it at, and they will replace it.
Best to not mention the drop, though, as they could easily use it as an excuse to NOT change it for you...
Good luck.

I got my new 8GB iPod nano last Friday.
What I like about the nano are the sound it's loud even in minimal, the album cover which is new and it's lighter. Plus, the cover flow option like in iTunes.
I don't regret getting this cute iPod and lovin' it.
I've been using iPods from pre-click wheel models. I've been waiting for a nano with a mic and an FM tuner. It has seemed absurd to me that you have this great little audio storage device but you can't record with it. I didn't care for an FM tuner originally till I started using a competing product and found to my surprise that I liked it a lot.
The only thing not granted on my wish list is the ability to record off the FM. I know this is Apple protecting iTunes sales, but there's a LOT on the radio that is not on iTunes. Many, many times I've been listening to a program in the car and missed it after I arrived at my destination. 15 minutes is not enough. Recording FM allows you to time-shift, like an audio TIVO. I would have loved that.

Just purchased the ipod nano 5th gen today. First thing i did was test out the video and lo and behold, i discovered that in low-light conditions, the nano actually outperforms the iphone 3GS.
Videos captured in low-light conditions on the nano were considerably smoother and appeared to have lower noise. Videos from the iphone 3GS were choppier and also took a longer time to readjust exposure.
Very surprising as i thought that the 3GS would have a far superior camera.

Just got my Nano 5G today and I am IN LOVE (and I haven't even touched it :p). I have a rule that I don't touch electronics with screens without a case, so I have to wait 4-7 days to touch it (and until my Nike Plus Kit gets here, I already got my $60 Nikes). But the form factor is just perfect. I am a Facebook addict so I can't wait until I start taking videos with it. I love and will use EVERY feature it has. The pedometer was just pure brilliance.
I don't want to be too much of a naysayer, but there just isn't enough of an update this year.
I have bought nearly EVERY new iPod over the last five years, but i just can't think of a reason to replace my 16GB 4G Nano with the new one.
This is the FIRST TIME i haven't had a new Nano ordered as soon as i could...

Really? The 5G nano is probably one of the biggest jumps in the Nano family. Other iterations were largely cosmetic or brought things to the table that the larger iPods already had.
Granted, from a music perspective the 5G iPod isn't that dramatic of a change, but neither were most previous iterations -- in fact some were limited primarily to cosmetic/design changes. The 5G does offer support for Genius Mixes, which is actually a pretty nice feature for mixing up and discovering music if you have a large library.

I know.
I am sure you shot me down in flames this time last year for saying how great the 4G Nano was, lol!
But i can't help but feel underwhelmed.
I'll wait till they bump the capacity before i bother shelling out for one.

I'm pretty with my upgrade from iPod mini (!!) to iPod nano video. I wouldn't do the upgrade if hadn't my battery kept on dying after 2 hours of play after fully charging it.
downside: The video lens is situated in an awkward place, i kept on covering it up accidentaly. :\
I would have upgraded to ipod classic 120GB, but i think it's just too heavy for trvael or jogging. but it's just me. :)
my guess is that in the future, Apple would be coming out with integrated camera with flash and it would surely trump the ipod nano video (surprise).
