I just picked up a 2G Touch, 32GB. Apart from the screen being really easy to smudge, im pretty chuffed so far. Just syncing to put on some playlists, videos, movies and applications. Not that I added much to the discussion in here!
Oh, it went straight into a incase protective cover that stops that back getting scuffed up, I know the screens are scratch resistant but how much so? Should I pick up and invisible shield thingy for it?

I'm lovin' my new Touch 2G - the games are what sold me!!! That, and the video podcast support, are spectacular.

I sent my 1st Gen Touch in for repair and Apple is sending it back stating there is nothing wrong with it. Honestly, it's not usable with the amount of background hiss on the Ultimate Ears. Makes a good paperweight I guess. maybe put some pictures on it.

Hello, I've broken my ipod video 30GB! I've been wondering about buying a new one, but i'm still hesitating between an ipod touch and an ipod nano!
It would be nice if you could give me an advice on which one would you buy and why?
Or if you could tell me about problems you had with you're ipod touch?

STAY AWAY from the iTouch !!
It seems that Apple has to issue at least 3 or 4 generations of a product before they get it right.
I had the 1st Gen iTouch, and generally liked it but the 2nd Gen seemed "improved" so I sold my 1st Gen and got a 32GB iTouch.
Well, guess what? Every one of my accessories where I can dock this thing do not charge it any longer.
So I investigate and come to find out that this is true of the 2nd Gen iTouch, with a majority of 3rd party accessories, many of them high-end products.
Want to play your tunes through your stereo system where you added an iPod/iTouch cradle?? Forget it. doesn't work.
Want to play iTouch on your portable speaker system that you paid $200 for??? won't charge the battery.
Oh yes, you can always do the USB battery recharge, but a big part of having these other accessories is that it charges your unit while it's docked there.
No more !!
I also have a clock-radio/speaker device that I used to keep my 1st Gen iTouch plugged into, on the top of it, so it could wake me in the mornings to the tunes on my iTouch. Paid $140 for it, but I may as well get rid of it now, because certainly I can't have my iTouch plugged into it all night, turned on, without delivering any power to the iTouch unless I want to NOT wake up and also find a dead iTouch battery there.
What a stupid move on Apples' part, not to make the 2nd Gen backwards-compatible with charging interfaces that used to work on the 1st Gen unit.
So buy a Nano, since those kinds of stupid mistakes have mostly been worked out by now.
Or better yet, abandon Apple (heaven forbid!!) for another brand of products that is not so frustrating for the user.

Nice one genius suggesting the nano over the iPod Touch for incompatibilities. The 4G Nano isn't backwards compatible either the only one thats backwards compatible [still supports firewire charging].
Takes apple 3 or 4 generations to get a product right? What are you talking about? Don't come here spewing this non-sense.
If you think iPods are frustrating for the user you clearly haven't used any alternative products, the only one that even comes close is the Zune the other ones suck.

Yeah, it sucks for those people with accessories that Apple abandoned firewire charging. But you make it sound like they accidently screwed things up. They purposely screwed things up. Feel better yet? :-)
Actually, I'm a bit ####ed that plugging my iPhone into my universal dock gives a message that it isn't compatible. Not quite sure how it isn't compatible, but I'm bloody sick of it saying it isn't, and wish it would shut up.

To be fair, the discontinuing of FireWire support for charging is only going to be a problem for long-time iPod users who have not purchased recent accessories, or for certain recent car kit manufacturers who have blatantly ignored Apple's specs.
Apple has been telling their Made-for-iPod partners for almost two years now to not use FireWire charging in new accessories and to discontinue any old ones that still do. This is probably a big part of the reason why Apple dropped their own iPod Hi-Fi.
That having been said, there is NO excuse for Apple to remain quiet on the issue. They should be much more forthcoming to their customers - and for that matter their own retail store employees - as to what is and isn't supported when new iPod models are released.
As for the iPhone incompatibility nag screen, this is entirely based on whether the accessory has an authentication chip inside that indicates it's Works-with-iPhone certified. Most accessories will still work despite this message, although with many speakers you'll get RF interference from the cell phone radio.
Note that you can ignore the nag screen and it will go away by itself.

i think it is nice that we have an option to have all the iphone functionality but without the cell phone for people like me that already have a cell phone (a treo that i'm addicted to). so i think is is good move for apple and a good product.

Has anyone noticed audio glitches with the 2.2 firmware on the iPod touch? I thought it was because I was listening to a live CD, but then I compared the ipod with the actual CD, and there was no glitch. Then I thought it was a problem with the Apple Lossless encoding, but when I heard a glitch, and then rewound back to where the glitch was it wasn't reproduced the second time... Anyone else with similar problems? Will try turning the iPod off and then on again, shortly.

After letting it reload (sleep+home) there are still the unreproducible audo glitches...
Also, I was reordering home screen icons while paying it, and the iPod totally crashed...

Now testing it with another lossless file... from a different album. I thought I'd left this sort of thing behind on my iPod classic...

I think the reason they do this is to spread the market around. Maybe they do this because everyone doesn't "have" a local Apple store so they sell them at other stores.

I've had my Ipod touch now since Julyish.
I'm actually really pleased with it. I bought it primarly as a PDA with a 2ndary feature of music playback.
This is replacing my existing PocketPC pda of a Dell AXIM X30.
While many might say that the Ipod touch really isn't a PDA per say and a media player, I argue that. It has all the base features of a PDA, except it has one that none else have managed. it looks ####ing awesome. I don't care what anyone says, Find me another hand held PDA / Media player that is just as small and sleek. it just doesn't exist. it fits in my pocket easy, and now instead of carrying around 3 things (ipod, phone, PDA), i cary two (phone, Touch). I sit in lecture and have full access to web / email that i need. and I've managed to be able to type fast enough on it to take some pretty good notes in classs.
only issues so far:
frequent Safari Crashing while playing music
Coverflow showing incorrect album art.
4 hours to reset the ipod (seriously. 4 hours)
limited battery life

When you want help with a problem, giving more information as to the problem is helpful ;-)
If you have restored, etc, that rules out most "software" issues, it may be hardware which is either a difficult repair for the average person, or difficult/expensive to repair in general, especially when it comes to the backlight.

I was wondering how many people here use a classic HD-based Ipod in addition to a Touch?
haydn
01-31-2009, 10:14 AM
Yep, I use the classic 80 g along with my touch...I'll flip-flop them. Sometimes I'll take the touch to work, sometimes the classic, sometimes both. They're both really good music players. The classic has the capacity; the touch has the 'wow' factor, and great video screen for watching The Simpsons during the commute. I never thought I'd make use of both players, but there ya go.

Actually, to be fair the iPod touch has taken a somewhat divergent approach from the iPhone by adding a few niche features like Nike+ support that are absent from the iPhone.
While the first-generation iPod touch seemed to be a somewhat experimental concept to test the waters, the second-generation iPod touch has become a great solution for those who really don't want a phone with their iPod for whatever reason. Further, when you add in the contractual requirements for the iPhone, the iPod touch is considerably cheaper and offers more capacity.

Yes, Khamroc, I can tell that you're a real discerning & discriminating consumer, and quite likely an expert on this subject. (2 posts on iLounge).
However I can tell you that I wouldn't take an iPhone if you gave it to me free! Many reasons, that I won't go into here.
But I love my 2nd Gen iTouch: it gives me internet access almost everywhere (free) and stores & plays all my music, podcasts and movies in a neat little package. And beyond the initial cost, there's no fees of any kind involved when I stick to loading it with my own music or the millions of free music & videos available on the internet.
If I had gotten the iPhone instead, I'd be paying a MINIMUM of $800 per year now. As it is, I pay only a quarter of that for all my phone needs, and have over $500 a year left to spend on other electronic goodies that I enjoy.

No, there is no concept of activation of unlocking that applies to the iPod touch.... In that sense it works just like any other iPod.
The lockout on the iPhone is to prevent you from using it with carriers other than the one that sold it to you, since the iPhone is subsidized by your local carrier. The real price of an iPhone is considerably higher than what you pay for it via your local cellular phone company (and the same applies to other cell phones as well). Obviously, the iPod touch doesn't have this issue, as you're paying full price for it, and not signing a contract with a cell phone company.
I have a new i-touch and want to transfer my music from my ipod nano onto it.
You'll need to transfer the music from your iPod nano back onto a computer and import it into your iTunes library. See our iPod 201 article, Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-computer/) for more information on how to do this.

OK, I am a newbie. I am looking at getting an ipod touch. I would like something that is easy to use and would like a docking system with a radio for when I am on vacation.
I would like the expert advice out there whether to get a touch or another variation or brand.
I am not interested in an i-phone.
How difficult is it to put movies and music on this thing and what is the cost if you buy them??
bigmutt
03-09-2009, 07:12 PM
I wish someone had given me this advice when I was first starting out with mp3 players.
But now I'm so locked in to iTunes (iPod, iTouch) proprietary system that it's very difficult to back out.
iTouch is a lovely piece of hardware, and I'm on my third one already; same with older iPods, of which I had five.
But the iTunes software REQUIRED to use the iTouch is horrendous !! it's so proprietary and restrictive that you'll be pulling your hair out in no time; at least if you want even the slightest degree of control or customization. You'll need to buy add-on programs to manage your library; you'll need to buy other 3rd party programs just to transfer your music from your iTouch to your new computer, every time you want to change (upgrade?) your laptop or desktop. If you want to keep the same tunes on two different computers (say, your desktop AND your laptop) you'll need 3rd-party syncing software, if you ever want any hope of accomplishing that.
Your computers will lock up with iTunes running; you'll try to close iTunes and it just won't respond until you reboot.
The only good thing about iTunes is that it's got an extensive selection in their store; for instance you can't obtain American Idol songs except through iTunes.
But if you can, at all, stay away from Apple's slick-but-quirky music system, DO IT !!!!!!
I love my SanDisk e250, for instance, and I wish i'd stayed with it. it cost about forty bucks, did everything the ipod does, AND more: for example it has a built-in radio, and you can record & save anything you're listening to on the radio; something the apple products cannot do at ANY price.
well, that's my opinion.
from Rick, a frustrated, unhappy owner of a 2nd Gen iTouch; trapped by the insidious apple monster.

Interesting, if you had such a history with iTunes and other iPods, why on Earth did you ever buy a Touch? And what media management software lets you synchronize between two or more computers?
You talk about the lack of control or customization, but to me that's what iTunes does offer. Want a playlist of 4- or 5-star Classic Rock songs from the 60s that you haven't listened to in the last 2 months? No problem, create a smart playlist and it will update itself (and your iPod) automatically as you use it. What other media management applications let you do things like this?
I realize some Windows users have issues with iTunes, but I'm one of the many who don't and really like the power that it gives me over my music. Sorry to hear of your frustrations, but I thought it would be prudent to let kellyp know that iTunes is not evil, at least not to everyone ;)

Leaving technical issues aside, which of course do occur for some users, I think the problem that most people have with iTunes is that they spend a lot of time fighting against it, rather than trying to work with it in the way that it's designed.
iTunes has a very specific and different design philosophy from most media management applications out there. The first and most significant issue that most new iTunes users run into is the fact that until you basically "let go" and stop worrying about file-system level organization, you will be constantly fighting against iTunes and become very frustrated with it. Of course, since many users jump right in without understanding this basic issue, they end up getting frustrated and/or getting their library into a place where it becomes even more frustrating.
You have to let iTunes take control of your media library to get the most out of it and basically pretend that anything within the iTunes Music folder doesn't exist except as seen through iTunes. Realistically as well, there is very little you can't do with iTunes once you become comfortable with it and use it as your primary music management interface.... There's rarely any need to ever touch the underlying file system -- even copying files out to other media (like SD cards) can be done from within iTunes: Just drag and drop tracks right from iTunes onto a Windows Explorer window to copy them to another folder or drive.
For anybody just getting started with iTunes, I'd strongly recommend taking a look at our Beginner's Guide to Filling your iPod (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/the-beginners-guide-to-filling-your-ipod). Even if you're very experienced with other media management applications, a quick read through this article will help you get your head around how the iTunes approach differs from most other apps out there.

I've got something to pick here. I have been a user of the iPod for quite a while now. I have the iPod 3G, 4G, 5G Video and most recently the 1G iPod Touch. From the mainstream iPod (except the iPod Touch), I have always enjoyed it's intuitive design and ease of use.
One of the things that I use the previous iPods for is to use it as an alarm clock. I plug it to my Bose SoundDock, set the alarm to play my alarm playlist (a number of LOUD songs) and presto, I wake up with a jolt. I love it!
My gripe started when I realised that my iPod Touch couldn't do that. Instead of being able to play my chosen playlist, I could only select some hardly audible pre-set ticks/rings. This is quite disappointing as I have always enjoyed the iPod, and the iPod Touch is no exception when it comes not just merely listening to my favourite tunes, but everything else. I understand that the new iPod Touch 2G has built in speakers that sorta eliminates the need for it, but what about users of the iPod Touch 1G?
It came to me that I could find an app that could eliminate this frustration. But many an app is not free and anyways, doesn't play my own chosen playlist. Anyone knows a solution to my problem?

Unfortunately, since official third-party apps cannot interact with your iPod music library, you're probably going to be out of luck on finding anything that will let you wake to a playlist on the device itself without resorting to jailbreaking. That having been said, yesterday's Apple announcement seems to indicate that the v3.0 upgrade will provide developers with this capability.
Third-party alarm apps that make other noises are certainly a possibility right now, of course, but bear in mind that you can't run background apps on the iPod touch, so you would have to ensure that this third-party app was left running before you went to bed; exit the app and it will not work. This will likely still be an issue with v3.0, since I don't think Apple plans to allow background apps in that version either.
I don't know if v3.0 will bring playlist support to the alarm function, as Apple didn't really say anything about small features like that, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
In the meantime, about the only other viable workaround would be to purchase a dedicated iPod alarm clock like the iHome iH9 that you could dock your iPod touch into. These support wake-to-iPod and wake-to-playlist features in the device itself, eliminating the need to worry about the alarm function on the device itself.

Any news on when 3.01 will be released for the ipod touch? My ipod touch takes longer to shut down and boot up since this crappy 3.0 update.

Well, 3.0.1 for the iPhone was an update released specifically to fix the SMS vulnerability in the iPhone. Since the iPod touch doesn't have SMS, it wasn't really necessary to release it for the iPod touch. Further, as far as I can tell, the 3.0.1 update doesn't do anything else in terms of features or performance improvements -- it's strictly a bug fix.
On the other hand, 3.1 is in closed beta right now, and its rumoured that it will be released in September.
All of that having been said, however... Is there any reason why you're worrying about turning your iPod touch on and off on a regular basis? Sleep mode is almost as good as turning it off completely unless you really intend to leave it unattended for an extended period of time (ie, more than a couple of days). Otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much about turning it off and on.... That's going to be slow regardless and I don't think the startup times are going to improve much even in 3.1. The 3.x OS has more stuff going on in the background, and therefore takes a little bit longer to startup regardless.

I've had a ipod touch since last November!
I've used the ipod touch day and night with a bunch of apps!
Now i'm getting bored with the ipod:o (still using, but).
Any suggestion on apps or things to use the ipod touch for?

GREAT post !
Probably many out there feel the same way.
But you should start it as a new thread, so it gets the attention it deserves.

Capacity is waay to small. I tried to cut out music I don't listen to that often (or don't like anymore) but couldn't squeeze down to even 16GB. Really disappointed since I was waiting for the touch screen to get me back on iPods, though the classic iPods are tempting.

If the 8 GB is too small maybe you are ready to remove the training wheels and purchase a 32 GB 3rd gen Touch.
I have had a 32 GB 1st gen and am finding a need to upgrade to have more room for the various differen types of media that I tend to carry. The new 64 GB Touch is just the ticket.

I just received my 64GB ipod Touch. I have been holding on getting the Touch because 32Gb was just too small for me. I have been using for 3 or 4 years now an ipod 5.5g 30GB and it's full and I still have to leave some beind. I never upgraded to the ipod touch until now because their biggest capacity was 32GB.
I'm ipod to finally upgrade my ipod and get in the "touch" generation. It's nice to be able to watch movies on a bigger screen, browse the internet and play good games on my ipod.

Hey guys, I was reading that some of you are getting bored with the Ipod but I'm loving it, I can't get enough with all the apps I'm getting.
But funny thing though, for some reason everytime I plug-in my ipod and iTunes opens up, for some reason the song I listened to during the day have this amazing Played Count!!! Do any of you know why is that? I mean, sometimes I get counts of 395 times, which is ridiculous...
And also I was wondering what happens to my jailbreak Ipod if I update it with the 3.1 version?
Do I lose all my information?

I have a 160 gig classic. Figured I'd try the 64 gig touch. It was really nice but would not transfer playlist folders when I would sync with itunes. Seems people at apple already know this (after many phone calls etc.) but it is not mentioned anywhere. So I returned the touch. Maybe someday apple will enable this feature which is on all their products except the touch & the phone.

I've had my itouch 64gb for about a week now and I am well pleased. I was going to buy a viliv x70 tablet computer, but the itouch does everything that I need. I don't understand the problem people are having with playlists. I have just one self made and it transferred over fine. Maybe it has to do with multiple playlists.

the problem in the touch is not with transferring playlists but with playkist folders. the touch does not transfer them just their contents which then leaves the playlists inside those folders all scrambled together & diorganized.
