I don't know if I got a bad set, or whether Bose have quietly improved them, but I received a new pair last week, and I have to say that they are nothing like as inadequate as the pair I tried when they first came out.
I have slated the Bose TriPort IEMs in the past, and I would no longer be quite so critical.
I still don't rate them as high as the Panasonic HJE70 or the V-**** V***, (my favourite lower priced earbuds) but they compare well with the Sony EX90 sound-wise (though the 90's prime advantage to me is fit and 'stickability-in-the-ear-even-during-vigorous-exercise) and with the CX300, Shure E2C and SuperFi 3.
They are fairly bass heavy, but lack clarity. Compared to the old EX71 benchmark the bass is almost as powerful, but is delivered with rather more subtlety and definition.
They are comfortable (though not especially well anchored in my ears) and seem well made, and they come with a neat little leather box/winder.
Like so much of Bose's stuff, these are nice, but over-priced for what they are. You could do better, but you get exactly what you expect from the Bose label - which is quality, but not quite as much quality as the price would lead you to expect.
Stuck away from home, having left my favoured phones at home, or having lost them, and with a choice between these and (say) the Shure range, the Etymotic ER6i, the Sennheiser CX300 and the usual range of Sonys (but not the EX85/90) I'd buy a pair of these as a stop gap.
