View Full Version : CX300 vs ER6i
I just ordered a pair of Ultimatebuds' ER6i for the iPhone. I tried the V-Moda Duos but found them cartoonishly bassy. That's not to say I don't like bass. Previously, my preferred buds were the CX300s. I found them to be nearly perfect for price vs quality and comfort, with plenty of bass punch. If there were such a thing as CX300s with a mic and button, I wouldn't be posting this. (not really interested in 20ft of extra cord via the Shure adapter)
Of course, instead of reading the ER6i reviews before ordering them, I'm just now seeing that many complain about the lack of bass. So my question is, for those that have experience with both the CX300s and the ER6i, (keeping in mind that I found the Vibe Duos way too bassy) is it possible I'll be disappointed with the Etys?
Thanks...

It's possible. You're going from one extreme to the other, and if you liked the CX300s I'd say that it's likely that you'll dislike the ER6i.
You're going from one extreme to the other
Thanks. When you say one extreme to the other, what extremes are you referring to?
I'm open to the idea that there might be trade offs between the 2, e.g. less bass for more soundstage, clearer mids, etc...things the CX300s are lacking.

The two extremes are "sounds great" and "oatmeal can on a string". What is "soundstage?" I've asked audiophiles to define that term and have never gotten a satisfactory response.

If you need someone to explain soundstage, either you're not paying attention to your headphones and music, or you're just in the habit of listening to such poor phones and/or music that you can't discern what it is.
Sound stage: the perceived spatial dimensions the sound appears to be coming in from. For example, I've got a $5 pair of Koss phones I got hoping they'd distract my 3 y.o. from my good stuff (they didn't). They've got a soundstage that is about 12" wide and equally high. It's like you're listening to music in a bucket. On the other hand, run my PK2s through an amp, and even though they're earbuds, it's like your standing centerstage with the full band playing around you. Other phones might sound more like you're in amphitheatre with the music coming from all around as if you were out in the audience. Same music, same encoding, but different perceived spatial relation to the music because of the soundstage created by the subtle difference is the stereo staging of the specific phones.
CX300 - extreme bass
ER6i - extreme lack of bass
Hardly extreme on the CX-300. More like "sounds like a decent stereo system would. The ER6i has no bass and somehow, some people thing that's refined...

Voodoo is you trying to convince me that you can communicate in English but apparently couldn't tell if there was a semi truck racing towards your left or your right, nor estimate how far away it sounded by virtue of the sound it's blaring horn was making.
That's all soundstage is: the recreation of the 3 dimensional soundscape from stereo. If you can neither hear, nor believe in it, you could save yourself a lot of disk space by taking all your stereo recordings and reducing them to mono.
That or you're a complete idiot, which is my guess.
