I just got my Nano.......I copied cd's (audio book) and everything appeared to be fine. Synched with ipod. then made a play list, and dialog box then said there was an iTunes update available, so I downloaded that. Went to bed!
This morning I have a clean brand new iTunes on my computer with NO files, no library, no play list.......There are five of the files on my hard drive under "My Music" but where did all the rest go???
Also, can I get the files which are on my Nano BACK to the computer????
I'm so frustrated I'm ready to return my iPod and go back to my non-techie state.

How frustrating! I feel your pain, there's nothing worse than losing all your hard work. Happen to me not that long ago... except not the way you lost it. You cannot add music from your ipod to itunes. I've tried with no success. In this case, it sound like you'll have to start all over... i know it's the last thing you want to hear. I know your frustration , and why you'd want to get rid of the ipod... but once you learn the odds and ends you'll be happy you kept it. Sorry about that... hope it all goes well for you

Actually you can copy your songs from your iPod to your PC (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=4719) through disk mode access.

As far as losing your library, I've seen a few posts saying this has happened, but never seen it myself. I can recommend backing up your library on a regular basis so if this occurs again, you can restore the library quite easily.
