I too am paranoid about scratching this work or art we call the iPod. And looking for a case that both protects and makes for easy use is a real dilemma. It's a shame that Apple didn't allow for replaceable covers for the iPod, like Nokia do for their cell phones. I don?t worry about scratching up my cell phone that cost $200 because for $10 or so I can buy a brand new cover and the phone looks like new again.

The way I read the anouncement was that Apple would release new iPods in different colors, but I don't see any mention that they are user changeable. If you want a red iPod you need to buy a new red iPod. Shame.

A company called MacSkinz is planning on releasing replaceable hard plastic covers for iPod called iPodSkinz. The iPodSkinzs will fit on the existing iPod.

Cool, I didn't realize the skins they were talking about were hard plastic. Hopefully they can make them thin enough so you can't really tell it's an add-on. Sounds like the backside will still be unprotected though.
The Macskinz for laptops are about the same thickness as a credit card...

I found this FAQ which is quite interesting ... http://www.macskinz.com/faqs.html
I find it surprising that they will only produce top covers for the iPod so they will really be more decorative than protective. I can't imagine why they couldn't come up with a clamshell skin that would protect all sides. I can see on a laptop how covering the bottom could have many issues with all the cut-outs that would be needed for vents and sockets. But the iPod is much simpler in this regard and making a bottom cover should be easy ? probably easier than making the top! Maybe this is an opportunity for another company to fill the void?
