View Full Version : Ipod Dock Question

I have a JVC KD-PDR50 installed in a 2002 Dodge Neon. The JVC receiver comes with built in iPod support (and includes the cable to connect an iPod). The cable connects from the back of the JVC head unit at one end. The other end of the cable is the standard 30-pin iPod connector for connecting directly to the bottom of an iPod.

My question is this. I want to mount the iPod in the vehicle so that it stands up and can be easily removed (with one hand). I found out (the hard way) that the "iPod Universal Dock" from Apple is not a 100% pass-through dock (in other words, all 30 pins are not passed from the back of the dock to the front where the iPod sits / connects). Does any company make a dock that is simply a 100% pass-through and accepts the standard 30-pin iPod plug?

The "Universal iPod Dock" from Apple would have been perfect for my application, but the fact that they re-route the audio (pins 3 and 4) to the "line-out" (headphone style) jack make it useless.

I have searched through this forum (as well as other web sites) and I have not found any company that manufactures a dock (or something similar) that I could use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
i have exactly the same question and actually i already fall into the trap and bought the Apple
Universal Dock ...
It does not have all the pins as passthrough so i can not connect it between my car head-unit (Kenwood DDX8027) and the relevant ipod interface.

I found this 'GINI iConec' on the net and i am waiting a reply for them whether all 30 pins are set as pass-through.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks for the reply Chris.

I finally managed to find a dock that works for me. I'm still amazed at the lack of products available that work as a full pass-through. I am left wondering what everyone else who owns a car receiver with built-in iPod controls does. But anyways, for anyone else who is looking for a pass-through dock that works with the JVC KD-PDR50 head unit, check out the "DICE iPod Cradle w/Video Output".

I had no use for the "video out" plug, but I was able to use the dock as a pass-through between my iPod nano and the JVC receiver. I did not take the dock apart and verify it is a 100% pass-through (all 30 pins), so keep this in mind if your application requires all 30 pins. My only complaint with the dock is the "nano adapter" included with the dock will scratch a generation 1 nano really badly if you are not VERY careful (I modified the plastic adapter with a dremel to prevent scratching). They also do not include a generation 2 nano adapter (which those of you with generation 2 nano's may find irritating).

Now all I have to do is find some time to finish mounting the dock in my car and I'll be all set...
