i have a used 5 gb ipod and a windows laptop
my laptop doesn't have a firewire port and i am wondering if there are any alternatives
please help

Yes there are. All you need is what's called a PCMCIA firewire card. It's a little card that fit in the side of your laptop where your modem/network card normally fits.

You should be able to get one at a good computer store (CompUSA, BestBuy etc.).

Do note, however, that your iPod will not get charged while connected to your laptop. PCMCIA cards don't supply power to the iPod. So make sure you have a full battery before doing any heavy uploading to the iPod.

one more question however
as long as i have a power adapter and the battery is full, i shouild be alright without power coming from the card?
will my ipod still be recognized by my computer?

Sure, you'll just have to charge the iPod separately from the "sync" process if there is no power coming from the pcmcia firewire card.
