I have posted before but I'm not feeling warm and fuzzy about this:
Turned my phone on today at 8 am with the following settings:
wi-fi on (it picks up mt home sys)
bluetooth on
autochecking my mac mail every 15 min
screen brightness on 50% w/auto brght on
and made no use of the phone whatsoever today..no calls, use of any functions, etc..just set it aside..
and at 7:15 pm I'm getting - "warning 15% left"
this ain't a blackberry.....

Were you in an area of really cruddy coverage, or driving between towers a lot? In my experience, when phones need to continuously poll for towers, standby battery life drops like a rock.
Here and around town, I only get down to 60% or so by late evening. That's with a bit of audio iPod use, a good 2 or 3 hours of EDGE and WiFi internet, Bluetooth on, a few phone calls, and autochecking 6 eMail accounts every 30 minutes.
Yesterday, I had a light phone/internet day, but did watch 4 episodes of 24, and still was around 50% or so.

Auto-checking email is one of the biggest consumers of battery life, especially on EDGE, which is dependent on your cellular signal. Try turning that off and just check your mail when you feel like it. That will have a big impact on your battery life.
Still, we know there's some bugs with battery life monitoring in the software. You might also want to try a full restore.

Azdude your lucky. If I use my internet on my iphone for about 2.5 hours my battery meter goes down to 50% over the edge, and thats with my screen brightness at about 25%. I noticed I get just a little over 5 hours of internet use over the edge, and you were using it for music too. That's good battery life.

My current numbers are: ~40% battery left, 4hrs 43min usage, 2d 23hours standby
Settings are: Wifi off, BT off, e-mail autocheck off, brightness 50%, auto-brightness on

How are you getting 50%, 40%, etc.? Are you guessing or is there a setting that will convert the little battery icon into a percentage?

he is estimating, anyways the usage counter under setting for the iPhone does not show true ussage time. For instance if you would fully charge your iPhone and leave it out, the next morning it will show that the iPhone has been used, where in actuality it has not been. Try timing it next time

I have the same settings as above and I get about the same battery time and also get the warning towards 7pm. Definetly not like my old blackberry.

Wifi is also killing you, I just turn it off if I am not using it and get exponentially longer battery life.

I have amazing battery life, and i have wifi on at all times, but no bluetooth. I ussually charge it about maybe 1 times every 2-3 days. I am quite suprised with the battery life, it is really good.

Yeah I have yet to go below 50% battery life on a day of normal usage. Either certain phones are reporting the batter strength below where it actually is, or I just get a very good signal during the day which saves battery. I, too, have WiFi enabled but no bluetooth.

the iPhone's screen is so beautiful i can't turn my brightness down to 50%...i have it almost full, autochecking email 15 minutes, BT off, wifi on all the time, iPod listening for about an hour and half a day, video playing for about 30 minutes, no internet surfing, Google maps here and there and mine lasts all day and then some...if i didn't watch videos i think i can easily get a day and half at full brightness and the LCD is the biggest killer on any electronics device
my recommendation? just get another USB plug for work and one for home...with my battery life and usage i never really have to use the one for work but sometimes i do sync my Outlooks...i also have a usb to car charger adapter in the car for when i go on road trips
with the past few phones i've had ranging from a SE S700i to a Motorola Ming/A1200 to a Nokia N80 to a Samsung D900 to an SE W950i now to this iPHone, the iPhone gets the longest battery life by FAR...it also takes hours to fully charge though too

Personally, I think it looks even better when it's not in scorch mode. I have mine set to about 40 - 45% and it looks fantastic.
