Can someone tell me what to do to transfer my number from my verizon account over to the new AT&T one?

I believe you have to cancel your old VWZ account first, THEN make that number available to AT&T.

when you activate your phone thru itunes it will ask you if you want to transfer your number from a different provider....
so basically there notifying verizon that you're cancelling and you'll get the cancellation fee from verizon

So are u saying u don't have 200 friends and relatives to notify? :) Then 50 of them get it wrong or forget and.....
