Hi, I just purchased my first iPod, 80gb 5G ipod video. I bought it to replace a 20 gb iriver that I've had for about 2 years.

When I connect my ipod to my car audio system I get a strange feedback like noise. Like when you put a mic too close to a speaker, only it doesn't go up and down in pitch, it's just a steady tone.

My set up is as follows:
Car: 1997 Plymouth Neon
Head unit: Alpine CDA-9856 w/ ai-net adapter connected to rca to mini-plug cable.

I tried adjusting the stereo settings and only thing that effected the tone was the treble. I had to put it down to a level that severely effected the music quality in order to cancel out the noise. Strangely enough the tone gets stronger and more high pitched when I touch the ipod and is quieter when I put it down on dashboard, seat etc.

I never had this issue with my iriver and I'm at a loss as to what's causing it. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. I have considered switching the rca cable out for the PAC alpine adapter because I'm not really interested controlling the ipod through the head unit. I'm just worried that it wouldn't fix the issue. Thanks again!

Hi, If youre charging your ipod while you drive that sound would be alternator noise. I had this same problem but never was able to resolve it. So I just make sure the ipod is well charged before my big trips, and dont recharge it while a drive and listen. I hope that helps.

If the tone is steady, it's p'bly a faulty ground; try a new cable and make sure jacks are clean.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Tugger - I'm not charging the ipod in the car at all, it's just an rca cable plugged into the headphone jack.

I'm going to try switching out the cable tomorrow. I probably should have done that before I posted but I was just really frustrated. I'll keep you guys posted.
