My friend just got a new deck for his car that can connect directly to his iPod.. but the thing is, the iPod interface is disabled while plugged in, so it cannot play videos.
Are there any decks that would allow this?
I just started looking into car-kits and stuff, and I have to be honest I am pretty in over my head. I always thought it would be as simple as going to a store, finding a deck with iPod compatibility, and getting it installed.. is it not?
I was just hoping I could have a deck with an iPod connector so I could place it in my cup holder or something (which, in my car, is located just in front and below where my current deck is..
Any suggestions?
EDIT: Also, what would be a good car holder? I currently use the Belkin TuneDok, but it's only 1 size, meaning I have to take off my case just to put it in.. which is a pretty big hassle.. I'm looking for more of an adjustable holder..

Alpine shows an iPod Video interface add-on for their A/V headunits in their 2007 brochure. I checked around on the Alpine site and was unable to find any info on it.

I looked into the Alpine adapter, and it seems that it may have originally been a European product. If you Google the part number, there are several UK sites that carry it. YOu may be able to get it shipped here, it should work fine with a US deck.

IF you want a car deck that can play videos off of the screen, Id suggest getting
Clarion MAX675VD with video ipod cable
or
Clarion VRX series deck.
the MAX675VD is the deck I have in my car. It is a double DIN deck that allows you ipod video as well as a great ipod interface for music. Only problem with the Video playback is you have to choose and control your Videos through the ipod, not the deck.
Small price to pay for such a great product and ease of use. Again I have one in my 2007 camry and it works exceptionally well and the sound quality is above par. Wish the sound quality could be tweaked a bit more but for the most part it works out great.
Hope this helps

I just bought a Classic 80 and an Alpine CDA9883. My question is, can I watch an IPOD video/podcast ON THE IPOD while the Ipod is connected the head unit? By default, it disables the screen and the controls, and just plays the audio thru the car stereo.
Are there any hacks (to the cable?) to enable video on the IPOD screen while connected to the Alpine?

With enough know-how, I think it is possible. It should just be a matter of finding out which pin disables the display and bypassing it. I've never heard of anyone attempting it though. The iPod dock connector schematic is freely available online, Google it and you may be able to find the pin to disable the screen lock-out.
A word of warning though: be prepared to replace your cable if you hack into it. The wires in there are fricken tiny and it is very easy to ruin the cable once you get through the jacket.

we see the same problem all the time we use any stereo with AUX input sometimes factory stereos and a flip down screen or headrest screen and we install this cable
http://www.oemautosound.com/pc-352-88-ipod-docking-to-rca-video-charging-cable.aspx
yellow rca plugs in to monitor and white and red rca plug in to the aux input of the radio
it also charges the ipod the only problem is that you need the ipod to control or change movies.
there are many interfaces or head units like alpine, pioneer, sony, usa specs, dice, peripheral and they all block the ipod and video
