View Full Version : Top 10 List of iPhone annoyances.

I'm gonna keep it simple
#1. Speaker phone useless not loud enough
#2. Bluetooth useless (headsets only)
#3. no games (this will change soon I hope with Nintendo help)
#4. no flash support
#5. Not very customizable Besides wallpaper which you rarely see.
#6. no LED back light LED would save so much battery
#7. no GPS come one its 2007 an no GPS?
#8. weak antenna signal strength
#9. no Video output from iPhone can't hook it up to a TV
#10. EDGE is too slow 200kbps I miss Sprints EVDO 800kbps

Edge seems fast enough for me. I only sprints reg data network, not the evdo.
GPS, dont care.
Video output, cool idea, but dont care. No content on it would look good outputed on a tv anyway.
Antenna signal strength seem way better then my treo's was.
Bluetooth...ok so wireless syncing would be great, I admit. But do you know how LONG it would take over bluetooth to sync music and video? I'd end up hardwiring it for that anyway. So, meh.
My "gripes"
1) Ringer is not loud enough at loudest volume. Too easy to miss a call in a crowded area.
2) well...ummm I cant really think of any other gripes at the moment. Oh wait one just hit me....
This thing seems to be really powerful. The instant I got in my truck my speakers starting the occasional humming with cell interference, and even though my phone is 2.5' away from my computer speakers it does periodically, too.
That gets annoying. Especially when one reason for this is to run audio to my car. But, its no biggie either. There is a way around everything.

#3. no games (this will change soon I hope with Nintendo help)
Don't count on it.
Also, your list is interesting but includes some things that seem minor while leaving off some things (like the inability to select text in an email, no copy/paste and so forth) that are much more disturbing.

give me a break. the phone just came out. how about we give them a couple months to start the updates and see what happens over the next 6-12 months total.

Beta tester how. Its fully working phone. Not like I am hunting or finding flaws and glitches.
Like the iphone is only product to be forced into the market and then made better as time goes on? big difference is like the xbox360,wii, and dare i say ps3, most of the big upgrades can and will be via software updates instead of more expensive hardware ones.
Get the phone to the people. Let them tell you what the want. Even if the vast majority seem to want to act like crybabies half the time.

Where are you getting that it's not LED backlit from? I'd think it would almost certainly would be. iPods have been LED backlit since they were released...

12. No MMS or picture messaging
Seriously considering returning even though the phone is a lot of fun.

I didn't buy my phone as a replacement for my Video iPod but I can't figure out why they didn't include lyric display. This is one of my favorite features of the iPod. Oh well, full screen album art is a nice start and am stoked on the built in speakers.

I dont see how that is defensive. That is how I believed they would always handle the phone. software updates after the release.
The fact you and several others run around screaming and crying about what the phone doesnt have right NOW is just stupid. Its called being patient.

dumbest one i've heard. especially since it was battery life thats been heavily praised.

the most annoying thing by far is the fact that there is no "mark all as read" or any kind of 1 button inbox purge button. Gmail is also totally acting up. It says I have over 100 unread messages even though I have "show only 25" selected, and it totally messes with it. I ended up just using 1 email account on the phone instead of the 3 I wanted to use because it was annoying to always see I had unread mail, when I didnt.

I was told at the Apple Store that they didn't have time to come up with an AppleCare package for the iPhone, and one will be launched later, with the ability to purchase it retroactively. So once they launch it, anytime within the first year you can buy it.
See ya

yap no MMS...
philapod
07-02-2007, 02:18 AM
theres no MMS, but you might as well just send an email. if you want to send a picture message to a friend's cell phone, I think you can just send it to their wireless-number@carrier.com or whatever.
My annoyances...
[edit] OH YEAH! my #1 annoyance is the lack of FLASH. WTF Apple? You can't have the 'full blown internet' without flash!
2) no personalized ring tones (i hope they dont charge for them later -.-)
3) No AIM/Windows Messenger/Chat client app (perhaps someone can make a nice iPhone specific web 2.0 app)
4) No 'Enter' button on the soft keyboard. I know there is a carriage return button, but thats not the same.
5) I wish i could select, copy, paste text
6) I wish I could save pictures I find on the web
Neo8234
07-02-2007, 02:34 AM
My top gripes:
1) No ability to type a name quickly in the contacts list by using the keyboard (similar to how it works in windows mobile)
2) Speakerphone not loud enough, esp. for watching youtube videos etc..
3) No MMS
4) No ability to assign an MP3 as a ringtone. Should allow you to pick a song and also choose what point in the song to start playing at. I think this would be pretty simple to implement, maybe you just have to keep a separate playlist called "Ringtones" that has to be synced if you want to use them as tones.
5) No video recording
6) No Flash
I would also complain about the using the pop3 email for gmail since it loses all of the great gmail features... but I know Google is developing a custom Gmail app for the iphone that we should have within a few weeks.
The recessed headphone port annoyed me until i went to apple store and bought a Belkin extender for an overpriced $10...
I think those are my top ones right now.

mrmindless
07-02-2007, 11:39 AM
1) can't select text
2) can't copy or paste the text that can't be selected
3) the magnifier sometimes draws off the screen
4) I'd like to see more applications "flip" to the side, especially useful for text entry.
5) no 3rd party apps - I really want Password Wallet & Salling Clicker
6) can't select which apps are in the "dock" - I definitely use Calendar more than Mail
7) tied to Safari for bookmark sync - I use FireFox on Windows and OmniWeb on my Macs. This will get me to try out Safari again though.
8) too quiet at full volume
9) no firewire sync - I now have a number of paperweight connectors
10) as a Verizon convert the speaker interference will take some getting used to
1-5 are my A list, but "m not hdolding my breath on #5.
Does anyone know if there is a dedicated feedback area on Apple.com for iPhone? It generally does more good to ##### to those who can change things than to each other.

The lack of Applecare bothers me, but if it is going to come out I will be fine waiting.
My complaints are much less then others - lack of ring tones is annoying (as is the inability to get more), not being able to send text pictures, some minor annoyances that I hope will go away with future updates, like cut and paste, saving pictures of the net, and the seemingly worthless ability to set the wall paper when I see it only when I unlock the phone.
Otherwise I am pleased. Since I never used a faster network I don't mind the EDGE network. I don't think the wifi hopping is a good intermediate solution, but at least it is faster from time to time.

I miss the ability to change the dictionary. On my Blackberry, I hit the space-bar twice and it changed it ti ". " which was nice. I also had a lot of custom words. eg:
sig = my multi-line signature.
ccc = "Call my cell if you can, the number is ***-***-****"
otr = "I'm on the road, but I read your email and will respond when I get back to the office"
I had quite a few more...and I miss them already.
My 10 annoyances
1) Edge
2) AT&T
3) Copy and Paste not being there
4) GPS
5) Battery life is bad
6) Exchange support
7) 8Gb's is the largest size (I'd have paid a lot more for the 32Gb that they have out now)
8) The rigntones that come with it suck
9) no sending pictures via sms
10) no verbal voice commands

There's no 32 gig iPhone.
I know that. What I'm saying is that there are 32Gb memory chips.
Someone posted the following list on Yahoo message board:
---------------
Why I wouldn't buy an i-phone (top 40)
Reasons:
1. closed system - no apps, no installing, you have a closed box.
2. no mms (no sending pictures or sounds) = no fun
3. proprietary sim chip (no swapping this puppy, etc.)
4. no 3G -- the iphone currently has the SAME speed as my current older phone (edge) What about the future?
5. touch screen texting - try sending someone a fast sms or "speedy" respond on this device
6. required 2-hand operation (i love the fact that i can operate my phone with ONE hand)
7. not expandable (no cards of any kind can be used to upgrade my storage space)
8. 2 megapixel phone (yikes -- is this 1990)?
9. no video recording (you read this right)
10.no GPS - my next phone will definitely have GPS built in
11. can't replace own battery - what were they thinking?
12. proprietary headphone jack - throw out your set baby, new'ns required!
13. no IM clients (can't do real-time messaging, like i do on my current phone)
14. special plan required to use phone (A T & T special plan)
15. must rely on iTunes to activate phone (all kinds of problems currently in activation)
16. if touchscreen cracks, no phone (phone is reliant on one screen for everything)
17. no insurance on screen breaking - if screen breaks, you have a paperweight
18. untested OS on a mobile device
19. phone call quality inherently bad (confirmed w/ users)
20. no TV out
21. most apps on iphone can be installed on the Symbian OS
22. CAN NOT use mp3(s) on your "music" phone as a RINGTONES!
23. for the price, you can get an 80gig ipod AND a 30gig ipod and still have $ left for a different phone
24. phone is incompatible with NON-protected files (non-iTunes)
25. camera: no white balance options, no true camera features
26. 2 year contract necessary, no subsidized cost = point?
27. not compatible with java (with so much on the web, what will this be like?)
28. not compatible with flash (with so much on the web, what will this be like?)
29. no music streaming
30. putting music onto iphone is more complicated vs.putting music onto ipod (creating playlists, etc.)
31. not stereo bluetooth compatible
32. no bluetooth file transfer
33. no voice dialing
34. no one-touch dialing
35. can't use iphone as a voice recorder
36. not blackberry compatible
37. no true push e-mail (yahoo email on iphone takes about 15min to be received)
38. NO voice over IP (no skype calls, no free calls over internet)
39. no video calling
40. two words: FACE GREASE

A few more "A" list items after another day:
No category support in the address book. This is a killer.
No searching in the address book. Not a killer but very important.
No dedicated contacts app is strange, I'm not always making a phone call when I'm looking for a contact.
Last and least of all, I feel like return and backspace should be swapped on the keyboard.

I agree with most everyone's suggestions, with lack of Flash and the inability to select more than one email being high on the list of missing features...
However, no one has mentioned my number one complaint - the recessed headphone jack! The iphone will not work with standard 1/8 into a car auxiliary. How is everyone using it in that capacity?
I made a thread for this issue and was told to buy a cheaper 1/8 to 1/8 and cut it with a knife... are you kidding? I'm sure Apple is working on it but, as most new cars have an AUX port, that seems as integral as a car charger. WTF.

Don't count on that. It was a very conscious design decision on their part. A nice case of form over function.
Either get the $10 Belkin shorty adaptors or make your own slimmed down plug. what other sort of solution are you expecting? I suppose you could clamp your iPhone in a drill press and clearance it that way too, if you really are looking for something different.... :shake:

I am expecting Apple or Belkin or Monster to develop a 1/8 to 1/8 iphone specific cable with one jack end extruded to properly fit the iphone.
As I said, standard 1/8" cables don't work - plus the wretched reviews of the Belkin on Apple's site - and I can't really imagine Steve Jobs with a box cutter paring down a Radio Shack jack.

2) no flash - has apple ever surfed the web? Do they know how many sites use flash? Even Yahoo uses flash!!
Ill add more when I figure out how I want to word them.

battery life would suck with bluetooth headsets for music
I don't really care about bluetooth headsets for music. What I do want to do with bluetooth is be able to quickly send people a picture or music or a video quickly over bluetooth for free rather than having to send them an email or MMS (which you can't do anyway). I do understand that copying copyrighted music is wrong, although doing it via bluetooth is hardly damaging. People aren't going to share GB's of music using bluetooth, because it would take for ever. Plus, it would be nice to share a picture with someone that you have taken and send it to anyone with a bluetooth phone or laptop or whatever.
That and flash are my only real two gripes. I hate flash, but the fact is, a lot of websites use it. Not everyone is going to do a YouTube and create an iPhone specific site, and they shouldn't have to either. I still think they have got a bit to do before they get that full web experience.
I am really hoping they have got a 16GB 3G version when it comes to Europe. I am really hoping that T-Mobile advert was genuine. The iPhone still seems so much more tempting than the iPod Touch.
Also, one thing that would be really cool is using the Wi-Fi to take calls and send texts. I live out in the sticks and have to prop my phone up near the window to get a signal. It would be could if it could use a VoIP type thing where is uses my broadband connection. I have a thing set-up with my broadband provider, the BT Home Hub, and it works really well. They also have a thing where is uses Wi-Fi to charge land-line rates when you are on the Wi-Fi in your home and acts as a normal mobile when out.

Don't be propagandized by the RIAA. Go read up on fair use.
Unless I missed it, I haven't seen anyone mention the lack of a "nagging" feature.
To me, this is the biggest thing missing from this phone. If a call, text, voicemail, etc. comes in and I miss it (because I'm away from my phone or I don't hear the ringer in a loud environment), there is no audible or visual notification beyond the initial one.
Therefore, unless you turn on the screen, you would never know that you missed something potentially important.
The Treo always had the ability to set how frequently that nag would occur and whether it was audible, screen lightup, or even vibrate.
There are others, but this is by far the most important feature missing for me. And I did submit it as feedback on Apple's site.

Well look at the aesthetics of the iphone. There are no flip screens (or outer screens) to "nag" at you about messages, and there also is no where to put a little light beacon either. Face it, your beautiful iphone might not be so beautiful if it had all the ugly bells and whistles your palm treo had. Besides, I have never in my life owned a phone that had these nagging features. Granted I have primarily used Nokia phones but still, not all phones do those things.

Don't be propagandized by the RIAA. Go read up on fair use.
Fair use would be repurposing the song into other formats so that you, the purchaser of the right to listen to the music (you don't own the song, you own the right to play it) can listen to it in the manner you wish. Fair use wouldn't be about giving songs to other people, or taking over distribution of the song, which right you haven't purchased.
Song sharing in this manner is wrong. It always has been, though the RIAA looked the other way until the technology caught up to the point where music can now be MASS shared with no loss in quality. I don't care much for the RIAA's tactics, and I do think they need to rethink their basic business to keep up with the reality of the world, because unfortunately it does make for treating honest consumers like thieves...but I also don't think much of the justifications for song sharing. They all just sound like manufactured excuses to steal, to me.

Idiocy.
Look, adding a blinking LCD somewhere on the outside to let you know you have messages wouldn't have intruded on the design at all. It could have been so unobtrusive that it you didn't even notice it when iPhone had no messages to report. The idea that the form factor is perfect beyond reproach is nothing short of foolish and severely lacking in imagination.
I agree with pup. One of the big down sides to iPhone is the lack of a message light. Practically every other cell on the market has this function. Having it would save a ton of time and battery life by allowing us to see at a glance that we don't have to wake up the device.

Hogwash. Very few people share lossless files. MP3 is like a bad photocopy. It's not an exact digital duplicate. Look at the P2Ps sometime. They're all filled up with MP3s with just a few FLACs here and there.
Besides, credible independent market research suggests that music sharing results in more sales, not less.

It's not a matter of "cowed". It's a matter of right and wrong. How can you not see it as stealing? The recording artist and the record producer -- the music industry -- assumed all the cost of producing the song. And you're taking a copy of it without giving anything back. How could that not be construed as stealing?
Most users either don't hear or don't care about the losses due to compression...hence the preponderance of MP3 players. But even if you DO care, this is entirely different. If I had an LP or a cassette tape, and made a copy for you...that first generation copy would be of lesser quality than the original. I could only distribute that copy one at a time...and if you wanted to make a copy of that copy, then you'd be making a second generation copy that would sound still worse.
Now, the song is compressed ONCE...and distributed in a viral manner that doesn't lose anything with successive generations, becuase no one is going to compress an MP3 still further. And of course thanks to the Internet it's distributed on a massive scale: one person distributing to millions.
Marketing is done by the consent of the marketer, not the marketed. Studies showing that filesharing leads to more revenues...fine. But that's besides the point. It illustrates that the RIAA should redefine their model, sure, but it's still their music, and you're still stealing it, and trying to justify it afterwards.

I know the RIAA's argument. Thanks for regurgitating it.
I'm a musician myself. I've always been keenly interested in the issue of digital distribution and copyright protection. Suffice it to say that I disagree with most of what you have to say on the topic. I'd direct you to the many artists who choose to share their music openly. I'd also remind you that the bulk of profits from music sales never end up in the pocket of the artists themselves. The vast majority of that cash goes to executives who had little or nothing to do with the creation of the product.
Sorry, lkalliance. I can see that you feel strongly about this. Thing is? There are different viewpoints. Viewpoints that are just as valid as yours.

So instead of agreeing to disagree, you're instead going to try to demean me? I'm in favor of the owner of the song determining how that song is to be distributed. You're a musician, that's great. And you distribute your songs online, that's also great. I admire the dedication and hard work and artistic gifts it takes to be a musician...I wish I had them.
WHERE the money ends up is an entirely different issue. I don't control that, and the appropriate way for me to try to affect that issue is, as you point out, to only purchase music from artists that are distributing on their own, freely or not. Filesharing the songs doesn't put any more money into the artist's pocket...I would guess that it takes more OUT as the RIAA feels the need to recoup the costs in some way. But that would only be a guess.
When you distribute your music freely, and you encourage people to further distributed it, such as under a shareware GNU license for software, that's great. You -- the creator and owner of the music -- are giving your customers much greater rights. But that's YOUR decision. The RIAA isn't giving those rights, and that's THEIR decision. That doesn't make what they're doing "wrong" and what you're doing "right". It might make what they're doing "unwise" and what you're doing "enlightened" and I wouldn't debate that point. But just because it's enlightened doesn't mean that it makes it universally OK.

Live updating Smart Playlists not syncing correctly annoys me.
I have a "Recently Added" smart playlist where I check all 3 checkboxes, that is...
- limit to '25' 'items' selected by 'most recently added'
- match only checked items
- live updating
instead of giving me the 25 most recent items, like iTunes correctly shows, it syncs a playlist of the first 25 items I added to my iPhone -.-
[UPDATE] LOL
So I got curious, if I ask for the 25 most recently added items and I get the first 25, what would happen if I make it sync the 25 least recently added items?
TADA! iPhone now gets the 25 most recently added items!!! Genius... no, not just Genius, it's Apple Genius!

Live updating Smart Playlists not syncing correctly annoys me.
Next to the lack of copy/paste, this is my second most bothersome issue with iPhone. Since iPhone has such limited space, it's pretty critical to be able to use Smart Playlists to manage songs that get synced to it. The fact that they don't work right really gets under my skin. Seems like a simple thing that Apple should have fixed by now.

Epoch meltdown, deftdrummer1. Looks like you're going on my ignore list.
Back on topic, the Safari crashes are uber annoying too. They lessened with the firmware updates but it's still a big problem. Clearing the cache helps but it's still really unstable.
The more I use it, the more I wish iPhone had a message light too. Having to click the home button and then swipe it to wake it up and check for messages makes for too many steps and uses battery unnecessarily.

Care to explain more? I've never messed with smart playlists, and I'm a bit concerned that you can't just drag and drop songs to the iPhone. Could you just make one giant playlist that's your whole library, and then do whatever other specific playlists you wanted?

The behavior I'm seeing is this:
I have two smart playlists that I want to sync to iPhone. One is all the songs I've added to iTunes in the last three months (about 500 songs usually) and the other is the 300 least recently played songs in my library. All of these songs sync to the iPhone, but when you look at the playlists on the device, all the songs from both lists are in both playlists.
So, if you want to use one big playlist that syncs everything, I THINK that would work but I'm not sure since my 55+ gig library won't all fit on iPhone.
Anyone else have experiences with smart playlists and iPhone? Maybe we need a thread devoted just to this issue.

The reported situation is definitely the same issue I'm having, and I've already reported it to Apple via their iPhone Feedback (http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html) page, and I'd encourage others experiencing this issue to do the same.
In short, smart playlists that base their criteria on either least or most recent groupings (whether that be date added or date played) work the opposite of how they do on every other iPod device. The problem does not affect ALL smart playlists, but definitely affects those with criteria that limits their selection to other manual playlists, as well as certain other conditions.

Interesting. Since I've never tried to sync other types of smart playlists, I didn't know that the issue was limited to the most recent, least recent variety. I'll go make an official report through the Apple form right now.

I had a reoccurrance with the one real problem I've had: my iPhone is crashing with increasing frequency. Safari, YouTube and Maps. I was trying to map out a route this morning, and kept getting crashes. I'm considering restoring the phone, seeing if that helps or hurts.
The lack of a message light is one I'd agree with as something I'd like, but not as a huge issue. I'm also not sure on its wake-from-sleep status...it usually deposits me back where it was when it fell asleep, but sometimes I wonder if I'd not prefer it if it went back to the home page. I wish there were a setting to say "if asleep for more than X minutes, wake to home page".

One of my annoyances is the fact that you can't turn off the gyro thingy. Iphone seems to get confused easily as to the orientation depending on if it is flat or horizontal. Kinda annoying cause cover flow always seems to get activated somehow. Or maybe if there was like a manual fit to screen option.

I've got several concerns about the iPhone that I'm curious about.
1) I've not seen any, but are there any current programs/mods that allow the horizontal keyboard for email, or any other app besides Safari?
2) I'm told the phone can put out significant interference with speakers. Has anyone had issues with generating static in their car(where I will likely get the majority of my music listening done)?
3) How much trouble does it have loading large files in email? Are we talking 10 meg .pdfs, or as little as 1 or 2?
4) Not having gps in google maps is a bit unfortunate, but is there any way to "bookmark" locations in google maps? If not directly in that program, maybe by bookmarking locations in your contacts(the review here said you could get address info from there, in google maps)?

I do not know of any third-party extensions that allow for the wider keyboard in Mail.
As for Google Maps, yes, you can bookmark any location you want. You can also default to that location. For example, any time I load Google Maps, it automatically takes me "Home."

Like some have said, the linking between gmail and iphone is just terrible with pop3. iphone is ALWAYS displaying that there are anywhere from 20-30 messages on my phone that have not been read, just because they were found on the gmail server. I have tried the trick of turning off "recent mode" in the options but it doesn't seem to do anything. I really wish email would be a little bit better, like being able to imbed images right from the compose screen instead of going to the image first and clicking "insert in email". Lot of little things, few big things (other than the recessed headphone jack ARGGGG.

On another side note, anybody ever wonder why the iphone's home screen doesn't have the battery & signal indicators show up in color? All the apps and other screens display it in color but the home screen is grayscale. Weird.

They're monochrome on the home screen because they appear on a black background there. The color icons would have looked weird on that background. Other examples of this design are seen in the bottom buttons in the iPod and YouTube modules.
