I have a D-Link DI-514 wireless router that I use in my house. I connect to the router with several different PC's with no problem.
My iPhone connects to the router but freezes during downloads. It will open about the first 1/5 of a page or YouTube video and than stop. I disconnect, reenter my network password and the same thing happens.
The iPhone shows it is connected to the network, but will not dl any data.
Any suggestions?

Does it work better the closer you are to the access point? Is there another wireless device like a cordless phone, microwave, etc., between you and the access point? If you are getting at least a partial download, it would seem that your settings are good.
I have three access points in my home, in different corners of the home. If I pick the one closest to where my phone is, I don't get any interrupton of connection.
<<EDIT>>
All three of my access points are Linksys. None are newer than a few years old.

I have a DI-614+ and am having the same problem. It will connect and sometimes it will load up pages with no problems, but other times it will hang and refuse to load a page or finish loading a page.
I haven't been able to find a fix yet.

It does not seem to matter if I am sitting right next to the router or on the other side of the house.
Perhaps I will buy a Linksys router and see if that fixes my problem.

Hello,
I have a D-Link router and have the connection problems as well - rarely works and VERY SLOW when it does.
I went up to a local internet hotspot coffeeshop. Worked like a charm the speed and consistancy blew me away. I was ready to take the iphone back thinking it didn't work. Now it appears the D-Link router is the problem.

I guess I'll be going into Best Buy and buying a Linksys router tomorrow. I think I remember a $50 Linksys in their flyer this morning.
Don't buy a lynksys. There are problems with those. See hte thread here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=322475
and also over at everythingiphone.com

ljp, I've had nothing but good things from lynksys. Dlink on the other hand makes garbage.
I really recommend lynksys over any other brand -- they are owned by Cisco so their quality controls is a little bit better then average.
I would generally agree except in this specific instance. I've had my lynksys for years, I love it. However, an awful lot of the people who seem to be having problems getting iphone to work with their wifi are using lynksys. I've tried all the suggested fixes posted in all the forums I can find. I was on the phone with apple for about 2 hours. I can't get it to work. Yet, when I go out, I hook up to wifi elsewhere without a problem. Just at home with my lynksys I can't make it work.
My point was only that before he rushes out and buys a lynksys, he should check all the fixes etc.

WiFi connection problems with cellphones is a common complaint. The Dash was notorious for it. . The radio is a lot smaller than that in a laptop.

What type of encryption are you using on your network ljp? are you using 802.11b, g? both?
What problem are you having exactly? is it just not connecting?

Hmm.
Personally, I would go for a Belkin none the less.
I think we've gone through about.. 3 D-Links. Aboslutely crap they are.
We still use one, though, Belkin's are pricy!
Well, at this point I've pretty much tried them all. Initially I had no security on my router. I had never bothered after trying to figure it out for like 20 minutes then not bothering because I don't really care if someone else uses my wifi.
It says it connects but trying to get to any server just doesn't work. Then I tried the rebooting (powering all of it off) modems routers and iphone thing that people have been trying. Tried turning airport mode off and on.
Then I called apple. Apple had me restore. No go. Then they had me click the renew lease button, the restore network defaults buttons. Nothing.
Then they had me go to my router and switch from mixed b and g to g only. Apple gave up after that.
Then someone posted link to lynksys how to configure your router pages. So, I set WEP security. Didn't work. I tried using the hex dec whateveritis password instead. didnt' work. Then I added the $ in front. Then I tried the caps lock no caps lock fix.
Then I switched to WAP security.
Then I tried using static DNS and typing in first the first DNS, then the second DNS.
All thorugh all of this I was rebooting modems and routers as well as reseting iphone network settings, forgetting my network etc.
Every time I tried some new router setting thing I also had to reconfigure my computer, and I could always make it work, so I must be typing the right passwords.
I have tried literally every combination of things I have seen posted all over the damn internet and can't make it work. Every once in a while I get about 4 seconds of connectivity before it stops again. I can pretty much ALWAYS get to my router with the phone. I type the ip and the phone will go there, so it is connecting ot the router, but it can't get past that.
I did take it out and was able to hook up to wifi no problem at all at the office. Honestly the only reason I haven't already bought a new router is that I'm stubborn.

What model of router is it?

Same as mine... hummmm
I personaly run hacked firmware (DD-WRT) if you are not afraid of bricking it you can try changing it to that...
Any other wifi networks around you? As some one else noted any microwave emitting devices or anything of that nature? PC is working fine you said?
There's no unsecure wifi that I can connect to with any regularity. But I can connect fine at the office to the free wifi there. Everything works with the router except the iphone. I have 2 tivo's and xobx360 running off it too. Although I have to go back and take off the security because I didn't bother changing anything but the laptop I'm using.
I think I'm gonna give up. 90% of what I was doing today is really beyond my capabilities. I was following instructions people were posting. Its only because I was able to keep the laptop running that I figure I was doing it somewhat correctly. I don't have the first idea how to start messing with the firmware. Well, I mean, I do, clearly I can use google and follow instructions, but I'd probably figure out just enough to crash the whole thing. But thanks for the idea. And listening to me vent. :)

So far I have been successful with the WiFi. I have a Belkin pre-n router and the connection is phenomenal. I have it set to be open but I don't broadcast the network name, so unless you know that you should not be easily able to connect to me. I seem to snag a lot of networks around the neighborhoods. I am rather surprised at home many people leave themselves totally open.
In the past I have had little to no success with D-link or Linksys. I have no idea why, but my Mac laptop always had trouble connecting and staying connected to those. That is what drove me to the Belkin and I never looked back.

I have an issue on my belkin. I am logged into the wi-fi on the iPhone, but I get an error that safari can not access the server. If I de-activade wi-fi the page loads from edge, then if I re-enable the wi-fi the page will refresh via the wi-fi. I tried this on several pages and utube.
any ideas?

I've heard bad things about all brand of routers. I currently have a Linksys and other than having to reset it about once every week it's fine.
Why not try the Apple Airport Extreme? I've heard good things about it although it's a bit expensive.

As was mentioned there can be a conflict with wireless IP addresses when iPhone tries to connect to your wireless router.
Step 1: open your network pref pane and click one TCP/IP info. generally you should see Using DHCP. Note your subnet mask and router IP address.
Step2: on the iPhone -go to "settings" - Wi-Fi set to "on" and select: choose a network
Step 3: after selecting your wireless network change to static IP temporarly.
Step 4: clear IP address field go down to subnet mask and enter manually same with router Ip you saw on the pref pane.
Step 5: switch back to DHCP and renew
If you are prompted for a WEP switch to WEP ACII and preceed password with $. ..sometimes not required.
You may need to click "forget network" and turn off phone before proceeding with the above.

I don't have this option when it prompts me for a password:
Before your enter your password tap on the "WEP SECURITY" (its right above where your pass word goes)
then check the wep,hex... box (its on the bottom)
Any idea why?
Hey guys...
I have the solution to problems with the D-link 514 router. I have the same router.
The problems is that the D-link is a "B" router. Meaning 802.11b.
The iPhone is looking for a "G" router. (long story on how I know this but I'll explain that later).
You will see that if you go to someone with a newer router (ie; a "g" or even "n"), that your iPhone will work FOR SURE!!!
I went and bought a 802.11g router and problem is solved. I got the Netgear WGR614 myself but I am sure ANY "g" router will work.
Trust me. This is the solution. The iPhone does not like 802.11b as it is old technology.
I signed up just to answer this problem since I knew exactly what the issue was.
Enjoy...
just replying from my iPhone to test it out. this is sweet!

Linksys WRT-54GL + Tomato firmware works great with my iPhone, a MBP, and several other wired and wireless clients.
I've found Tomato is more stable than DD-WRT, and does most of what most people need compared to it as well. DD-WRT is great if you're running, say, VoIP off of your router or using it as a captive portal AP, but if you just want a good stable firmware for everday surfing, I'd recommend trying out Tomato.

If your iPhone is able to connect to your wireless network but unable to connect to the internet, then the problem might be with the iPhone's DNS settings. The iPhone seems to have trouble using some wireless routers as DNS servers. Changing your iPhones DNS settings should fix the problem. I've written more on this here:

I've got a D-Link DI-624 router and I was able to connect my iPhone right away. Just entered the network ID and password.
