Alrighty, I put some songs off a cd of mine on my iPhone and then later wanted to remove them, well I deleted them from my library and then sync'd my phone and they are still on the phone but not in my library.

Oh and also, the reason for me deleting the songs from my phone is because they wouldnt play, it show them playing but I got no sound out of the phone or earbuds, does anyone know what this could be?

I don't have an iPhone so I can't help you much, but have a look here and see if what you did matches what is written:

that is helpful information but not exactly what I'm looking for, I know with an iPod I can select it and highlight and right click delete and I'm done, but when I click on the iPhone it doesn't show what's on it, so I have no idea how do delete songs off of it.

Thank you for your help, it was much appreciated.

What is supposed to happen is that if you remove a song from your iTunes library, it's also going to be removed from your iPhone, which is exactly what happens with an iPod in automatic synchronization mode.

The fact that this is not happening, combined with the fact that you can't play these tracks on your iPhone, would suggest to me that there is something else wrong, as this is most definitely not normal behaviour.

I would suggest doing a "Restore" on the iPhone to return it to factory settings (or at least your last backed up state) and see if this resolves the issue.

I was thinking the same thing, I was hoping that I didnt have to do that though, I was hoping that it was something a little bit more of the norm, lol.

By the way Im at CompUSA on a iMac, I WISH I HAD ONE OF THESE!!!!!!!

someone up here at CompUSA told me that if I look in my hard drive on XP and find the music folder that I can open it up there and delete them, does that sound right????

No, that definitely doesn't sound right at all.

Firstly, if he's talking about iTunes, this doesn't apply, since if they're not listed in the iTunes library itself (ie, seen through iTunes), then they should be removed from the iPod/iPhone regardless of whether or not the underlying file exists.

Secondly, if he's talking about deleting the file via disk mode, even on an iPod (which does have a disk mode), you should never, ever do this. The iPod tracks its files via an internal database, and removing the file will not remove the database entry anyway -- it will simply result in the file being unplayable.

Of course, since the iPhone doesn't have a disk mode, this doesn't apply anyway.

Alright, I did a restore and now the songs are gone, so can someone please walk me through how to add songs on iPhone, just in case I'm dong it wrong?

It should be pretty much the same as it is for the iPod. Once you've completed any of hte other activation/configuration processes, just go to the "Music" tab and select either all content, or select specified playlists to sync.

You may also want to confirm that the songs in question actually play properly in iTunes, just to ensure that there aren't some issues on the source computer.

I can create my own playlist correct?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, you can create several. Just choose them for synchronization from the "Music" tab if you only want to synchronize some of your content, rather than all of it.

If you choose to sync your entire library, then ALL of your playlists should show up on the iPhone as well (you don't need to specifically select them in this case).

Cool, thanks for the help.

Back to removing music from the iPhone, do I just delete the song from my playlist in iTunes and the sync and eject?

If you're syncing selected playlists, then that's definitely the way it should work. If you remove a track from a playlist that you've selected for synchronization to your iPhone, it should remove it from the iPhone on the next sync.

Of course, if you've selected ALL of your tracks for synchronization (ie, the "All songs and playlists" setting), then the track will be synced to your iPhone regardless of whether it's in any playlists or not (since you've opted to sync your entire library). If you want to remove/exclude certain tracks in this case, then you either have to remove them from your library completely, or use the "Only sync checked items" setting, which can be found on the "Summary" tab of your iPhone preferences (in iTunes).

If you turn on "Only sync checked items" then anything in your iTunes library that is UNchecked will not be synced to your iPhone, and/or removed if it's already there. Keep in mind, however, that UNchecked tracks will also be skipped when playing a playlist or album in iTunes itself (you can only play them by double-clicking on them directly).
