Summer's here (well, nearly). So what's the best 'balls-out, top-down, floor the accelerator and groove' tune?

My nomination: Hey Dude by Kula Shaker. Just love the way the song accelerates away from the lights..... (a bit like Paul Westerberg's brilliant live version of Another Girl Another Planet).

You guys have summer over there?

I'm gonna have to think about my summer song nomination. I'm not quite in that summer mode yet.

Wow I have a whole list of songs for the summer.

I can see it now....<fade into daydream sequence>

When I get my list compiled, i'll post it. Good topic to start, Jacko!:D

Songs that make me think of summer tend to be songs I listened to in the summer often. The number one "summer" song that comes to mind is "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden.

Well here is a minature list of what songs I listen to in the summer. When I have some time I will add many more to this.

50 Cent ? 21 Questions
Deftones ? RX Queen
Dirty Vegas ? 7am
Fantastic Plastic Machine ? Take Me to the Disco
Finch ? Untitled
Glassjaw ? Radio Cambodia
Jay Z ? Big Pimpin?
Justin Timberlake ? Rock Your Body (I know what you are thinking, but this song is good);)
Linkin Park - Almost any song (this might induce road rage)
The Offspring ? Bad Habit (This also might induce road rage)
Refused ? New Noise
Snoop Dogg ? Stoplight
Xecutioners w/Mike Shinoda and Mr. Han ? It?s Going Down

Some songs are not for the faint of heart. And alot of you might not like these, but that's why we need everyone to list.

I don't have a Summer song picked out yet for this year, but I can tell you that last year's official Summer song for me was "Words" by the Doves.

A contender right now could be The Sea and Cake's "Shoulder Length" from their latest album, One Bedroom.

very summery, very... "yeaaaaahhhhhhhh".

Actually, that playlist may induce headaches in my case. ;)

All very interesting, and some great music, but mostly not answering the question.

I didn't ask "what's your favourite music", nor even "what's your favourite music to listen to in summer", but asked:

What's the best 'balls-out, top-down, floor the accelerator and groove' tune, and explained that I meant a song that 'accelerates away from the lights'?

I gave two examples of what I meant - Hey Dude by Kula Shaker and Paul Westerberg's brilliant live version of Another Girl Another Planet. I could have added Deep Purple's Fireball or Highway Star, Rocks by Primal Scream (though it's a bit slow) or better still Jailbird, Rock and Roll by Led Zep, Thick'n'thin by the Black Crowes, Decadance Dance by Extreme, You Could be Mine by Guns and Roses, Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols, Katrina and the Waves Walking on Sunshine, at a pinch, or even Nena's 99 Red Balloons. Or Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC, Fortunate Son by U2, Joy by Gaydad, Respectable by the Stones perhaps?

But mellow stuff like Coldplay (while it may be great summer listening, like almost any record by Squeeze) wasn't what I was asking about.....

So:

1) It has to be fast but not too heavy.

2) It should increase in speed, taking you with it.

3) It has to be exhilerating and uplifting

4) It has to be accessible and melodic

ANY CONTENDERS?

Well if that is what you want, here it is. It is on my original list:
Take Me To the Disco by Fantastic Plastic Machine

I heard "Oye Como Va" by Santana wafting on the summer breeze when i was walking on the beach today. It has to rank up there as one of my top favorite summer songs. Later that day we were on a deck overlooking the ocean and "Life's What You make It" by Talk Talk came on. It seemed perfect as the sun set and the conversation warmed. Other faves" "Roundabout"- Yes; "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" -Robbie Robertson. Hey I just spent some time at the Music Store in iTunes4. What a great way
to preview music. I can't see why the RIAA wouldn't see this as a way to increase sales of both music in CD and downloadable tunes. There's a 200,000 tunes there now and that's just the start.

OH HOLY SWEET BEJESUS. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVED THIS SONG. (and only related it to racing...)

i first heard it in wipeout XL and since then it has gone on ever "for the car" cd i ever burned, on my ipod, etc.

it's ripped on my xbox under "racing tunes" and i listen to it all the time while playing need for speed or something.

heck, i even made a soundtrack for gran turismo and of course, this tune ended up on it. i used a mixing board to combine the sound effects and the cd that i played.

yes, space6donkey nailed this topic, hands down. the only other song i could offer up is "thunder (dom & roland remix)" by dom & roland. combine these two, and i am going to get speeding tickets.

btw, randydecker mentioned it first, but jackonicko, your new avatar is so cute and funny. what the heck is the little guy? a puppet or something?

I have to hear this song Pearl's Girl (Tin There Edit) by Underworld . My favorite "get on the gas at the stop light song" is Five-O-Ford by the Reverend Horton Heat. Though it's really hard to get too gassed up in a Subaru Outback...

The avatar is a puppet, named Basil Brush - a children's TV favourite over here during the 1960s and 1970s, impossibly upper class, quintessentially English and a bit of a bounder. Many suspected that he was part-based on famous British 'rotter' actor Terry Thomas. He's now back on TV, winning a new generation of fans.

He's a PUPPET?:(

Back to your question -
"Wedding Nails" by Porcupine Tree
"24 Hours" by Amor
"Eternal Life" by Jeff Buckley
"High Expectations" by The Hoax

I'll have to check out "thunder". Yep, I really long for some of the weapons from wipeout now that the tourists have returned to the moutains...a shockwave would be really nice.

Oh yes. Tin There from Wipeout 2097 (as it was called in Europe).

Actually, the version that was originally mentioned was Pearls' Girl (Tin There) which came off Underworld's Pearls' Girl EP, which was different (but not as good) as the edit of WO 2097. Underworld have done some amazing stuff like this, if you like Tin There, try Cherry Pie, Dark and Long (Dark Train Mix), Kittens.

Two ultimate ones I've got to mention though. The perfect summer tune has to be The Sun Rising by the Beloved. Haunting, beautiful, essential.

But using the criteria Jacko used, the one I'd have to nominate is Underworld (yes, them again :D )'s track Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love. Sixteen and a half minutes of music, changing so many times it's unreal, starting slower, getting progressively heavier and faster, then the total chillout bit at the end. Fabulous. And the live version off Everything, Everything has to be heard, it's frankly exceptional.

I'll end the Underworld love-in now, go back and talk about other bands. :D
