Would it be possible to put a tiny dollop of glue on the touchscreen, at the center of each "key", to give the user some amount of tactile feedback to help them text message?

That would most likely interfere with the touch sensor. If you try it, I'd recommend putting on a screen protector first so you don't damage the screen.

That would only work for the main screen and certain other screens though. It seems like it would actually be bothersome when using other menus/apps with different orientations.

I think having slight-vibrations when pressing certain keys would be a good start though. Not owning an iPhone yet though, I'm just throwing my thoughts out.

The Nintendo Wii has a vibrate feature in its remote that shakes when you move the cursor over a button. It's genius. Apple could easily add a vibrate function via a software update for each key press but it would drain the battery quickly so I doubt they will ever add it in. Just one of many, many missing features I guess.
