I have a pretty good dial-up connection that very rarely cuts off on me...except when I'm downloading something from Audible. I've tried turning off my power saver features and even the screen saver, but a six hour book will usually get "timed out" less than halfway through when downloading the best quality. It takes me two or three tries of staying connected for 2 days straight to download a book (or part of one) I connect through Bell South and "disconnect when idle" is not selected in my internet preferences. My browser is Safari and I use an Emac. Does anyone else have this annoying time out problem?

My connection automatically times out after 2 hours.

When downloading from Audible, if the connection is dropped I pause the download and then close audible. Next I reopen audible and hit resume. It then picks up where it left off.

Hope this helps.

Like Mindracing my connection drops after 2 hours. With Audible Manager 3.5 Audible downloads resumed mostly okay. At about the same time that I "upgraded" to AM3.6/4.0, downloads would sometimes resume but mostly not. Recently I have had to accept Format 3 - which I can almost always download within 2 hours (ISDN connection).
I was hoping that the new iTMS addin would have solved the problem but it has actually made my problem worse in that downloads do not resume at all.
I would have thought that this was a common problem. Does anyone PLEASE have a workaround?

Has anyone tried the new Audible Download Manager plug-in for iTunes 4.5? I don't have this issue as don't have dialup, but I wonder if this will make any difference. When you use the new Audible Download Manager plug-in, the old Audible Manager isn't even launched and your book is downloaded directly into iTunes. The download can be found at Audible.com's "My Audible."

Sorry Arsolot, the new iTMS addin that I referred to is the plug-in for iTunes 4.5. Thanks anyway.

Not sure if this would help - but I imagine your connection times out because there is no activity on the line, specifically, no upwards signals. Would having another application open, such as Outlook, checking for mail every ten minutes or so, keep the connection going? Only a thought - I'm on a Wintel system myself.

David - thanks for that but the disconnect is forced by my ISP regardless of any activity.
