My new 3G iphone is doing the same thing, as well as the older iphone that my daughter now has. My guess it is one of two things:
- either the new iphone 2.0 software update whacked stuff or
- the network your service is on (ours is AT&T) is so bogged down that it's just not able to handle the sudden influx of all the new users and activations.

Either way im sure both Apple and AT&T know about it, and the appropriate people are being chained to their desk until it is resolved.

Phone your service provider. Mine wasn't turned on by default. O2 told me how to turn it on.

my voicemail wasn't working when I first activated the 3g either. I did the following to fix the problem:

1. call my own phone number from my cell - this brings you to a voicemail setup system. Go through the prompts until it hangs up on you.

2. try accessing visual voicemail, it will prompt you for the password you set up in step 1. Enter that password and VV should work.
