For a friend in Europe, I'd like to know: can the iPhone start up and do things before it's activated on AT&T ? What happens when you power it up for the first time? Does it go to the main menu and allow you to do use the browser, wifi, video etc.? Any help appreciated.

no, it wont even display the menu, as soon as you unlock the screen, it shows a msg "activate iPhone"

That's really bad. I guess we need a simlock remover. Thanks for the help.
Since Apple has made the iPhone to be exclusive to a single network, I doubt it is possible to remove the SIM-lock. Unlike other phones, which are designed to be used on any network, and are then just locked by the provider for their network. Also, there have been reports that the iPhone needs some special Apple hardware in the network, so even if you did manage to get it to recognise a different SIM, the chances of it actually working to make calls, etc, are slim.
