I think that Apple should also considering making a deal with T-Mobile since they allow the wireless bluetooth via phone and computer. I would be more eager to sign up with T-Mobile than AT&T.

Well, we can debate what should have happened, but the reality is that they're now in a multi-year exclusive deal with AT&T that apparently lasts through at least 2009.
This precludes them from signing deals witha ny other carriers prior to that poin.
The short answer is that if you want an iPhone in the U.S., you're pretty much stuck with AT&T for at least the next couple of years.

I realize there are no details regarding this contract, but what are the chances Apple would be free to put a different model on other networks?

Yesterday you said they should have signed with Verizon.
You don't like AT&T, we get it. I don't either, but I've moved on.

I guess it's possible, but without knowing Apple's terms with AT&T it's hard to tell. However, it doesn't seem like something that Apple would do. They generally like to keep their product like pretty streamlined - therefore, having different models for different networks just seems un-Apple-like.

Verizon or T-Mobile would be better carriers for the iPhone because AT&T sucks.

Most people hate ATT/Cingular. Would it have been cooler if Apple chose T-Mobile or Verizon? I guess but the thing about the ATT deal is that ATT is in the midst of reinventing itself. They gave Apple the freedom to change the way they do business in some fundamental ways. Therefore, it's a little disingenuous to hold ATT/Cingular to the previous (admittedly low) standards. I think that we have to trust Apple a little and see how ATT works out with the iPhone first. It seems to me that the iPhone plans are much more reasonable than what they offer for other smart phones and Blackberries. Who knows. Maybe their network will get more reliable soon too. I know that they're deploying a TON of towers around Portland Oregon so...

meh. A lot of people hate Sprint. A lot of people hat T-mobile. People hate Verizon. People as a general rule dislike their cell providers. This is the first time I have truly enjoyed the experience of purchasing and activating my phone. The iPhone is a joy to use, and that reflects well on AT&T.
