It depends on the docking accessory. Some won't fit the shape of the iPhone.
my stere use a docking cable not a docking station, so if the iphone has the same connector, would it function the same as the ipod
here's my ipod system

The iPhone dock connector likely has power and audio output so you're good to go.

It doesn't work with the newest Kenwood iPod connector. Hopefully it will with the next firmware update...

It should work, the dock that comes with the iphone has an audio out plug on it and is the same style plug as ipods so I figure they'll place nice.
My Alpine KCA-420i iPod Interface Adapter will charge my iPhone, but music won't play thru the car stereo - only thru the iPhone speakers.

I believe the line out is different on the iPhone so it would require a different cable. I tried plugging my iPhone into my car and even though it's the same connector on the bottom, I didn't get any sound out of it. My guess is that it requires a different iPhone specific line out cable.

My JVC head unit has a cable with a dock connector. It doesn't work with the iPhone. It will charge my iPhone but it won't control the music. :(

I have an alpine iva w-200, using the kce-422i cable pluged into the iphone i have full control, charging, and audio from my iphone. The iphone displays a message saying it's not an authorized add on or something but my head unti still function normally. At leaset i don't have to buy a car charger now!

My iPod car charger doesn't charge my iPhone (it plugs in but doesn't do anything) so I went and bought an iPhone one today.

The deal with the audio out is the device has to say iPhone comptabile. If not the iphone detects this and either puts the audio out, or asks you to put in airplane mode. This is to prevent interference. So we will just have to wait for iphone car dock connector. On a related note, has anyone seen pictures of inside of the iphone dock? I would like to see what it has inside.
Thanks,

I installed the alpine x001 ipod head unit about a month ago, and usually use my ipod mini hidden under my console. After loading up my iphone with tunes, i decided to see if it would work as well, and sure enough it does! The phone even goes so far that if it rings, it pauses my stereo and rings through the speakers in the car until i pick it up! When i disconnect, it starts playing again.
If you are looking for a bluetooth solution and iphone hookup, this is the best head unit i've seen. the bluetooth hardwire phone kit is somewhere around $200, but if you use an iphone with a bluetooth headset, u can avoid the whole thing! sound quality is amazing and the connection is seamless, you can use your phone while its playing on your stereo just like if you had headphones on.
Other than a few changes Alpine should make to the head unit, like changing the order of some buttons and a couple of preset options, this first gen head unit is wonderful. I will gladly sacrifice a front CD loader for a USB/iPod/iPhone/CD Changer/Satellite tuner. You can get this head unit online a little cheaper than the retail stores if you search a little. its around $400, totally worth every penny, if only for the sound quality alone.

I hooked up my iPhone to my Kenwood DDX-7017 Double Din Touchscreen and it works!!! I get the message "This device was not designed to work with iPhone" or something like that. It asks you if you would like to turn on airplane mode to reduce interference. I just click cancel/no and it works just fine just like a regular iPod, playlist and all.
Today after work, as I was pulling up to my house I received a call. The music faded, and the ringtone actually played through the headunit and to the car speakers. Now I have to find my bluetooth headset and test it while its hooked up to the car and playing music . As an added bonus , I dont have to buy a car charger for the iPhone, woohoo!

Basically there are 2 sets of ipod chargers the ones that feed over the old Firewire port and ones that feed into the USB port. The former will not work on the iphone.

I think you're confused, no body is talking about USB/Firewire Chargers. :shake:
We are talking about Stereo interfaces like the Kenwood KCA-iP500 http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/products/2005/113/l113iP500-o_.jpeg
Mine works just fine.

I use the Pioneer CDB-i100 and it works fine. It does give the warning of Airplane Mode but serves audio fine. It is a little flaky on the charging side but it does seem to work fine. I look foward to an iphone specific one that may be able to kill GSM interference. Here's hoping!

I have an iPod2Car (PXDP) adapter made by Peripheral Electronics in my Scion xA and it works with the iPhone. It does automatically switch into "Airplane Mode" which turns off the cellular portion of the iPhone, which isn't ideal. But the dock connector does function with the iPhone.
Eventually I expect an updated adapter will allow the phone to remain functional.

I stumbled across a possible solution to the iphone not working with some car stereo's. Now granted, I have a cheap name brand stereo ,but it has the full ipod interface built-in. It's a Valor NVG-710W ($999 from frys).
My iphone worked in my truck from day one, but after a week, i made some playlist changes, and it quit working. After making sure it wasn't the radio itself (tested my wife's iphone, and it worked). I started playing with the playlists.
What I found was this: my stereo doesnt comprehend "Smart Playlists". Everytime I sync'd a Smart Playlist to the iphone, it would not connect to my car stereo, but if I took the Smart playlist's off, it would connect immediately and start playing.
Hope this tidbit helps someone out.

After seeing the bmw ipod kit work perfectly with my and my friend's iphones, and after reading this post I bought one today.
I had been saving a $50 gift card to BestBuy, and so I picked up the Pioneer adpater or my DEH480 head unit. It works perfect, charging and all.
I love it.

The Alpine 9857 headunit with the iPod adapter works, with access to playlist and it also charges the phone.

I've had the USA Spec box for Toyota for a while and it worked great with my 5th Gen iPod Video.
Plugged my iPhone in and it worked straight away. I did have to dismiss that stupid "this may cause radio interference" message or whatever. I've taken plenty of calls while plugged in. The music fades, the phone rings, and I pick it up with my bluetooth headset. It's choice! Never got any radio interference either. My radio must be shielded pretty well.

technopriest,
Can you control iPhone directly while it is connected to CDB-i100?
I heard iPod cannot be controlled while it is connected to CDB-i100, control should be done via headunit.
Thanks.

I have a 2007 BMW M5. It worked flawlessly with the iPod adapter and I can control it through BMW's iDrive just fine.
It does the same thing about airplane mode, and I just turn it down. It works just as well as my iPod video did/does.

Just got my iPhone the other last week and also ended up getting the new Alpine IDA-X100...
Works great, charges the phone, when it rings the song pauses & my bluetooth speakerphone picks it up. When done with the call, the song starts back up where it left off.
Only downside is that sometimes the phones cell signal can cause interference that you hear in the cars speakers, But if I turn off the internal amp on the headunit and just rely on my external amps, theres no problem.
I also found out a few months ago while on a road trip that the iPhone works great with our iPod adapter from Peripheral for our Honda Accord with Navi. Does the same thing, if we get a call it just pauses the song then replays it when done with the call.
We have the added benefit of watching movies or youtube in the car while listening to the car stereos... but I would never do that unless sitting in traffic.

the iPhone should has came with a dock. I just recently visited my local Car Toys place and the iPhone worked with most, if not all, car cd decks/player. The deck was able to control the iPhone and etc with no problems. In sure that the dock will work with it too if you chose to put the dock and connect it to your car stereo.
This message is sent from my iPhone.
