I cannot decide what route to go in terms of improving my in car experience with my ipod. Right now I have the Griffen FM transmitter for my 30g video ipod. It doesn't charge the battery so on long road trips the Ipod will not have enough battery life for the voyage. I am debating between a few options whether to get an fm transmitter that plugs into in the cig lighter, buy the alpine KCA-620M head unit adapter for my alpine deck, or to buy a new alpine head unit and buy the cable that makes your deck compatible with your ipod. I really do not want to buy another head unit. Finding a dead station and sound quality makes dislike fm transmitters, so as of right now I'm leaning towards getting the alpine adapter. Thoughts? Appreciate it! :p

Buy a new head unit with a 1/8" jack, or a set of RCA inputs on the rear. Pick up a refurbished Belkin Auto Kit on eBay, and a cable. Buying a new head unit may be a hassle, but trust me, you won't get better sound until the iPod has an optical audio output.

Hi. I know from your post that your not crazy about FM Transmitters. I think you used the wrong one though. The Griffin transmitter is a piece of crap in my opinion. Have you looked at the Kensington? I have their Digital FM Transmitter & charger and the sound quality is fantastic! Sure you still have to find a quiet frequency, but with 3 pre-sets I'm able to switch between 101.1, 103.3 & 93.7 mhz on the dial and find a quiet frequency. And the best part of it all....the Kensington comes with a 5 year warranty! I've already taken advantage of their warranty and they sent me another one with no problem. They really stand behind their product. Before you go through all the other hassles you stated, give the transmitters one more shot. Take a look on Ebay for the Kensington. About 30 bucks cheaper there.

That's like saying, I am not happy with my car's performance, right now I drive a Yugo. Dump that FM &$^%# and do the RCA thing as suggested.

Wrong. You should get better performance with any of the newly released direct-USB connect heads.

umm....the iPod doesn't have an optical output.
anyway, upgrade your headunit to one of the new ones with either a "Full Speed" connection or USB connection. The best sounding one for iPod is the Alpine iDA-X001.

I realize that, hence the word "until". It sucks that my old iRiver had both an optical input and an output, but my precious iPod has none. :o

I have DVA-9861 and I love it. I had the installer drill a hole into the glove compartment and I can remove the faceplate so no one knows I have an iPod, and I never have to charge it at home.
