I know there have been several posts on this topic, but i just wanted to share my experience with everyone. Last night I called to see if my local CompUSA would offer the TAP on my new Gen3 IPOD that I bought from Apple.com. The woman over the phone told me that It was not a problem, to just bring in my receipt and they would take care of it.

I proceded to walk into the store and as I was walking up to the counter there was a gentleman with the most abused 10GB IPOD I had ever seen. I mean electrical tape on the headphones, clip on case was broken off and secured by some other type of tape. The ipod and headphones were no longer white, they were some shade of yellow. It was in really bad shape. So I listened. I figured here is my chance to really see the TAP in action.

The gentleman told the store manager that the ipod was no longer working properly and that he wanted a replacement. After a few seconds of showing that it did not work, the manager proceded to tell him that the only thing they could do is replace his what looked like a 2nd gen 10GB with a new 3rd Gen 10GB.
The gentleman proceded to tell the manager that this was not in fact a fair trade because the new 10gb does not have the belt clip and remote. At first the manager told him that this was all they could do, but then after a few minutes of arguing the manager caved in and the guy walked away with a Brand new 15GB 3rd Gen. An UPGRADE! at now cost.

After seeing this, I felt good about moving forward and spending the money to buy the TAP for my IPOD.

Just wanted to share my experience. :)

This is great news!

I just bought a Refurb 10gig IPOD from www.apple.com and wasn't sure if I could get anyone to cover it.

Are there any other stores that cover IPODs that were not bought from them?

Thanks!

BTW: what does the TAP cost?

for an answer to the "what?s tap?" question, do a search of the forum database and/or check the faqs (http://ipodlounge.com/faqs.php).

I would also like to know if CompUSA will offer TAP for the refurbished units apple is selling. Has anyone tried it?

And I believe the 2 year TAP costs 39.99

It really depends on the person that you speak to at CompUSA I think. As long as you have your receipt, you should be able to convince them to do it. Give it a shot. The 1yr plan is like $30, but the 2yr is $59.99.

Good Luck.

I have been wondering if I should purchase a TAP...My ipod was purchased at the Apple store. Apple covers the ipod for 1 year. If I buy the TAP does it start right away or after that 1 year? If so could I wait a year and then buy the TAP? Any advice would be appreciated!

My guess is the TAP would start the day you bought your TAP, regardless of what the Apple warranty is.

I recently got a new 15gb ipod as a TAP replacement for my original 5gb. The interesting thing is when I went back in today to get the TAP again, they sold me the same TAP as last time for $29.99. The SKU that they keyed in doesn't even exist anymore as a legitimate TAP code [according to their product brochures] but still rings up as a 2 year replacement carry-in plan.

I see that they now have a peripheral replacement plan which would be $59.99 for 2 years on this Ipod.

So... I guess I'll still be able to use it at the end. They didn't even check the type of TAP the first time, they just made sure I bought it.
