Hi all, I already use an Ipod shuffle (old model) and now I've got the chance to go with a nano 4GB or a video 80GB. They're both new but I just don't know wich model to pick between the 2. Thanks for your input, from someone who don't know where to go.

I think it depends on your lifestyle. My wife loves her nano becuase she brings it to the gym rocks out and it's so light she doesn't even notice it. I need a video ipod mostly for the storage. I keep photos, music, and whatever files I might need for work on it. So what are you going to be doing with yours?? Strictly rocking out? or do you see yourself performing other functions with the device?

I'm walking a lot but don't really workout. It will be mostly for listening to music when I walk in the car and on my home system(docking station from panasonic), photos of my kids and the video thing could be fun. I'm just a little affraid of the hard disk in the video Ipod. Is it tough ?

I haven't had any problems with mine and it's been dropped a few times by accident. Sounds like a video to me :)

Hi and welcome to iLounge.

The hard disk in the full-size iPod is more than durable enough for reasonable casual use as long as you're not tossing it around. The normal care that you would give to any expensive device should be fine. The iPod also has sufficient buffer memory that the hard drive does not spin continuously... For example, if you're listening to 128kbps music on an 80GB iPod in a continuous playlist, the hard drive will only spin up about once every 45 minutes to reload the buffer.

However, depending on how and where you plan to use the iPod, the 5G is also much more likely to need a case, since it scratches much more easily than the Nano.

It should also be pointed out that the Nano has superior battery life (24 hours) to the 5G iPod (15-18 hours of audio-only playback, depending on a number of factors).

You also have to consider the size of your library, and the expected growth of it, as well as how much music you plan to want to keep with you. For short excursions, 4GB/8GB is probably more than ample, unless your musical tastes vary greatly. However, if your library is large and you want to carry around all or most of it with you at all times, then the larger-capacity device would be a better option.

Photos also do not look particularly great on the Nano screen, due to the small size. If you plan to be viewing a lot of photos, the full-size iPod has a much nicer screen for that purpose. Further, the Nano does not provide any TV output capabilities to show photo slideshows on a TV screen, whereas the full-size iPod does.

I would have to agree with Jesse on this, it really depends on your lifestyle and what you want to use it for. I recently got the 80gig Video Ipod for myself. I started with the 30gb version but found that it wasn't going to hold as much of my collection as I wanted it too. Plus once I started buying and putting videos from the Itunes Store on it, I found out how much more space I was going to need. I really don't think you will have trouble with the full sized Ipod even using it to walk with. It is a bit bigger and bit heavier though so that might factor in too of course. But the decision is really up to you. Either one I think you will really enjoy.

Thanks for your input, I just ordered an Ipod 80 GB black. I should have it by the end of next week.

Talk to you soon
