Hi and welcome to iLounge.

Unfortunately, if it's a 3G iPod (which it sounds like it is from your description), you won't be able to charge it over USB. The 3G iPods did not support charging over USB, only FireWire.

There is a dual-lead cable you can purchase from Apple's web site (see Apple iPod Dock connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=1D0936E6&nplm=M9688G/A)) that will allow you to connect to a FireWire charger and a USB port at the same time so that you can charge and sync your iPod. You'll either need to pick up this cable (or something similar), or get a powered FireWire card for your computer.
