Sad iPod icon: Logic Board or HDD?

Planning on DIY fix for sad iPod icon on 4th gen 60Gb iPod photo (2.5 yrs old & out of warrenty). Question is - is it more likely the HDD or the Logic Board....or even the HDD cable? Does anyone have any semi-informed guesses on the most likely source of the problem?

I do have a 4th gen 20Gb monochrome that works except for a broken screen. If this has the same HDD cable, I could swap this first to isolate the cable.

Any suggestions as to the most likely cause prior to ordering hardware?

I have the same question, basically, but I have a 40GB 4G with sad face, so should i buy a new HD or new logic board?

It works occasionally, if i spank it, then plug it into firewire to charge it, i can usually resurrect it for a day or so. any suggestions?
