syncs... disconnects... syncs... disconnects.....

My wife just bought her mom a pink shuffle for mothers day and I am having problems with syncing.

Setup:
Windows 2k
Newest iTunes (7.1.something)
Newest Shuffle Software (1.2 I think)

Anyway, when I plug it in, it launches iTunes, syncs, then disconnects, then syncs again, disconnects, and loops like that forever.

I have my own silver shuffle that I use on a mac and it is charging just fine using the supplied USB cable with mine, so I know there isn't a problem with the cable. I have switched out the USB slot I have used and have also used it on a separate USB slot on the PC on a PCI card and it does the same thing.

I am at a loss as to what to do now....

any suggestions?

Try doing a restore..
open iTunes
highlight the shuffle iPod
click restore in the summary screen in the right pane

Tried that and it didn't work.

Also tried reinstalling iTunes, windows updates, 2 different shuffle cables, virus scans....

still nothing.

Did you try doing a System Restore on your Computer itself, not the iPod? I would try that. Restore to one day before you installed iTunes. From the START gor to HELF & SUPPORT, where it says pick a task you'll see the option to do a Sysyem Restore. It's completely reversable and you don't loose any save data.
