Hi. I have followed the steps to get my ipod into disk mode, because I am getting an ipod picture with a frown. Only rarely does it actually go into disk mode. I have toyed with it being plugged into my computer, into the wall, and not plugged in at all, but i cant get my ipod to get back into disk mode. What would be the easiest way to do this?

Thanks alot

Jordan

Disk mode: first, perform a "soft reset" - press and hold the Center and Menu buttons for about 6-10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears on screen. As soon as you see the Apple logo, release the buttons and then press the Center and Play/Pause buttons to enter disk mode. If it's in disk mode, the screen will be black-and-white, the backlight will be off, and it will show a checkmark and the words "OK to disconnect."

What model of iPod is it? There is a way to manually force it into disk mode, but it varies from model to model.

I'd suggest following the steps in Putting your iPod into Disk Mode (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651) on Apple's knowledgebase and see if that helps.

Does the iPod show up at all when you plug it into your computer?

When you say you're getting an error screen on the iPod, am I to assume that this is happening consistently (ie, you can't use the iPod at all)? Normally, the steps above will force the iPod into hardware disk mode if it's capable of doing so, but if this isn't working for you, and the iPod isn't being detected by the computer, there may be a larger problem.

You indicate that you have gotten the iPod into disk mode in the past... What did you do with it at that point? Normally, if you can get it into disk mode and can get the computer to see it, you should perform a restore on the iPod, or possibly even an operating-system level format and then a restore if a basic restore doesn't work.

Also, if it's not showing up on your computer, you may want to try connecting it to a different computer and see if that works. As one possible recovery step, you can try connecting it to a computer that doesn't have iTunes installed at all -- it should just show up as an external hard drive in this case (assuming you can get it into disk mode at all anymore), and then do a format of it by drive letter (ie, right click the drive letter in Windows Explorer and choose "Format") and see if that makes any difference.

i could get it into disk mode but that was months ago. once i got it into disk mode i tried to restore it but it didnt work. then i tried manually formatting it via DOS, and my computer froze and i think it got reformatted like 50%. then when i tried to restore it again on Itunes it said that the itunes software could not be found. But now i just cant get it to go into disk mode or be recognized by the computer at all..

any sugguestions?

Well, again the only other suggest that I can think of is to try it on a different computer. However, it's entirely possible that there is a hardware problem and the iPod itself is just done for.

If you can get it into disk mode again, try to connect it to a computer that does not have iTunes on it, and just do a DOS-level format as you did before. You may even want to try a different cable just to make sure. If that fails as well, then the issue is very likely a hardware problem.
