I see the special deal Apple is running on the Windows iPod (refurb 20GB for $299). Can this model be converted to a 20GB Mac iPod with a simple reformat of the HD in HFS+ format and a restore of the Mac iPod software?

Yup...just run the updater/restore tool and it will be converted to a MiPod.
You'll need to download the Mac version as you won't have it on the CD, but it will work no problem.

Yeah, I just read he FAQ. My wife just bought me a 20 GB iPOD from E-bay from a british dealer. I can't wait to get it. MY big concern now is the power adater. I'm worried that the power adapter will be European only and I will need to buy a US power adapter from Apple.
I guess I will find everything out when the until finally arives (which I hope is soon!)

The iPod's power adapters support a wide range of voltages - so the same power adapter will work in Europe as well as the States. Check out this iPodlounge FAQ (http://www.ipodlounge.com/faqs_more.php?id=107_0_10_0_C).
The only thing that might be different is the plug itself on the power adapter from a UK dealer. So, you might need a UK --> US plug adapter. Or, the plug on the adapter is removable, so you could replace it with a U.S. plug if you can find one. But the AC adapter itself will work w/ U.S. voltages.

I expect that you'll get one of our 3pin 13amp plug adaptors, but the power adaptor is the same in all countries... You can just a standard Figure of Eight cable available in most good electronics/computer store.
