Sad Face, Computer cannot detect Ipod

I have a 20GB 4th Gen Ipod. I got the sad face and when I plug it in to the computer I get the charging icon and once in a while the ipod restarts by itself . But no matter, the computer cannot detect the ipod and I get the charging icon. What is wrong? and how do I fix this?
