5 gig iPod folder icon

I have a first generation 5 gig iPod and am running Windows XP with XPlay. Presently, my iPod will only display the Folder! icon. Restarting it doesn't help--the Apple icon shows for a few seconds, then the folder icon shows up again.

When I connect the iPod to my computer, it doesn't appear to recognize anything, so I'm kind of stuck. Any ideas?

Well, you need to get it restored. Have you tried the Updater (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download)?

I have installed the updater software (both versions 1.3 and 2.1), and both give me the message "iPod is not connected."
