Suggested techniques for Etymotic ER6i initial listening and burn in??

I just returned a set of ER6i's to Buy.com, thinking they might be horribly defective. Poor bass, tinny sound quality despite fiddling with all of the earpieces, including the foam. This was my 1st pair, so it's hard to judge I was doing everything correctly.

I'm looking for comments from owners of these headphones, who love em or hate em, so I can give this next pair a fair shot.

Any advice as to your experiences would be appreciated. As highly thought of as these earphones are, I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.
