My friend has a 1G iPod. Can I add some songs onto it, without completely blowing it away? I have Windows XP and an IEEE1394 port.

If he uses his iPod on a Mac, you can't because MiPods are formatted as HFS+ which Windows can't read.
You'd need a 3rd party program such as Macdrive or Macopener to access his iPod. Or just buy Xplay.

So it can be done or it can't? I'm confused....

a 1G 20GB? is that correct? :s
If its a 3g you wont have any problems, i run my 3g 20gb on my pc, and occasionally pinch some songs from my friends iBook no problems. I dont know if that applies to you though.

Right, here's how it goes:
A WiPod can be connected to a PC or a Mac
A MiPod can only be connected to a Mac (unless you install software to read Mac Formatted drives on the PC).

This is sorely vexing to me.
I had about 13 gigs of music ripped to my OS9 Mac.
I bought a 3g 40gig iPod.
In spite of several updates and the latest software from Apple, I could not get my Mac to recognize my iPod.
So I installed Jaguar. Which, lacking any other OSX software, I had previously been reluctant to do.
Now my iPod and my Mac talk.
However my PCs at both work and home are A: by far the better machines, being new, and B: where I do my shopping on the iTunes store.
Now I find my PCs, running XP, cannot talk to my iPod, in spite of having all the latest Win-iTunes updates.
I suspected it was an HFS+ formatting issue.
So someone correct me if I'm wrong. I think I've got a solution here.
I can reformat my iPod for windows, wipe the whole thing, THEN connect to the Mac and transfer all my music. Then I'll have an XP formatted iPod that can be read by both PC and Mac?

They should all be WiPods then... that would solve it!

err no... that would not please the fanatical Mac users who like to spurn Windows :P

Actually Ewok^ is right. The best way to be able to use an iPod interchageably between OS's is by formatting the iPod as a WiPod.
And Mac afficianados will point out that this is one of the benefits of Macs--that they can read FAT32 and HFS+ drives.
But enough of that - don't want to start a platform war (and no, I don't own a mac).
