I was just wondering what was the best concert everybody out there has been to? My personal favorite was Linkin Park/Mudvayne?Xzibit, but I live in South Dakota, so good concerts are hard to find;)

Hmmmm...that's a tough question...just about anything seen at Red Rocks is good (http://www.redrocksonline.com/) but I'd have to say my favorite was U2 in the summer of 1985 at Red Rocks. Yes, I realize most of you weren't born then, but I took my daughter in one of those little baby backpack things. Took her to see them in Denver last year, too, 17 years later.

I've got a handfull:

Prince: one at the Gorge in Washington and the other at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. He is one of the most incredible performers I've ever seen. Plus it's great to watch him switch from guitar to piano, to drums and master them all...immensely talented.

Coldplay: Benaroya Concert Hall, Seattle, 2000.

Rolling Stones - Tattoo You Tour: Kingdome, Seattle, 1980. I was in 7th grade...h e l l o v a first concert for me!

The Cult - Love Tour, Paramount Theater, Seattle, 1985 - powerful show.

Rage Against The Machine - Mercer Street Arena, Seattle. - Very minimal production but what a powerful and raw show. Jaw dropping.

Pixies - Doolittle Tour, Moore Theater, Seattle - Pixies were said to have the ability to rock your socks off or stink the joint up. The night I saw them they were dead on. Amazing show.

Those are my cr?me de la cr?me of concerts.

Tool, by far.

The band amazingly replicates the studio work with a flare of extensions and extra lyrics. Secondly, two large screens accompany each show that have random crazy video mixed live (on Dual Processor G4's, no less) for them. Also, on the latest tour, a lot of art by Alex Grey (http://www.alexgrey.com/) was displayed.

Not to mention the great opening acts, like Tomahawk, The Melvins, and Meshuggah.

Patrick.

My favorite is any Our Lady Peace concert that comes to town. But the one that sticks out for me is when they came to UB (Univ. at Buffalo) for a show in April 2001. There was limited seating (about 2,000) and it sold out. They always put on a great show.:D

My best concert was Jeff Buckley at Manchester University in '95.

This guy should have been on album number 5 by now. :(

God, I have been to so many concerts over the years, I could not even begin to answer this one. But let me try....

In recent memory, Garbage at the HOB at North Myrtle Beach last spring was very, very good (except for the jerk chick who was in front of me at the stage, but that's another story... ;)).

Also, Joan Osborne the time before last when I saw her (in 2000 maybe?) at a funky little converted movie theater in Atlanta. Again, we were standing right up front at the stage, and she played a bunch of stuff off of "Relish" and "Righteous Love". The last time we saw here (late last year), she played pretty much only stuff off of her new album of covers of R&B classics ("How Sweet It Is"). Great stuff, but I really, really like "Relish" and wanted to hear that again. But, I understand she has to play & promote her new album, so it was cool. I did get her to autograph a set list after the second show, however, so that was cool, too.

Oh yeah - Beth Orton late last year, again at that converted old movie theater, and again we were standing right up front at the stage. I also got an autographed set list after that show.

Wait, wait, one more! ;) Bif Naked at a tiny club in downtown Atlanta last fall was an incredible, rocking show. Again, we were standing right up front, and again, I got an autographed set list after the show (detecting a trend yet? ;)). Bif is really a cool chick!

Hmmm. Did I say I couldn't begin to answer this one? :D

Amnesty International concert in 1988 in the old JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The Line up: Sting, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, Joan Baez, and others

Bob Dylan/ Grateful Dead 1987, same venue. An incredible show, I think it was July :)

Paul McCartney, 1989 Pitsburg Civic Arena, and Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.

Keith Richards at the Tower Theater in Philly in 1989.

The Grateful Dead, in Charlotte, NC in 1991, spring (Maybe it was May?) Two nights in a row.

Livin in the Pihilippines (yep, they got ipods down here), concerts are kinda limited opportunities, and i just kinda grab whatever i can get. But I have been fortunate to see some GREAT bands. The best ones are... (I dont remember the years though...)

Pearl Jam, circa Vitalogy. Back when Eddie Vedder was cool. Nuff said.

Rage Against The Machine, when Evil Empire just came out. I will never forget when Zach belted out Killing in the Name, and EVERYONE was jumpin around and bangin' their heads, one with the music. I left with a bruise in my head from someone who tried to bodysurf over me and hit me with his heel, but man that concert ROCKED.

Metallica, their Black Album tour. Seek and Destroy sing-along with the audience, cannabis flowing like wine and a mini-riot involving stampeding fans and burning chairs. What more can a metalhead ask for?

MTV Alternative Nation Tour featuring Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters (circa Color and the Shape) and Beastie Boys (circa Ill Communication). Sabotage. Nuff said.

I hope Audioslave comes here. Then my life will be complete and I can return to my Maker.

dreaming:

Actually, that show was one of the (if not THE) highlights of my time in Chicago (about 5 years). The venue was this 1920's movie theater that had been totally renovated, and it was a really beautiful place. But the most amazing thing was to see these 70+ year old musicians playing for 2+ hours with (nearly) all of the energy of their younger counterparts. I was glad to see all of these incredible artists getting some of the acclaim (and, hopefully, money) that they deserve.

Howdy folks - thought I'd throw in my .02

Bruce Springsteen at Madison Square Garden (Summer of 01)
(Bruce in The Tacoma Dome last year was a great one as well)

Lucinda Williams and Patty Griffin at the Filmore in SF (99, I think)
(Lucinda Willams and Casey Chambers at the Bowery Ballroom in NY (01) was good, too)

Rolling Stones/Sheryl Crow - Foxboro Stadium (2000)

The Who/Robert Plant - Madison Square Garden - 02

All the Sar Williams shows in Seattle over the past couple years ;o)

I cannot believe you took these words right from my mouth! I grew up in Golden, so Red Rocks shows were a must see. Ozzy (first row!), Bon Jovi, Scorpions (pouring rain) and a few others. Hey that U2 show you saw: is that the one where the Sunday Bloody Sunday video was taken? I am soo jealous if so. Man Cate, thinking of those shows gave me a warm fuzzy inside. Thank you!

Best concerts ever: Metallica/Guns n Roses at Mile High Stadium and Pennywise here in San Diego.

Rolling Stones, Brixton Academy
Rolling Stones, Shepherds Bush Empire
Pretenders, Shepherds Bush Empire
B-52s, Hammersmith Apollo
The Jam, The 100 Club
Gomez, Leeds
The Clash, (every time I saw them, though I was lucky, I think)
Sheryl Crow at Wembley (supporting the Stones, who were mediocre that day)
The Undertones (can't remember which sweaty dive it was, just remember how great they were)
Stone Roses at Reading Rivermead (which was lucky, 'cos they were often irredeemably poor live)

... yea tough one ...

Probably The Who in Hyde Park, London for the Princes' Trust in 1996 (?). The sheer scale (something like over 100, 000 in the crowd), blazing sunshine, copious amounts of alcohol, supported by Eric Clapton & Alannis Morrissette (alright, can't have it all), all for 8quid ($12) and culminating in me meeting, mating and passing out with a lady in a friend's bath whilst other party goers waited for the loo with increasing desperation.

As a concert that was memorable for catching me completely off-guard (not expecting much and delivering more than enough) was LadyTron at the Bowery Ballroom, NYC, 2003. But at least some of that surprise was probably due to discovering I could still have unfathomable crushes (Helena, she's lovely) at the the oh-so-mature age of 30; it's also relatively recent so not not tainted/blurred in the mists of time.

It was quite an evening. The Doors gave two shows that night and in between myself and my best friend got backstage and met the band. It is something I will always remember. Jim was totally wasted after having consumed almost a complete bottle of Jack Daniels, plus who knows what. The rest of the band was very cool. Got to talk with Ray the most, he was very nice and he expressly asked us not to approach Jim, so we didn't.

Yes it was, thaat whole time in my life was AWEsome looking back now. The Doors was not the only group my friend and I got to meet. We had become good friends with the guy in charge of security atthe place where all these bands played. There is a amusement park right outside Salt Lake City called Lagoon and it had a roller rink there called Patio Gardens. They could only seat about 1500 people in there so it was very intimate. That is where I saw the Stones as well. Me and my friend found out where they went for dinner and when we got to the countryclub nearby, there was our security friend who let us in to meet the Stones. They actually asked my friend and I to sit at the table and have some food with them I sat next to Bill Wyman and my friend sat next to Mick. THAT was really awesome. I have the tour book from that year signed by all the original Stones, including Brian Jones. Between the summer of 1966 and 1968 I saw AND met just about every major group you can think of except the Beatles. Never got close enough to see them.

Ah! A name dropping thread. I can relate to this. Is it unashamed name dropping, or do we have to be subtle?

I'll refrain from listing the aviator rock stars - most of whom I've met (and sometimes interviewed) through work, and those who've sent their kids to my wife's school.

I too have met some of the Stones, albeit much more recently. Ron Wood (who I met at a gallery, and then later after a gig) is charming and a true gent, though how he gets through life while giving time to everyone who demands it, I do not know. Bill Wyman's a nice enough bloke, though he cuts a pretty sad figure nowadays. I met him at Waterloo station and my wife and I had a long chat with him. Rather sadly, we had to rush off, whereas he seemed glad of the attention! Keith is a superb musician, and the heart and soul of the Stones, but when I met him it was clear that he didn't really have time for the likes of me, and I can believe the stories about him. Top marks go to Bobby Keys, the sax player they often use, who shared his birthday cake with me after the same Keef solo gig, and invited me to the post show party. Top bloke!

Beatles wise, I met George a couple of times before he died, but then we were near-neighbours..... Nice bloke, but very quiet and really retiring. He lived in Henley for years, and most people never saw him.

Had a beer with Mick Jones, once, and (separately) met Joe Strummer, who seemed like an extraordinarily pleasant chap. I also used to use the same pub as Paul Cook, and saw him regularly, though it was years after his heyday, and I didn't want to embarrass the man, so I never spoke.......

That ought to do for now...... but perhaps if I'm this drunk another day I'll crap on about the Oxford musos I've met.......

A propos of nothing, my wife's headmistress sat next to Liam Gallagher on an airline flight from Scotland to London, and found him to be polite and charming and not at all like his image.

I have seen a lot of great shows, and what I look for in a great show has changed a lot over the years, but there is one show that stands out.
Rancid with AFI opening back when "And Out Come the Wolves" came out at a small club in Palo Alto, California. There was so much energy on that stage that night it was contagious.

Well, didn't get to meet any Beatles, Stones or Doors.
But, I did get to drive Steely Dan and have dinner with them
before a show once. My next-door neighbor's best friend owned a
limo service and needed help with such a large ensemble.
Was pretty cool, especially when they encouraged me to flagrantly break
traffic laws. Becker was a A**, though.

Lots of brushes with local and regional bands in the South East.
Went to the same high school as members of Let's Active and the dB's,
including Mitch Easter and Peter Holsapple of R.E.M. mythology.
Also met the Hootie guys through my friends in Dillon Fence (also
from the same high school).

Weird Al came into the restaurant I worked at in High School, as well.
(As did several celebrities - Jerry Lewis, Dennis Franz, Muggsy Bouges).

Pink Floyd - Division Bell - Philadelphia - no words can describe it.

Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie - somewhere in Ohio, I can't remember exactly - An amazing blend of genres and way too much energy in the air.

I have literally seen 100s of shows ranging from clubs to arenas. Most of which I have seen are punk or indie shows; surprisingly, the best show BY FAR was by a band I would have never considered buying a ticket for--I only went because I got a free ticket. I'm pretty sure I was the only punker in the entire place.

The best show I've ever seen was Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the LA Sports Arena, sometime around '81 or '82. Though I dig his politics, I have never been a huge fan of his music. However, the show was INCREDIBLE. The band played for FOUR hours--I have never seen another band put so much energy and passion into a performance for such an extended period of time.

The best theatrical (meaning a show that was more than simply playing the music) show I ever saw was an industrial/horror "opera" by Skinny Puppy (sometime in the early 90s I think--damn, my memory is pretty well shot)--dark as hell--great effects, costumes, and horrifying depictions of insanity, isolation, disease, suffering, and death. Pretty amazing and intense, but not for the faint of heart.

At this point, it's pretty much impossible to choose a best. Here are a few contenders:

U2, RIT hockey arena, 1983 (w/Robert Ellis Orral)
- My First Show. Could have done a lot worse :)

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, NY State Fairgrounds, Syracuse, 1989 (w/The Replacements)
- Mike Campbell was on fire. Axl F-in' Rose showed up for the encore to duet on Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Free Fallin'

Swans, McIntosh Hall, Barnard College, 1989
- Burning World was the album. Don't know who played drums at this show, but he blew me away. Just POUNDED.

Eurythmics, The New Roxy, 1989
- Contender for Best Evah. Extraordinary live act.

Psychedelic Furs, CBGB, 1990
- I'd seen them (sans puppet show) at Darien Lake Fun Country on the Midnight To Midnight tour. This time cleared the cobwebs. A warm-up for dates supporting Book Of Days. No horns, no goofiness, plenty of drone. I'm glad this is how I get to remember them.

Chris Whitley, Tramp's, The New Roxy, Wetlands, NYC 1991-1993
- Contender for Best Evah. Positively electric, from the industry showcase on. Every single friend I dragged came away a fan.

Crooked Fingers, Knitting Factory Hollywood, 2005
- Had low expectations, expected to stand around swaying gently and wondering if we could go home now. Got fully rocked for 1:45. Eric Bachmann (and fine band) still bangs.

Active bands I'm bummed I still haven't seen:
- NIN
- QOTSA
- Sleater-Kinney

Rolling Stones without a doubt. If they don't include Australia in latest world tour I am going to be very ####ed off.

Loved Madonna & Michael Jackson concerts back in the late 80's too. They were awesome live.

David Bowie was pretty good too.

skateboarderx24 yea the Rolling Stones still tour and I would definitely go if they tour there soon as you might guess they aren't getting any younger :D

I went to their last 40 licks tour and it was awesome. Mick Jagger still has incredible stage presence and man he has some energy too for his age.

I only wished I had bought tickets for the 2 concerts they gave in Brisbane. I will definitely be buying tickets for all concerts in Brisbane if they come back again .....

Eh, I've only been to three, but I've watched several DMB shows (my brother has several TOURS on his computer/iPod) and Radiohead shows, which are just a lot better. So anyway,

Radiohead-8/28/03-you have no idea. Amazing show. Thom did this super performance on "You and Whose Army?" that was hilarious, and to see my favorite band live was astounding. Beyond that, in fact. I nearly wept. They've been my favorite since I was 9.

The Shins, with The Brunettes, were awesome. Saw them 5/11/05, and I was way close and The Shins loved Salt Lake. Making jokes about the U of U where they played and the BYU "Fighting Brighams," where one member has a brother attending (My Mom and Dad are alumni, and my brother attends and I will too). Fun show, and The Shins were awesome. But Radiohead was still better.

Other amazing shows I've seen/heard: Radiohead: Glastonbury '97 and '03, hard for me to choose because seeing an entire crowd jumping in unison to There There nearly brings tears to my eyes. And Thom going "To those of you in the tents; (plucks a note on his guitar) can you hear us?" And then a quirky smile and rabid cheering. I love the '03 show. And How the West Was Won is definitely stellar.

My very first concert was unforgetable.....It was when I was in middle school...like 16 years ago. It opened with Young MC....then Vanilla Ice....then En Vogue...and the headliner was MC Hammer. Since then I have seen many shows including Wynton Marsalis....in Charleston...and the Up in Smoke Tour in ATL. (Ice-Cube...Eminem...Snoop & Dre...with a host of special guests) It is my hands down favorite show.

Of the few that I've been to, The Smashing Pumpkins 12/09/96, 07/01/98, 05/23/00 and Radiohead 09/25/03 were the best ones. I'll give the nod to the Pumpkins in Anaheim '96. Greatest rock show ever! \m/

I've seen well more than 100 bands in concert in the past 25 years. The BEST was the first time I saw Boston, in Minneapolis in 1987. For someone from my generation, it was like seeing The Beatles. There were times when you couldn't hear the music because people were screaming all the time! The best part of the show was when Tom Scholz walked up to the mic and said: "And now, the Third Stage...". They then proceeded to play the entire album in its entirety!
I have since then seen them twice more in the late 90's, and they certainly put on better performances then, but there's always something special about your "first time". :)

I can't pick just one.

Big stadium show (and #1 overall) - Pink Floyd in '94, easily. Simply incredible. Saw it twice, once in the second row, once dead center in the stadium (the better to appreciate the scope of the sound and light show). Better than the '88 tour, but only marginally. Only complaint is that they didn't do the complete Dark Side thing in North America.

Intimate show - Leonard Cohen, '92. Small venue, great music, great standup, and I got a chance to meet him briefly after the show.

Festival - Horde '96 at the Gorge in Washington (the Pacific North-West's answer to Red Rocks). Lenny Kravitz, Dave Matthews Band and Blues Traveller. The jammed late into the night.

Biggest surprise - went to the Foo Fighters/RHCP concert in 2000 for the Chilis, but Foo Fighters brought down the house, the Chilis were like a weak second act.

U2 (specificly The Joshua Tree, Elevation, and Vertigo) But Popmart and ZooTV were great as well
Radiohead at the Paramount in Seattle (circa 2001)
Depeche Mode at the Gorge (outside of Seattle) Summer 2001 & at Key Arena (1998 I think)
Coldplay in Seattle
Smashing Pumkins Key Arena, Seattle (circa 1996)
Dave Matthew's Band (some tiny private show in Canada, there were about 50 people)

I just bought tickets for Coldplay at Irvine Meadows (excellent venue)

I've seen Barenaked Ladies nine times now, and I have a hard time singling one out as a favorite... the last one I went to was pretty awesome, though -- Buffalo, Dec 11th -- as I scored front row seats right in front of Steven Page. *swoon* My husband also got singled out by Sean Cullen (who was touring with them and entertaining while the band took a short break) and was the subject of an improv song. At the end, I got one of Steve's guitar picks (from a roadie... Steve throws like a girl) and Tyler handed my husband a drumstick personally. From that perspective, it was the best show. BNL always puts on a great show, so it's hard to pick out a show by the performance.

I also have really enjoyed both Great Big Sea concerts I have attended. Another great live band!

Last night I saw one of the best shows I've ever seen. Ryan Adams (& The Cardinals) played at the BTI Center in Raleigh, NC. A homecoming show for Ryan. The band played 3 hrs straight, skipping the customary intermission they've had on the rest of the tour. Caitlin Cary joined Ryan on stage for the last 15-20 minutes and they had a Whiskeytown reunion of 5 songs.

They finished up the reunion at a small hole-in-the-wall bar (Slim's) a couple hours later.
